Grade 8 Unit 10: Recycling Period 60 – Lesson 1: Getting started + Listen & Read (P89,90) I. Getting started: “What should and shouldn’t we do to reduce the amount of garbage we produce in our life?” should shouldn’t - reuse plastic bags. - use cloth bags instead of plastic bags. - use tree leaves to wrap things such as : banana leaves, lotus leaves ... - use the garbage to make fertilizer or compost. - use vegetable matter to make animal food. - reuse used paper to make toys for children.

II. Listen and Read (P89-90) A. New words 1. (to) reduce:

B. Excersises Ex. 1: True/ False Prediction 1. Friends of the Earth is an organization to help people make friends with each other.  False: to make friends with each other -> to protect the environment and save natural resourcess. 2. Miss Blake asks the students to remember 3 things: reduce, reuse, recycle.  True 3. Reduce means buying the products which are overpackaged.  False: buying -> not buying 4. We can’t reuse things like envelopes, glass, plastic bottles, old plastic bags.  False: cannot reuse -> can reuse 5. Miss Blake says that we should use cloth bags and shouldn’t use cloth bags at all.  True 6. Recycling means not just throwing things away but trying and finding another use for them.  True

Ex. 2: Answer the questions (P90) a. Reduce means not buying products wich are overpackaged. b. We can reuse things like envelopes, glass, plastic bottles and old plastic bags. c. Recycle means not just throwing things away. Try and find another use for them. d. We can look for information on recycling things by having a contact with an organization like Friends of the Earth, going to the local library or asking your family and friends. e. We shouldn’t use plastic bags because when we throw them away, they could stay very long and could not be self destroyed.

Ex. 3: Discuss “ How to protect our environment?” - To protect our environment and save natural resources we should remember: reduce, reuse and recycle.

Reanswer the questions on page 90. Prepare “Speak – P90-91”
