Granite Bay Golf Club Your one stop for all that’s golf Pages 14-15
On the cover: Easton Holland, front, and Lucas Landberg practice their swing at the Granite Bay Golf Club.
This month’s issue is all about golf. Where to play, how to look good on the course and if you’ve never hit a ball, we’ve even included an article on how to play the game. Residents of Granite Bay don’t have to go far to practice their swing with the Granite Bay Golf Club on East Roseville Parkway, and all its amenities including an 18-hole course, pro shop and a full spectrum of dining options. There’s also the Rolling Greens public facility on Eureka Road that’s perfect for those who want to get a quick nine holes and grab a casual meal of a burger or hot dog. Whether you’re an avid golfer or one who has recently picked up the game, this month’s issue also features a
listing of courses located outside Granite Bay, just to keep it interesting. Don’t golf or never have any intention of teeing off? No worries, our September edition also includes a story about a Granite Bay resident who really likes numbers. Lori Nielsen recently began her business, TCY online, that offers a special type of tutoring that has proven to help children learn. We also feature a story about local families who have used the services of Lilliput Adoption Services, which is located in Granite Bay. Don’t miss their heart-warming stories of how making some additions to their family has changed their lives and the lives of the children they have adopted. I hope you enjoy the September issue of the Granite Bay View.

Hitting the links? Some things to consider BY DANELLE WACKER GRANITE BAY VIEW
If you’re thinking about hitting the fairway, here are some tips on how to get started.
“Instant results are not possible in golf. Patience is crucial.”
GOLF WILL TRY YOUR PATIENCE, DON’T SET YOUR EXPECTATIONS TOO HIGH Learning different swings and aim is not an easy skill and is not something that comes naturally. It takes practice. Sometimes the grip or the position of the club can be uncomfortable and the natural instinct is to change to something more comfortable. However, by being patient, things will start to feel more natural, resulting in a better swing and golf experience. Instant results are not possible in golf. Patience is crucial.
HAVE THE RIGHT CLUBS Having clubs that are the correct height is crucial to golf. For your driver club, the loft or angle of the club face that controls trajectory and affects distance, should be 10 degrees or higher. A prospective golfer should also carry a variety of woods, irons, wedges and putters. Each of these serves an individual purpose and has a different loft degree. Despite the common misconception, woods are no longer made of wood, but of materials like zinc, aluminum and titanium. Common choices for beginners are aluminum or titanium alloys. For irons, it is suggested that they are made of zinc.

with weaker arm and wrist strength.
BE IN LINE WITH YOUR TARGET
COURTESY
A prospective golfer should always carry a variety of woods, irons, wedges and putters.
HAVE PROPER GRIP A golf grip should be with the fingers of both hands and not the palms. The most pressure should be felt in the last three fingers of your left hand. However, squeezing too hard on the club also negatively affects your swing, so be sure to have a loose but firm grip. There are several different grips such as the 10-finger grip, or baseball grip, the interlocking grip and the Vardon overlap
4
grip. It is important to change your grip every so often as grips tend to wear off over time leaving the club smooth and slick. For the 10-finger grip, the index finger of the left hand and the little finger of the right hand do not overlap but do make contact with each other. This is usually the default grip for most beginners or golfers

A good way to make sure you are in line with your target when first learning is to make a straight line with a piece of string running from the hole to your ball. Place your putter in a position so that it is almost touching the ball, but not quite. Make sure your lead foot is perpendicular to the target line you have created. Your eyes will often create optical illusions and make you think you are in line when really you are off. This exercise will help you train yourself to be on target.
HAVE GOOD POSTURE According to Granite Bay Golf Club’s PGA Jim Stewart, you should lean forward at the hips and have a slight knee bend and let your arms hang straight down when holding the club. Make sure you weight is distributed evenly on the balls of your feet and slightly flex your knees.
COURTESY

Have your arms hang straight down. This will place the butt-end of the handle about a fist away from the body allowing you to easily and freely swing your arms back and through.
FOLLOW THROUGH Just as in soccer and basketball, following through with your swing is vital for golf. It’s
important to follow through to have good distance and to get the ball up in the air. Just going out to hit balls won’t make you better. You first must have a repeatable swing (being able to hit the ball on the middle of the clubface). After your club has impact with the ball, keep your head behind the ball to ensure a full release. Your head should naturally come up with your right shoulder, and should ultimately face your target to complete the follow through. Fashion on the green? Try these on for size BY MEGAN WOOD GRANITE BAY VIEW
The white and black skirt is very versatile it’s easy to tie in bright colors like orange, pink, yellow or green and change the look.
Don’t let a dress code damper your flair for fashion on the golf course. We’ve put together outfits with Granite Bay Golf Club merchandising manager and head buyer Heather Huetter so you can strut your stylish side while working on your birdie.
The bright pink is fun and works well with a lot of different skin tones. The shirt has a very flattering cut, not too clingy and not too boxy.

While the houndstooth golf shoes are cute, sporty and different, they really pop.
Kids are drawn to bright colors and this orange shirt is fun and vivid and will look great on and off the course. Coupled with the cargo short, this is a look that many boys will like.
This is a classic look that goes from the course to the clubhouse. The seersucker adds a bit of East Coast easy style. It’s very sophisticated and never goes out of fashion.
Every little boy wants to be just like dad. Here’s a few styles for both age groups that are sure to be hits on the course.

Il Fornaio, a passport for your palette Located in the heart of Galleria’s shopping Mecca, Il Fornaio continues to enjoy a successful tenure as a renowned restaurant with a baking heritage that started it all in Lombardia, Italy in 1970’s. Today, the award-wining menu backs its prime position at the Galleria tempting shoppers with a fusion of fabulous regional Italian specialties. Shoppers certainly enjoy the convenience of this stellar restaurant but most don’t just come upon it by chance. This is a destination place. Il Fornaio is a perfect place for indulging in sumptuous pastas laced with distinctive sauces. Many pastas are made fresh on site including the favorite cannelloni filled with rotisserie chicken, spinach, mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes and smoked mozzarella with béchamel or tomato sauce; or the luscious ravioli filled with butternut squash and walnuts. Chef partner Mitch Davis is a pro with years of experience. His specialties include great cioppino, gnocchi, and specialty pastas. The superbly grilled 22 oz. porterhouse steak is a stellar dish along with the excellent veal sautéed with sliced artichokes and lemon. And it seems that you don’t have to be a restaurant chef to cook like one! Chef Davis’ cooking classes are extremely popular and could turn you
into a chef for your next home gathering. Call the restaurant to sign up! Managing partner Patrick Diegelman has been with Il Fornaio for over 18 years and has had the pleasure to oversee this location for the past three. His presence is felt all over the restaurant - from being a genial host welcoming diners to making sure that good food and good value go hand in hand. If large portions aren’t your thing, the recently introduced “Primi Piatti” are smaller portions intended for sampling or smaller appetites. And “Piatti Unici” are the new unique one-plate lunches that are easier on your wallet but guarantee to satisfy your taste buds. Try the spinach salad topped with grilled salmon or New York steak on a bed of spring mix. And since you’ve saved some room, treat yourself to a dessert such as the decadent crepes filled with apples and grappa-infused pastry, vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce. This is also a great family restaurant. Every child starts their dining experience with some pizza dough to occupy their time and the restaurant will even arrange for kids’ pizza making party! And if you haven’t heard, this is one of the best happy hour places locally where drink specials are savored with chef Davis’ complimentary appetizers

Il Fornaio sets the stage for a culinary tour each month when native chefs prepare menus spotlighting the spectacular diversity of their Italian home regions. This is a monthly culinary expedition celebrating the various food found in each area. Last month, the culinary feast was full of authentic flavors with signature dishes from Veneto paired with outstanding Italian wines. September kicks off a menu highlighting Abruzzo region. Treat your taste buds, receive a complimentary gift with each regional dinner, get your passport stamped and become eligible for a trip to Italy after six dinners! Il Fornaio can accommodate groups of 15 to 200. The restaurant divides into several inviting areas according to your group size. A special summer for Lakeside all-stars Long runs ends, but the memories linger for young ballplayers BY KURT JOHNSON GRANITE BAY VIEW
The recently concluded Lakeside Little League run to the brink of the Little League World Series turned the summer upside down for the families of 12 young ballplayers. With practices that began on June 15, and a return to town just in time to start the new school year, the team essentially spent its summer on the diamond. “I think that is great,” said Lakeside manager Bill Rockefeller. “I don’t think these kids would have enjoyed anything but that.” In looking back at the experiences, Rockefeller struggled to pin down any one moment as his highlight of the summer, as his team compiled 20 wins in
KURT JOHNSON • GRANITE BAY VIEW FILE PHOTO
Lakeside had lots of chances to celebrate this summer, including a gathering at home plate after this Dylan Keeney grand slam. 22 starts against high-level competition. “I think one of the biggest highlights was Grant (Powers) stealing home to tie up the championship game,” Rockefeller said. “He is such a talented and instinctive player.”
In terms of rating the opposition, Rockefeller is convinced that surviving the initial local tournaments was as tough as anything his team saw. “Beating Woodcreek twice (in district play) was huge for us,” Rockefeller said. “They
have been the rival for a long time and that team was right up there with San Ramon. We also were nervous early against Tri-City (in the section final) and the Dylan Keeney grand slam in that game was very memorable.” Lakeside has been to the NorCal finals twice – in 2003 and this season – and on both occasions, the kids from Granite Bay and Loomis have reached the regional event in San Bernardino. One of the major differences for this Lakeside team may well have been its ability to call on the experiences of the 2003 team in being better prepared for the Western Region tourney. “We got to San Bernardino, out of the cars and into the barracks,” Rockefeller said. “Then we walked out to the field and their eyes were as big as silver dollars.” The all-stars did not seem to get caught up in the awe of the big moment as they ran off five
straight wins, the fifth in dramatic fashion, to reach the Western Region final. The pitching of Mitch Hart, Nick Frank and Zach Hall was amazing, and Hall’s game-winning long balls in the Northern California final and again in the Western Region semifinals are among Rockefeller’s best memories. The final, against the team from Southern California, was an overwhelming experience as the Northern California champs hung with the mighty Chula Vista juggernaut in front of a capacity crowd at Al Houghton Stadium. The contest was tied 3-3 into the fifth before Park View Little League pulled away. While the run ended Aug. 16 in Southern California, the memories will live on for the Lakeside all-stars, who have made the rounds of the Sacramento-area morning TV shows, squeezing media events in between junior high classes.

Clubhouse a place to relax and share stories BY EILEEN WILSON GRANITE BAY VIEW
On any given Friday afternoon, the Granite Bay Golf Club is jumping with activity. Once the workday is over, and Indian summer, cool breezes set in, the club is home to happy members enjoying all their local club has to offer. Children perfecting putts on the practice green; families enjoying pasta specials in the Mackenzie Grill, couples raising glasses in toasts, with refreshing Chardonnay in hand, are common sights at the members-only, 18-hole golf club. While Friday seems to be a favorite day for members, any day is perfect for the casual, yet elegant, traditional, old-golf club atmosphere the staff so conscientiously provides to its 475 golf and 200 social members. As many long-time Granite Bay residents can attest, the area wasn’t always the lush swath of shimmering green that is in evidence today. Prior to the back nine holes opening 15 years ago, the front nine a

few months after that, the 180acre area was beautiful, but wild. “People tell me, all the time, that people used to ski in the little lake out here,” said Michael Lee, the club’s membership director. “Four wheeling and fishing too,” Trish Sandbach, the club’s membership relation director added. There are still plenty of wild areas on the Robert T. Jones and Kyle Phillips designed course, including a large lake that provides a habitat for Canadian geese, red-winged blackbirds, and a variety of furred and feathered friends, earning the club’s designation

as an Audubon International Signature Sanctuary. “There are fewer than 75 courses in the world that are listed as Audubon Signature courses,” Lee explained. Sandbach agrees that the course architects did a phenomenal job, changing very little on the challenging 73.6 rated, 142-slope course. Foliage-filled gulches and six bridges, crossing Linda Creek and its tributaries, allow golf and nature enthusiasts to feel surrounded by nature – sounds, smells, and sights, all soothing to the senses. “We’re not a master-planned community, like Serrano or Winchester, which makes it a really walkable course,” Lee said. “You will only see a couple holes at a time, and you’ll never hit a house.”
ASHLEY BAER • SPECIAL TO THE GRANITE BAY VIEW
Granite Bay Golf Club offers its members several venues to relax after a day of golf such as Tilly’s Pub. Sandbach said she has fallen in love with the course over the 10 plus years she’s worked at the club. “The natural terrain, all the oak trees and granite outcroppings – it’s golf as it should be, which means golf in its natural state,” she said. Of course, golf isn’t the only activity at the club. Terrace at the Tips, the recently-christened outdoor dining area is a popular place to enjoy a meal and great view at the same time. Located at
the “tips” of holes number one and 10, diners have a ring-side seat for great driving action, and a peek at the 18th green as well. And Tilly’s, an over 21 pub, offers snacks and beverages, as well as the full restaurant menu. It’s an ideal place for golfers to grab a cool beverage on a toasty afternoon. The club began with 125 founding members, and was purchased by Clubcorp in 1999 • SEE GOLF PAGE 15

Members can feast on a variety of food choices available in the main dining room of the Granite Bay Golf Club.
GOLF continued from 14 for a price of $26 million. In spite of a shaky economy, the club is still able to attract new members, and offers a Signature Golf program, which allows members to enjoy complimentary golf and dining at other clubs affiliated with Clubcorp. “I enrolled a new member today, and am meeting a prospective member this afternoon,” Lee said recently. He said he’s thrilled to have 16 new golf members and 24 new social members this year. The addition of new members helps support ongoing capital improvements. “We’re renovating the bunkers – every bunker on the entire course, plus we just built the new, outdoor terrace,” Lee said. In addition, Tilly’s Pub was recently updated, and the exercise room will be receiving a face lift as well. “When we look to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars a year on improvements, well, other clubs just aren’t seeing that,” Lee said. Unlike some golf clubs, family experiences are what Lee and Sandbach know their club offers. “Our membership is getting younger, with our average member being 45,” Lee said. We’re enrolling members who have been in the community for six or eight years. They have families now and more time to introduce their kids to the club.” The club supports the kid connection by offering events
like youngsters’ movie night, and the popular “Little Linksters” program – a fun education, which includes chipping, putting and etiquette, for children 3 to 6 years old. In addition, the club partners with Eureka Union School District for events like a golf tournament in May, and this year’s annual auction night, which will take place at the club in November. “EUSD is a big supporter of the club, and visa versa,” Lee said. But charity events aren’t the only parties going on at the club. Weekends are filled with weddings, and the banquet facilities are open to nonmembers and members alike. “People think, ‘oh my gosh’ Granite Bay Golf Club must be so expensive, I’m not even going to call them. But they’re so surprised at how affordable it is,” said Heidi Robinson, the club’s private event director. “Weddings here are so memorable. At one wedding, the groom surprised his bride with a fireworks display over the lake during the first dance. Every guest had tears – it was so romantic, so special,” she said. The club also offers one-ofa-kind events, like a White House Chef’s dinner – prepared by, and followed by discussion with the White House chef, who served under President George Bush. Of course, golf is the thing, and whether you’re an amateur or ready for the PGA, Granite Bay Golf Club has much to offer its members.

Blasting math into the summer season AMY HOLIDAY SPECIAL TO THE GRANITE BAY VIEW
Summer is a time for swimming pools, for carefree afternoons, kids camps and sleepovers. It’s not generally a season for homework, lessons and whiteboards. But there’s no reason these two seemingly opposite forces cannot be woven together, says Granite Bay resident Lori Nielsen. And the best part of it all – you can get a head start on this fall’s academics without the whiteboard. With Nielsen’s affiliate online tutoring company, she said, students can “through the convenience of wherever there’s a computer, get a great one-onone math tutoring session.” TCY Online is an India-based online tutoring company that launched overseas in 1998. In March of 2008, it expanded to the United States, developing a presence in 20 states with more than 300,000 student clients.
Nielsen is a regional director, helping to incorporate TCY into the Granite Bay, Roseville, Orangevale, Citrus Heights and Rocklin communities. She’s the “go-to person for this territory,” she said, which includes 123 K12 schools. The company has 250 employees around the world, with a core group of tutors in India available all hours of the day, everyday. The tutors are all experienced and, says Nielsen, “friendly, patient, kind and state-accredited.” Although students may never actually meet their tutor in person, TCY provides every other means to develop a rapport between mentor and protégé. This includes audio conversations, instant help, virtual whiteboards and individualized attention according to Nielsen. Students enrolled in the program go through a preliminary placement and go through four

monthly and weekly plans, or a student can simply scan a homework worksheet and get
specific help with that. Additionally, there are specific lessons for standardized testing. The Web site – www.Tcyonline.com — also has free practice exams, free printable worksheets and state-specific exams. And it is this kind of convenience, Nielsen believes, that makes TCY a unique company. It caters to every individual need of every individual student – all without any driving. “If I would have known about this, my son would have been on it,” she said of her son who graduated from Granite Bay High School in June. Nielsen, who was in the mortgage business for more than 20 years, recently became a territory manager of TCY and hopes to integrate it into the community. “My goal is that the local schools would offer this in the • SEE MATH PAGE 17

Northstar-At-Tahoe offers serenity, activity BY JEFFREY WEIDEL
NORTHSTAR-AT-TAHOE
SPECIAL TO THE GRANITE BAY VIEW
Are you looking for a high octane vacation spot where activities abound and the day can be filled from start to finish? Or are you the type of person who seeks serenity on their vacation getaway, treasuring a leisurely day of sleeping late, reading an intriguing book on a secluded deck, heading nearby for a lavish dinner, and concluding the evening with a soothing spa by a nearby fire pit? If both these opposite ends of the vacation spectrum sound appealing, consider a visit to Northstar-At-Tahoe, where you can enjoy either one. Besides being a staycation that only requires a two-hour drive or less for Granite Bay residents, a visit to Northstar comes with an abundance of activities and lodging packages that can start as low as $75 a night for a room or climb to the opulent $1,000 per night range. Northstar, which is located off Highway 267 near downtown Truckee, has put the finishing touches on its $55 million European-inspired ski village, turning this winter ski resort in to a summer destination spot as well. But the summer months proceed at a much slower pace at this North Tahoe location, where venerable Lake Tahoe’s waters are not far away, a mere seven-mile drive is all it takes. Yet part of the charm at the Northstar village is simply parking the car and never using it again until departure day. It’s the perfect setting for an active family or can serve as a romantic retreat. The village is virtually an onsite mini-mall that includes 35 unique shops and restaurants, a conference center, and the center-piece skating rink, which is used as a roller rink in summer months. A scenic lift ride and hike is something a family can enjoy for $5 apiece. For golfers, Old Greenwood is a must play, rest-

the cost dips to $100. The nearby Northstar course is more reasonable at $60 for a similar twilight rate. One never has to leave the village to enjoy a day of moun-
tain biking on the many challenging Northstar trails. Other activities include a rope challenge course, bungee area, tennis courts, gondola ride, and opportunities to go boating,
fly-fishing, kayaking or cycling. Many of the lodging options include access for onsite locations that feature a heated pool, spa and fitness area, plus a game room and various children’s activities. “Northstar is a real familyfriendly place,” said Aaron Burchfield of San Francisco, who recently enjoyed vacation time with his wife and two children. “We hike, hit the pool, and have found plenty of other things to do. I’ve come up here in the winter many times before to snowboard, but now I realize it’s also a great place in the summer.” The Burchfields were staying in a condominium within walking distance of the village, one of many lodging options at Northstar. The most affordable is $75 per person studio condo that can also come with free golf or biking packages. Luxury accommodations are • SEE NORTHSTAR PAGE 19

Winter isn’t the only time to visit the Lake Tahoe region. Mountain biking through a maze of trails and courses provide the thrill-seekers with adventure galore.
NORTHSTAR continued from 18 also available, including a stay at the Hyatt Residence Club. Costs start at $169 for a studio and go much higher for a decadent three-bedroom place on the fourth floor that includes vaulted ceilings. The amenities and service will spoil anyone staying at the Hyatt Residence Club. A typical two-bedroom has a deck with a fireplace that can be accessed from the master bedroom or the living room, which also has a fireplace. There is a full kitchen, flat-screen TV and laundry room. A continental breakfast is offered daily, and a 19-seat private movie theater with a big screen and free
movie rental are available simply by asking. Parking and Internet access is also free and if you forget your laptop, the Residence Club provides a loaner at no charge. The facility also includes a large outdoor lounge with a giant fire pit and two spas. Access to an outdoor pool and first-rate fitness center are included with the room. “The Residence Club is a fantastic facility that really spoils its guests,” said Craig Leeper of Las Vegas, who was attending his son’s wedding, where the reception was held at Northstar. “Everything and everyone is so accommodating here.” For more information, visit northstarattahoe.com or call (800) 466-6784.
