Grand St. Cafe pours a six-ounce glass of wine. Why does my wine have a screw cap?? As many of you have noticed more and more wines have adopted the screw cap or synthetic cork to replace the traditional cork in a bottle of wine. If you have ever experienced this most unpleasant odor of wet newspaper or cardboard you have encountered a ‘corked’ wine. Also known as TCA taint, it is the interaction of a natural compound found in cork trees, mold, and chlorine used to bleach corks. It is now estimated that one in every fifteen bottles is now affected by cork taint to some degree!! Screw Cap Anyone?

Grand St. Cafe pours a six-ounce glass of wine. What is a Meritage?? A Meritage is a blended wine either white or red. It refers to varietals typically used in the Bordeaux region of France. For white: Sauvignon blanc and Semillon. For Red (claret): Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot and Malbec. California has adopted the Meritage blends to add complexity to single varietal wines!

Why are the wines listed by region?? The understanding of ‘terroir’ is the definitive answer to this question. Terroir is a French word that has no English translation. Simply put, it refers to the soil composition, the climate, and anything else in or around the vines that could possibly affect the final outcome of how a wine smells, tastes, and compliments food. So, as you can see, where a wine comes from is as important as the varietal!

What makes sweet wine sooo... sweet?? Sweet wines are available in many different styles and grape varietals. The process of allowing the grapes to ripen to an extremely high sugar content is the basis for all dessert wine production. Sweet wines are the perfect accompaniment to a dessert course or by themselves as a palate cleansing end to a delicious meal!
