GUY FAWKES AND THE GUNPOWDER PLOT Aims: Skills: listening, reading, speaking, writing. Language: mainly use of the past tense. Other: to learn and be able to speak about the historical situation and circumstances that favoured the gunpowder plot of 1605. Cooperation, autonomous language use. Level: 1º NA Organisation: groups of three to four students. Preparation: A copy of the poem about the gunpowder plot (“Remember, remember the 5th of November”) for each student. Time: 40- 45 minutes (in class). Procedure: Step 1: students are divided into groups of three or four people. Each group will be responsible for explaining in front of the class one of the different phases/ stages of the gunpowder plot orchestrated by Guy Fawkes and his followers. Step 2: students are provided with the following link about the plot to prepare their speech www.parliament.uk/gunpowderplot/adults_plot.htm (This could be done at school if it had a computer room and Internet access). The different plot stages are divided among the different groups. Step 3: After preparation, each group makes its presentation in front of the class. Step 4: The poem is read aloud in class. Unclear expressions or words (such as ever be forgot or ‘twas) are clarified before reading. Remarks: As presentations require time, the students had four days between classes to prepare them and plan how they would organise their turns so that all members of the group could speak.
