For Carolyn, my eternal companion

Preface This is a collection of songs I’ve written over the last 40 years, the lyrics without the music. I figured if I waited for the audio release we’d never see them in print. I’ve transcribed most of them from an old recording I made in the late 70s—I don’t know where the original manuscripts (scratch paper, actually) are today. A few I wrote without my guitar. I guess they might be considered poetry. As I reviewed the work I was tempted to omit all but about five pieces that I thought might be worthy of literary consideration. But, then, this isn’t a book of poetry. It’s a diary of sorts, I guess. Oh, it doesn’t follow a strict timeline, and it’s not much of a biography but the songs do explore a wide range of belief, emotion and experience that I’d like to share with my family. And yes, some of it may be a little silly. Just remember to laugh with me.

vii

I segregated the songs in three sections I called sets. Yes, like a concert set. I never realized my dream of performing professionally—this will have to do. These represent distinct periods in my life. Some of it’s probably obvious. I’ll let you guess about the rest. As I was writing this, I realized that although I didn’t perform in grand auditoriums before great crowds, I did play several encores on many an evening to adoring fans who call themselves my children. We sang lullabies together and I’ll have to add the few I remember to this collection. “Goodhue” is the street we lived on in Anaheim, California. We moved there in 1961 and much of what I am was shaped and formed in this place, during this time. As nearly as I can determine, “Goodhue” is a contrived word—it’s not found in the dictionary. Wikipedia notes that a “hue” refers to a pure color—one without tint or

shade and to me, the combination conjures up all that is good and pure and right. I don’t claim any transcendent knowledge or wisdom and I’m not trying to sell anything. I just thought it would be fun to share something that has been a big part of my life.

Child of Cheer Child of cheer, so far, so near oh if I could hear the sounds you hear run through meadows golden, the touch of dew flashing in the sun the taste of life on my tongue dream your dreams, beneath the tree of peace that could but never will be Child of cheer set me free ...they never will be

3

Goodhue Gazing kindly open eye, spy hidden antique stair Sparkling path, friendly sky, wonder who'd be there Forgotten dragon wings his way, cliff dwelling shadows begin to sing Fiery things behind him lay, what offering do you bring? Trembling blackness garden cave, speaks to open ear Glistening staff shows the way I feel very near Mountain throne, warmth unfold, arms of sunlight reach 'round none Let us know of things untold smiling death, all is one Sea of diamond, wind caught sail opens into good hue

4

Blinded See moments truth listen ancient wind flow ageless stream can't find, blinded, the light Whisper secret storm warn of your fall give time for a place to hide can't find, blinded, the light Grasp moments truth learn ancient wind die, ageless stream can't find, blinded, the light Die, die, ageless stream buried in the sand withdraw your hand can't find, blinded, the light

5

The Cross We Bear The children say that we’ll make our end, to the pit we’ll oblige him. Meet the coldness without fear because that’s the cross we bear. It’s late and they have left their child games, these had been lost with their friend. I think I heard that one of us had buried him but it’s too dark to search now. Let them by to the mountain path, please let them find the one. Pray that they reach the treasure, that which we thought we’d won. The children say that we’ll make our end, to the pit we’ll oblige him. Meet the coldness without fear because that’s the cross we bear.

6

Shadow of Heaven Shadow of heaven hide our deeds, cover the cindered pillars. Send our hurled flames back to us cold, demand it take place again. And we will fall back, obey every command. And then the sun cast no shadow, do you feel the emptiness. The tide had left you long before this, so you say, why its only a shadow. And we will fall back, obey every command. Give me something I can see and handle, here’s a spade, why not bury the pillars. …Give me darkness. Now you thrive, oh yes, you thrive! And we will fall back, obey every command. Shadow of heaven hide our deeds, cover the cindered pillars. Send our hurled flames back to us cold, demand it take place again. And we will fall back, we will fall back…

7

Armageddon Down to the meadows we must go, killing the evil our foe. Fighting with angels at our side, we are the ones that never die. Until the end is near, we will never fear, That what we’re doing is right, we’ve got the strength, we’ve got the might. Ship sets sail from ancient port, cast of man all alike. But soon these brothers must fight, each with an angel at his side, yeah. Until the end is near, we will never fear, That what we’re doing is right, we’ve got the strength, we’ve got the might. Then Armageddon soon reaches all and then we see the first truth. If it is know that we all must die, we’ll do it with angels on our side. Until the end is near, we will never fear, That what we’re doing is right, we’ve got the strength we’ve got the might…

8

Lady of the Dawn Lady of the dawn lives in magic forest, to rise with the sun, life playing in her eyes. A smile graces her lips, she dances in the rainbow mist, song so sweetly o'er the glen, wakens a sullen world. Love answers tumult’s cry, look toward her lightened face, see the peace in her eyes, rest in magic forest. Touch your hand in hers, sing her song of praise, her home lies with the sun, she's the lady of the dawn.

9

Rapture Always running somewhere, flee the crumbling city The wall won't yield, rooted in age nine days 'till morning The night assures no escape, his hold grows with each star's leave And I fear that dawn forever known never to return A legend of old surely lost with the earth, envisions a lonely figure A lonely figure, an army of thousands coming to us in the dying sun Lost images linger on, remembered, is there hope to scale this height But a burst of sun over the ridge, his arms bringing warmth to this cold earth And high, a rider robed in common, lifts his hand, calls our captor

10

A last breath, the walls assent, silent praise to the sky...

In The Sky Soft touch of warmth in the evening, kind voice to carry me home Your love is there to see me through, I see it coming in the sky And I know a place where we can go and live, I see it coming in the sky A morning to the years of hoping, sunrise over the land I could go on just dreaming but now I see it in the sky And I know a place where we can go and live, I see it coming in the sky When you make your home with me and take away all the tears We will sing your song together, I see it written in the sky And I know a place where we can go and live, I see it coming in the sky

11

Into Sunset Just into sunset, see the sun grow, look upon life around me, it’s so good. I see the maker, heart so loving, he made it all for us. Look at the beauty as it should be, we left our place with him, gone away. And still He calls us, heart so loving, he made it all for us. Joy fills the sunrise, hear the laughter, we are bound together now, let us sing. Praise to the Father, heart so loving, he made it all for us.

12

Shaman They leave their houses, jobs in factories and hurry ‘long the city streets Gather in the country’s favor, where a prophet, he’s called, begins to teach but the man is dead They delight themselves in things he’s taught them and color blackness with white The real world is so illusive now and alone the pain still rips their souls, they cry in their deaths Go to him now, child, and cling to his robes, his speech does so satisfy the mind Touch his eyes, they see for you now and in darkness all they tell you are lies, all your hope must die Turn away now and choose to see the light that can fill your eyes, your heart with gladness

13

They leave their houses, jobs in factories and hurry ‘long the city streets….

14

Maybe It’s been a long time since we last touched, maybe there’ll be another day soon, because now I long to be home in your arms. I know I’ve seen your eyes, cried your tears and yet I don’t seem to know you, but how I long to be home in you arms. Maybe cause it’s been so long, the times we laughed, maybe it’s all lost in a dream; I long to find home, long to be home.

15

Set Sail Set sail the sea is good today, blow wind, blow. Make rest, know the day will bring peaceful things, tidings upon the sun. Laugh, joy to all who dance upon her waters, play. And sing of happy days spent in the sun, until the day is done. Set sail, set sail on the ship today. It’s making the only trip. Set sail, set sail on the ship. You know it’s the only way. Endless days of service bringing love to a loving see. To us the gift of knowing, to each the gift of three. To meet at our journey’s end, unto the isle we come.

16

Sweet Company Oh, sweet company, I am rested when you’re near. Promise you’ll never leave me to myself, I can’t bear another tear. Oh the lost time plays refuge to those years. Please come and take me in your warmth and hide me from my fears. Oh my good friend, you spoke of a distant sun. Tell me, can we go and see it soon, I’ve nowhere else to run. Oh, sweet company, I am rested when you’re near. Promise you’ll never leave me to myself, I can’t bear another tear.

Can’t Get You Back Morning hide my doubt and worry, can’t get you back, can’t get you back. When the sun starts to rising, can’t get you back, can’t get you back. And my body’s aching, lay me down to rest. Tomorrow’s still a life away, can’t get you back, can’t get you back. And evening always melts my dreams, can’t get you back, can’t get you back. Time eats away the day, always gone to soon. I keep waking to find you gone, don’t know when I get home if you’ll be on your own. Further than you’ve been before, can’t get you back, can’t get you back. Just a glow on a distant sea, can’t get you back, can’t get you back. And the light is fading, think I’ve lost your touch.

20

Sierra Song High in the mountain where the country lies still, you only talk to the wind. Black fingers reaching up into the sky, make bed on a sleepy knoll. Sometimes I'm crying, sometimes I'm dancing sometimes I shout and no one hears. Morning skips along a sparkling stream with night fall the image fails. Flowers grow wild in patches of blue, dwarf pine gnarled and old. You haunt me and you love me and you leave me alone... Sometimes I'm crying, sometimes I'm dancing sometimes I shout and no one hears. Sometimes I feel like I'm lost in a song with only one place to go.

21

Fly The Skies I’d like to fly the skies and hold the sunlight in my hands. I want to lay me ‘cross the lands but I need you to touch my eyes. You’re everything in the world to me, you’re the one who makes me strong. You’re everything in the world to me, in your arms I belong. It’s not time to say goodbye, you’ve shared my joy and my sorrow. And when morning comes tomorrow, the tears will go from our eyes. You’re everything in the world to me, you’re the one who makes me strong. You’re everything in the world to me, in your arms I belong. I’d like to fly the skies and hold the sunlight in my hands.

22

I want to lay me ‘cross the lands but I need you to touch my eyes.

23

Shiloh Shiloh, Shiloh, your home is in the mountain, head into the wind, standing all alone, life is in the breeze on high. Shiloh, Shiloh, your place is in the meadow, running through the grasses, chasing 'way the hours, waiting for tomorrow's find. And the sun's golden peak beckons to you as you fly to the west, lost in your dream and the sky opens up, coming to view, the earth at it's birth, out of your reach. Shiloh, Shiloh, your time is with the forest, lie beneath the pine, starry sky above and you sigh to see it end.

24

Carry Me Away In my weakness I can be strong. Through the darkness you carry me along. When I’m lonely you’re always there. You touch me softly, I know that you care. You carry me away, you carry me away. The sun rise and I don’t know why, you carry me away. In the morning I can see clear. I’m on the road and I’ve got you near. You carry me away, you carry me away. The sun rise and I don’t know why, you carry me away.

25

Edge of Morning Light She waits at the end of the night, never sees morning light, a candle flickers from sight. And she sleeps but can't hide from the cold, needing someone to hold, her hunger never told. I'm that shadow on the wall, hear me whisper on the breeze. I know I've stayed away too long at the edge of morning light. One night is too little and so much, I tremble at your touch, then our good-byes are rushed. And I lie and wonder where you've gone, did we miss the morning sun, could I have been so wrong. I'm that shadow on the wall, hear me whisper on the breeze. I know I've stayed away too long at the edge of morning light. I wait at the end of the night, never see

26

morning light, a candle flickers from sight.

27

Free Falling Sea wind blowing 'cross my face, I'm going through time to a land that's fair. Time waits a moment, silence steals the torrent and I've so little left to care. Oh, I'm glory bound, going to take it to the air and I'm free falling. Star waits forever, I touch her fever, lying with her in the sand. My eyes are burning, my life keeps turning, the course already planned. Oh, I'm glory bound, and I'm weary of this land and I'm free falling. I won't be buried, I wont be hurried, let the others lead the way. I know the rain, bring it back again, season's gone, no time to stay Oh, I'm glory bound, and it's where I'm going to lay and I'm free falling.

28

Lost In Memories Tears cloud the face I see. You’ve got my lost in memories. You’re another song to me and maybe that’s why I care so. You touch me with your eyes. With your smile my spirit flies. No, I can’t hear goodbyes and maybe that’s why I care so. Your talk is sweet, it fills my mind. Our love complete, I can call you mine. Morning come soon, morning always brings you. Take my hand for a day. We’ll climb ‘till we’re far away. We’re going to wish to stay and maybe that’s why I care so.

29

Must Be Love I know that you can find a smile in a frown. I know that you can make me feel up when I’m down. And when I’m with you I know dreams never end and in a storm the trees only bend. It’s just for you the sun rises in the sky and the wind song answers in reply. The whole earth wakes just to catch the morning glow. A smile from you and they know… It must be love that makes me feel this way. It must be love that makes me want to stay beside you night and day. Your eyes are my eyes; I can see a new day. Where love’s not bound by what we do or say. I’ll take your joy then I’ll give it back to you and we’ll go on when we’re through. It must be love that makes me feel this way. It must be love that makes me want to stay

30

beside you night and day.

31

New Day The day begins and the sun causes a tiny flower to burst open. A story unfolds into a dazzling display of colors that seems to shoot out into all directions, filling the empty space, but with design and purpose. Within the flower a garden, beauty abundant. They meet in the dust and nothing is ever so pure or simple or loving that new day. Everything is perfect and he wakes at her side, joy in touching and sharing, laughing, singing… Endless praise rings out through the land. The garden pool reflects their image; they are delighted and lifted up. Then the sky turns black and the day grows cold. The land lays wasted, the flower fades, the colors melt and the water is troubled.

32

There is nowhere to hide, they run and death is there song. Empty in an empty land, grasping with a crippled hand, all the oceans filled with sand. There song has ceased, it must have gone and they touch no one, they are alone.

33

Stay Tears fill my eyes every time you go. It’s like missing a part of me, can’t you see? And I couldn’t live without you by my side so stay with me darling always. When I touch your hand everything’s alright. Your warmth makes me feel at home, don’t you know? And I couldn’t live without you by my side so stay with me darling always. I’m so alone in the cold of the night. Won’t you give me shelter in your smile, for awhile? See, I couldn’t live without you by my side So stay with me darling, always.

34

Heaven Came Down I am the lonely one and it’s sad, I lost the best friend I ever had. He was a dreamer and in his way, he brought life into the day. It seems so long ago we’d love and sing about the hearts of men, what joy can bring. We touched the people as they came to hear, oh, we touched them very near. And you wore the sun for a crown. I’m sure that heaven came down. Now that time is gone I often cry, I let those good days pass me by. I still remember you but it’s seldom clear, did you touch me very near. And you wore the sun for a crown. I’m sure that heaven came down.

35

Sunrise I see a star on the horizon, it’s just fading way. And a new day is dawning but I don’t see the sun. And I don’t want to tell you about love and I don’t want to sing more fairy tales. There is something about living, just don’t want to let it go. And I guess I’ll see the sun rise. Oceans wait forever and the wind is still. But the sands have been swept away and my eyes are cold. And I don’t want to tell you about love and I don’t want to sing more fairy tales. There is something about living, just don’t want to let it go. And I guess I’ll see the sun rise. Meadows turn to desert, I don’t know the rain. There’s no glory in dying and weary is the time of day.

36

And I don’t want to tell you about love and I don’t want to sing more fairy tales. There is something about living, just don’t want to let it go. And I guess I’ll see the sun rise.

37

The Promise I awaken to find that nothing much has changed. The winter still brings the cold, can't warm myself at the fire. Seasons have carried away the years and still the story's left unsaid. The scene so quickly fades as I reach out to touch. All things once so bright and new go with the darkness to grow old. Sometimes I feel left behind, yet there's still one place left to go. I've got to ride one more wind I've got to beat one more storm I've got to chase one more star I've got the promise spoken in a dream So I write one more song, sing it into the wind. Pour one more glass of wine until I find a place to hide.

38

It tastes bitter and it's sweet, you can shout it 'til you bleed.

42

Home Again When I get home again I’m going to do it right. I can’t remember when I’ve been off the road. Got to find me someplace where I can lay my head, a warm fireplace where I can kill the cold. I see a light burning, oh its burning warm. Arms reach out to me, to take me from the night. And someone’s there to greet me, touch my eyes with love, someplace I’ve been before long, long time ago. Meadows come alive as the day begins Colors chase away the grey, heighten my view. I see a river falling down from the sky And as it meets me I just drink it up.

43

44

The Day Is Gone The day is gone and left us with the night Time to lay our heads and close our eyes Let’s dream a dream of pillows in the sky Calling you and I to sail with them We’ll sing our song and dance along, laugh our way ‘till night turns into day Then morning breaks and sunlight wakes our eyes And we’ll love the day in every way We’ll sing our song and dance along, laugh our way ‘till night turns into day

45

Bye-bye Baby Bye-bye baby bye-bye, bye-bye baby bye-bye Bye-bye baby bye-bye, bye-bye baby bye-bye Well you say bye-bye when you’re riding in a car And you say bye-bye when you’re going really far And you say bye-bye sometimes when you mean hello, whoa, whoa, oh, oh, oh… Bye-bye baby bye-bye, bye-bye baby bye-bye Bye-bye baby bye-bye, bye-bye baby bye-bye You say bye-bye when you know its time for bed And you say bye-bye when the story has been read And you say bye-bye cause its fun wherever you go whoa, whoa, oh, oh, oh…

46

After the Dance After the dance, when the music's gone, as the laughter fades, the night is so cold. After the dance, when the leaves go dry, as the harsh wind blows, the land is so old. Memories still wait for me, they're rich and alive, they're a song I sing in a storm. After the dance, when the sky is black, as the silence falls, there's no one to hold. After the dance, when the music's gone, as the laughter fades, the story's been told.

47

Sing A Slow One ~for Carolyn Sing a slow one for me, sing it soft, sing it sweet. Take my heart, take my soul, my mind, lay me down on rolling sea. Paint a landscape for me, paint it green, paint it blue. Give me meadow, give me sparkling stream, whisper me on gentle breeze. Dance the last song with me, dance it close, dance it warm. Hold me hard, hold me all night long, rock me where I want to be.

48

Autumn's Twilight Mystical, shifting changes in evening's hue, with season, stirs the longing, not fully glimpsed. Powers the soul like some electric charge that bears resemblance to the mellow dusk that bathes the earth… softly, caressing. And whisked away, not to gentler, happier climes but that place, always here, inviting me to stay just awhile longer, just a moment...longer. The muse's wistful melody entices me to linger and sample such fare as to ease my rabid appetite. Indulging whim or something more substantial? At every turn I face myself as if in some forgotten carneys’ maze, dark and ill defining.

49

And to slip into a deep malaise, crying for release, the moonlit darkness compelling me, go forward. And ever to return to summer's hopeful vision, when all is bright, assured and tight within my grasp. The ocean's crashing waves sounding the crescendo, now distant as the undulating tide gently carries this pyre and it's passenger on the charted course.

50

Breathe Take a breath let the fragrance, texture and memory of this moment fill your senses Grasp it make this wonder, this glory, the crowning event of your life Do it again next hour, next day, throughout the days to come, until day's end And you will know happiness in full measure, spilling over to those whose lives you touch

51

Dream Lover Dream, oh keep me captive enslave me in her secret lair tether my aimless wandering that I might find purchase there Just a moment with her countenance perchance, to heal this fevered brow and compose my transmigration that I may return to her as now And in day spring as I awaken my whispered journeys turn to mist her fragrance with me lingers 'twas sunburst when we kissed

52

Ever ever, over the day breaks, a simple prelude to her waking ever, wanting to exclaim, the gentle wonder of her making ever, dancing to the morn, gracious 'ceptance of the taking ever, waiting for the eve, calm assuages at her quaking

53

The Wolds’s Lament Entwined and in the falling light, her dying breath extols the promise in the sky of the wonder on approach her majesty transfigured in glory's blinding flash to enter the eternal and fix her destination mourn not the passing that returns upon the morrow but wait for her appearance and the eminent display the skyline sure to shimmer and quake at her coming her own will know her as a memory 'fore the waking we carry her with us beyond the cairn's cold stillness as companion and mentor, to guide us 'long the path and at journey's finish as we make our discovery

54

she meets us at the threshold and bids us welcome home

55

Winter Blessing enter Winter's clean, pure, whiteness...but cold, so cold blizzard's fury at midnight, dangerous and unforgiving and just before dawn at morning's glow the earth is blanketed so soft and warm then first light explodes and dances on the ice crystals as if alive in the trees and I am alive in the trees singing this Winter's song

56

The Dance Begins for Tiffany She pirouettes across the stage, the music falls like Summer rain he catches her in sweet embrace and thus, the dance begins Love blossoms as the garden flower is nurtured by the Summer rain and all is vibrant, bright and new as thus, the dance begins and promises are spoken, covenants proclaimed and locked within their hearts to cherish, keep and hold I smile as they approach my view, their joy recalls the Summer rain 'cause all that's good is realized when thus, the dance begins
