Green Party of Florida Supports Renewable Energy Policy, Endorses Independent Study on GRU Coal Plant
A RESOLUTION Whereas. the City of Gainesville's publicly owned utilities company Gainesville Regional Utilities has proposed the building of a new coal-fired power generation facility that will cost in excess of $500 million to build, and Whereas, there exists a state of emergency in the global ecosystem largely due to the effects caused by the massive emissions resulting from the burning of so-called fossil fuels, and Whereas, an independent citizens group acting in the public interest has called for the City of Gainesville to postpone appropriations for a new coal-fired power generating facility and to appoint an independent panel of experts to develop financially viable options that incorporate extensive use of conservation and renewable resources, and Whereas, the options being considered by GRU and all utilities companies should result in a long-term reduction, rather than an increase, in consumption of fossil fuels; Therefore,
The Green Party of Florida endorses the call by Citizens for Affordable Renewable Energy requesting that the Gainesville City Commission appoint an independent panel of experts to develop financially viable options that incorporate extensive use of conservation and renewable resources and result in a long-term reduction, rather than increase, in consumption of fossil fuels by Gainesville Regional Utilities.
