THE SRC

REPRESENTATION

Based in the John McIntyre Building, right next to the main gate, the SRC is a unique body on campus. The SRC exists to support you and protect your rights as a student of the University of Glasgow. This applies to everything else that could bother you while you’re studying, so they can help with anything from health, finance and personal safety to ensuring fair deadlines for work and getting helpful feedback on essays. Membership is automatic for all students, so you don’t even need to worry about joining.

SRC Council

www.glasgowstudent.net/about/council

Council is the main representative body of University of Glasgow students. This is where policy is passed, and issues affecting students are raised to be taken up with the University. It is made up of up to 35 members, including the four sabbatical officers. Other positions include the Officers, who deal with welfare and equal opportunities issues in their particular area of interest, including LGBT students, women, and disabled students; Academic Convenors who deal Besides representing students’ views and campaigning with academic matters in their faculty; and General for their rights, the SRC is committed to making your life Representatives.

advice on more complicated matters. The training sessions for Student Reps are run by the SRC in conjunction with Student Participation in Quality Scotland (SPARQS), and attendance is reflected in the academic transcript.

If you want to contribute by becoming a member of Council, note that two General Rep positions are reserved by constitution to first year students, as well as two held for postgraduate students, who are elected in autumn each year. If you’re interested, obtaining a nomination is easy: to pick up a nomination form and find out more information, check out www.glasgowstudent.net/about/elections.

www.glasgowstudent.net/events/

Student Representatives (class/course reps) www.glasgowstudent.net/about/studentreps/

If you have any concerns with your course or departmental staff then your Student Rep should be your first port of call. Student Reps allow students to air their views to the academics running their department on issues such as course content, teaching and resources. Becoming a Student Rep for your class/course might also be a great first step if you are considering getting involved in the SRC. Besides their day-to-day job, Student Reps also operate as a part of the SRC, meaning that they can pass any recurring problems to Faculty Conveners and to the Vice President (Learning & Development) who can take further action on behalf of the students. All students are eligible to be representatives for their course; nominations will open in the first few weeks of each semester. Student Reps normally sit on a staff/student committee held once a month but can go to staff at any time to discuss issues raised with them by classmates. They’ll mainly deal with problems about the timetable of lectures or essay deadline clashes but will also be involved in any disputes about teaching quality and other departmental problems. Student Reps are supported by the SRC, who offer specific training plus

SRC Campaigns

The SRC hold several campaigns every year, designed to raise awareness on issues such as prescription charges, flat hunting and bank charges. Campaigns are also one of the best ways to get involved in what the SRC does and any help and support is always welcome. To find out what campaigns are going on and how you can take part check out the SRC’s website on the above address.
