Gratitude Wall #1 Meg Barbeau

1. I am grateful for the generosity of the people in Ottawa during the tornado crisis. My family is from Ottawa, and when the tornado hit, I was very terrified that our life back home would be destroyed as so many families would be. Luckily, Orleans was missed, and my family is safe, but so many other people and families were really affected by the crisis. Immediately, shelters opened up and people started taking care of each other. As Canadians, we often take generosity for granted because we ourselves are known for kindness being first nature/our natural response, but when crises like these occur, I am grateful and proud of the community we build to help each other. 2. I am grateful for the fall season. Fall has always been my favourite season. I love the colours of the leaves, how it smells after a rainstorm, big sweaters and scarves, pumpkin carving, Halloween, warm coffee in aesthetic mugs, indie music on long drives with my sister in the countryside, and so on and so forth. I have always connected more to fall than any other season because I believe it is the artsiest of all the seasons, and for as long as I can remember, I have never complained about anything that has to do with this time of year. I am excited to experience all fall has to offer this year. 3. I am grateful for the ever-dead Vine app. Though the app was deleted in 2016 and only lasted 4 years, it has made a huge impact on millennial demographic. We find humor through the internet, and though the app is dead, all the vines had been saved and are played over and over. The vines feed our sense of humor, and it’s amazing how a 6-second video can become a cultural phenomenon through the power of the internet. Recently, my college program had a party and the theme was “Vines” so we recalled these 6-second masterpieces, dressed up as our vines and came to have a good time. 4. I am grateful for scented candles. No matter what mood you are in, there is a scented candle that caters to you. In the spring you can light flower scented candles, in the fall, pumpkin or harvest scented candles. They are very relaxing to have lit as you entertain guests, or just sit all day and do homework. There are even scented candles designed through Aromatherapy to temporarily relieve symptoms/feelings of depression and anxiety, stress, and other uneasy feelings. Scented candles work wonders. 5. I am grateful for video calling. I have friends right now who are overseas as part of an exchange program, so we use video calling to stay in touch. It is a really good invention, because we can still hang out and talk though we are miles and miles away from each other. We even planned on video calling on Thanksgiving, pumpkin carving through Skype and other traditions that we normally do together, through video calling.
