17th October 2009 السلم عليكم و رحمة ا و بركاته Dear Parents, We’d like to extend a warm welcome to you all to Grade One this year! Induction week (17th – 21st October) This first week is an induction week for the children to help them get accustomed to their new environment. We won’t be holding any formal classes this week. We will be focusing on games and activities to help the children relax, make friends and settle into the school. Please help us by making sure that your son wears his name badge to school each day this week, we’ll be giving these out on the first day.
Grade One has an early finish every day this week. Please ensure that the children arrive at school promptly by 7:00 each morning. We finish each day at 10:00. Please make the necessary arrangements to have your children collected at this time. Class allocation There are three Grade One classes this year. The classes have been divided up to ensure that each class contains a mixture of abilities. There is no class that is specifically for top performers and so please don’t assume, for example, that Grade 1A is any better than Grade 1C. Schoolbags The children are being given a Manarat schoolbag today. These also contain some stationery items. If your child wants to use his bag for school you must make sure that you write his name clearly on the bag. Each classroom is full of

identical looking bags and it saves a lot of time and arguments between the children if we can quickly recognise which bag belongs to which child. Books Formal lessons will begin on Saturday 24th October. The children will not need their bags before that time. We will send the children’s school books home tomorrow, Sunday 18th October. There are a lot of books and they are too heavy for a child to carry by himself. I recommend that an adult collect your child along with his books from school tomorrow. Please bring a sturdy big bag or box with you as there are more books than can fit into a single schoolbag. We ask that you label each book. Please attach a sticker to the outer sleeve of the book with your child’s full name written on it. Please write more than just his first name, as we have many children in the class with the same first name. Please also take the time to cover the books, for example with plastic wrap. The books, especially the soft-backed ones, often do not last the whole year. Please return all the books to school by Wednesday 21st October, so that we can sort through them. We store most of the heavy books in the classroom. We will send home those books that are in regular use for homework. Information sheet Please complete and return the attached form for the class teacher’s personal records. This is so that we have quick access to emergency contact numbers and so that we can check that we have the correct spelling of your child’s name. If your child will normally be collected from school by a driver or someone other than yourselves, can you please introduce them to the teacher so that we know by face who we’re releasing the children to? I hope that we will have a very beneficial year together and that we will cooperate in helping the children realise their full potential.
