GURNEY’S

FROM THE S PA D I R E C T O R

Nick Monte, Keeper of the Inn, revered the healing and restorative properties of the sea so much that he drank a shot of sea water every day of his adult life. Wishing to create a spa environment that harnessed the sea’s best qualities, he brought his dream to fruition on April 17,1979 with the opening of the International Sea Water Health Spa and Fitness Center at Gurney’s Inn. Then and now Gurney’s inn is the only sea water spa on the continental U.S. that features signature Thalasso Therapies and uses sea water in our indoor heated pool and Roman Baths. Nick Monte often said, “The Sea always returns to Gurney’s.” This month we invite you to join us at our magical sanctuary and enjoy all the sea has to offer. Candice Monte Spa Director

APRIL 2009

D A N F RY D A Spa Technologies International After completing studies in Thalasso Therapy, Aromatherapy, and Acupuncture, Dan Fryda began formulating marine-based products targeted to the spa market. His extensive training in European spa modalities proved that seaweeds and algae’s had specific value to maintaining healthy skin. Spa Technologies has grown in the last 13 years by integrating essential oils, botanicals, seaweeds, and algae into the Spa Technologies product line to detoxify, regenerate and re-balance the skin. Mr. Fryda has recently written a book, The Ocean Within, in which he demonstrates that seaweed provides all of the natural nutrients in a balance similar to sea water, which is compatible with the body’s own fluids or the “Ocean Within.” Dan will be speaking at Gurneys on Saturday April 25 at 5 pm. Please join us for this exciting lecture.

SEA WATER SPA

THALASSO THERAPY

The Gurney family built Gurney’s Inn in 1926. When Nick Monte visited Gurney’s in 1956 he fell in love with the magnificent panoramic ocean view and soon after he purchased the inn. In 1979, he completed the International Health and Beauty Spa. Our Spa, built in the European tradition, is the only true Thalasso Center in the continental United States. Thalasso Therapy comes from the Greek word for “sea”, and refers to a variety of treatments that use sea water and seaweed, each designed to tone, moisturize and revitalize the body and skin, and in many cases to improve circulation. A Thalasso program includes hydro massage in specially designed hydrotherapy tubs filled with filtered sea water, exercise in heated sea water pools, body treatments using seaweed products, massage, relaxation, good nutrition, and exercise outside in the sea air. Sea water has remarkable properties. Sea water contains 120 chemical compounds in the form of salts and dissolved gases. It is very rich in vitamins, minerals and trace elements in very similar proportions to the human blood plasma. It also contains microorganisms that produce antibiotic, antiviral and antibacterial substances. Sea water is heated to 82 degrees in our indoor pool, and 94 degrees in our hydrotherapy baths to optimize exchanges with the body. Heated sea water allows minerals and trace elements to pass through the barrier of the skin. The ions that penetrate into the body will selectively wander and fix themselves in the organs where they are most needed. The body recharges itself with minerals and trace elements, therefore detoxifying and rebalancing all body functions. Seaweed, the crop of the sea, has an even greater concentration of sea water minerals, and provides a virtual pharmacy of beneficial elements to be used for our body wraps. Seaweed products used in our Spa are created by Spa Technologies, using the rich seaweeds harvested off the coast of Brittany in France. The special properties of seaweed help

the elasticity of skin tissue, increase circulation, stimulate metabolism, and promote detoxification. The sea air, rich in negative ions and sea minerals plays a very special part in a Thalasso Therapy program. Beach walking at the edge of the sea promotes the inhalation of the minerals, which are then absorbed through the lungs directly into the blood stream. The high concentration of negative ions, which is so characteristic of a healthy climate, contributes to the vitalization of the body. Another important element of Thalasso Therapy is aquatic exercise. Exercise in our heated sea water pool allows for movement and flexibility not available on land. The increase in hydrostatic pressure against the body increases circulation, stimulates the kidneys and promotes digestion. The effect of Thalasso Therapy is profound. Thalasso Therapy treatments have a beneficial effect on the skin, cellular exchanges, the respiratory system and the body as a whole with a better oxygenation, increased elimination of toxins and a revitalization of the mind and body. The different orientations allow you to find a program to fit your needs focusing on wellness, relaxation and well-being, beauty, slimming and body shaping. Thalasso Therapy is effective in treating people with circulatory conditions such as hypertension & arteriosclerosis; chronic respiratory conditions such as asthma and bronchitis, fatigue, stress and forms of chronic inflammation such as arthritis. Experience the living and healing water of the only authentic Thalasso Therapy Center in the continental United States.. Let us design a Thalasso program for you. To experience the unique balance created by the healing properties of the sea, try our Marine Kur Treatment, Sea Water Hydrotherapy Massage or a Sea water Hydrotherapy Bath, which combine many of the elements of Thalasso Therapy. Receive these treatments and their home care products this month at a 20% discount.

Miso soup is a quick, easy and light soup and is a staple of Japanese cuisine. With a soothing and mild flavor, miso soup is light and “brothy”. Tofu is made from soy, which helps regulate estrogen in women. Miso soup is rich with antioxidants and protective fatty acids, and a healthy dose of Vitamin E. It also boasts protein and Vitamin B12, and a nice selection of minerals to help boost the strength of your immune system.

1/2 tsp sesame oil (optional)

P R E PA R AT I O N : Bring water to a slow simmer and add seaweed. Allow to simmer at least 5-6 minutes. The longer you simmer the seaweed, the less of a salty fishy flavor it will have.

FITNESS NEWS

THE BENEFITS OF AQUATIC EXERCISE by Candice Monte B.S M.S. - Spa Director at Gurney’s Inn Human beings intuitively know that soaking their bodies in water feels good. Many people think of a body of water, such as a swimming pool, as a healing environment, a healing center for more than just the body. The water environment offers the healing properties of compression, buoyancy, and resistance. Buoyancy decreases gravitational forces making the body feel lighter and movement easier. Resistance is adjustable at every moment during movement in water. Resistive forces can be minimal or maximal depending on the force exerted, surface area, and speed of movement.

swim laps at Gurney’s (which is much less dangerous than actually doing it!). All our members are invited to participate in this challenge. The following prizes will be awarded based on the earliest completion of this program. 1st Place: 2months added to membership 2nd Place: 1months added to membership All are encouraged to participant in our Aquatic classes. As a bonus, take 2 or more aquatic classes in one week and receive double miles. Mileage tracking sheets will be kept on the pool deck. Swimmers here is your chance to Get Back on Track!

Swimming is probably one of the most healthy, fun challenging and low impact forms of exercises you can do. It is one of the few ways of getting exercise that improves your all-round fitness because it can boost strength, stamina and suppleness all at the same time. Swimming uses all the major muscle groups, and is a demanding aerobic exercise that helps to keep your heart and lungs healthy. It causes little stress to your joints and bones, which makes it an activity that you can enjoy for your entire life. Water fitness is a fun form of exercise that uses the resistance of the water to strengthen the body and can accommodate any fitness level, beginner to advance. Variable resistance through a full range of motion makes water exercise an excellent form of resistance training. Strength and muscle endurance can be achieved concurrently with cardiovascular endurance. It’s a very efficient way to exercise. And it’s Fun! Cardio respiratory endurance, muscular strength and endurance, body composition and flexibility can all be improved. No matter whether you swim recreationally or competitively, swimming is a great stress buster and provides a wonderful and meditative form of relaxation as you propel your body through the water and watch it fold over. Because the benefits of Aquatic Exercise are so great, Gurney’s Fitness staff decided to make Aprils Incentive Program The Block Island Swim. How long would it take you to swim to Block Island, around it, and back? Sign up and swim starting April 1st through April 30th. Earn miles towards your journey from Montauk to Block Island, around it and then back as you

FITNESS NEWS

SOLUTIONS FOR YOUR SWIMMING EXCUSES Excuse #1: “Swimming is boring.” Solution: Instead of doing only laps, shake it up. Vertical water training effectively strengthens your muscles, providing 75 percent more resistance than simply swimming. You’ll maximize the drag effect of the water, whereas swimming minimizes resistance. If you’re not comfortable in the deep end, also try these alternatives: WATER AEROBICS: This type of water exercise involves total body movements to music in shallow or deep water. WATER WALKING/JOGGING: This involves step and arm moves in waist- to chest-deep water. You can do it with head and shoulders above water, or in the deep water wearing a flotation device.

OCEAN AIR BEACH WALK The movement of the ocean waters at the edge of the sea laces the air with healing minerals. The air is really sea vapor, an abundance of tiny droplets of the ocean. Walking aerobically at the edge of the sea promotes deep breathing and inhalation of these sea minerals, which are then absorbed through the lungs into the blood stream. The body uses the minerals to nourish and rebuild the cells. Negative ions are charged particles in the air created by moving water. Studies show that breathing in negative ions promotes the illumination of toxins, combats infection and inflammation, and creates a feeling of well being by increasing the rate of metabolism of serotonin.

Excuse #2: “My eyes get red and sore.” Solution: This effect is due to the chlorinated water. Purchase a pair of comfortable goggles. Your eyes and visual health will thank you for them. There are dozens of different goggle brands and styles on the market. You can even get prescription goggles! Excuse #3: “I don’t feel comfortable wearing a swimsuit.” Solution: This is a common problem for people who are both average and overweight, but don’t let worries that others are scrutinizing your body stop you from taking advantage of the wet and wild fun! Excuse #4: “I get breathless after one lap, even though I’m in shape.” Solution: New swimmers tend to sprint a lap or two, exhausting themselves and ending the exercise session prematurely -- and maybe permanently. Start out by alternately swimming and resting; swim for 30 seconds and then rest for 30 seconds. Gradually increase the amount of time you spend moving until you can comfortably swim for 20 to 30 minutes without rest. Excuse #6: “I can’t swim!” Solution: Gurneys now offers swimming lessons for a range of experience, as well as a variety of water activities that do not require a good command of swimming. Your stroke doesn’t have to be perfect, but the more technically correct it is, the better the workout you will get.

Our daily beach walk begins with a light stretch and deep breathing exercises. Guest are encouraged to walk briskly to achieve a moderate aerobic heart rate to promote increased cardiac strength, calorie burning and firming of muscles. Beach walking can be twice the effort as road walking but it puts little strain on the joints. The ocean and the sky and the beach change each day. Beach walking brings you to the healing world of nature creating balance for the body, spirit and mind.

OCEAN VIEW SALON

SALON SPECIAL Healthy youthful skin depends on vital nutrients for cellular turnover and collagen synthesis. Unfortunately, the modern American diet is poor in nutrientsespecially minerals and trace elements vital to a vibrant youthful skin. Top soil erosion, processed foods; fail to deliver a balanced diet. Nutrient-starved cells atrophy then age more rapidly. The sea is the source of life itself. Seawater is the largest body of mineral water in the world and that water is qualitatively identical to human plasma, lymph and cellular fluids. We turn to marine algae to replenish and restore those missing nutrients. Marine algae are virtual concentrates of all the ocean’s nutrients needed for collagen synthesis, cellular turnover and thickening of the dermal matrix. Spa Technologies has formulated a number of seaweed rich serums to address different skin conditions. Using a patented bio-fermentation process, their seaweeds are catalyzed to generate new cell growth and restore your skin to its primal youthful flow. We invite you to give your skin an instant radiant “boost “with our Oxygenated Facial. This 70-minute facial is being offered in the Ocean View Salon as our Facial of the Month.
