Common Good

When people voluntarily do something that makes the community a better place honesty, courage, trustworthiness, intelligence, ability to compromise, caring for others, ability to listen, being prepared, and common sense is what is good for the entire community. For example trying to help those who are hungry get food helps the entire community or volunteering your time to help others.

Influencing the Government

is something citizens can do in our country by voting, writing to a government official, writing a letter to the editor of a local newspaper, by posting information/opinions on blogs or using social media technology to spread a message.

A Right

is something that is protected by law and citizens are entitled to have. For example one right we have in this country is freedom of speech, which allows citizens to speak out for or against ideas.

A Responsibility

is something we should do to take care of others and ourselves. is something that directly affects us (example taking advantage of being educated) is one that affects the community as a whole (example obeying laws). is a type of government in which citizens have a great deal of power to influence their government by electing their leaders and voting on key issues that effect their communities

is the plan for our state that describes the rules and laws we need to follow. 1) It provides a framework for our state government. 2) It limits the power of the government by giving power to Ohio citizens through elections. 3) It defines the authority of the officials we elect. Legislative, Executive, Judicial Governor who enforces or carries out the laws and is elected every 4 years. Ohio General Assembly (the Senate and House of Representatives) creates the laws and they are elected every 4 years as a senator and every 2 years as a representative. Ohio Supreme Court interprets the laws (determines if laws are constitutional) and they are elected every 6 years. are important because they are where a democracy begins. Our Constitution gives citizens the right to vote.
