Have a ‘bunch’ of fun at the Gold Country Fair Welcome to the 2008 Gold Country Fair — A Grape Adventure! We have four days of adventure from the far corners of the world to right here in Placer County waiting to be discovered. Our Grape Adventure started before the Fair even opens with our first ever commercial and homemade wine competition. You’ll want to come by the Wine Garden each evening from 4-7 p.m. for wine tasting. Or come by the Food Court Stage every afternoon at 3:30 where Save Mart is sponsoring all kinds of grape tasting — table grapes, jelly, syrup, etc. Plus we will be exhibiting wine-themed art in our home arts department. At the Gold Country Fair, there is an adventure around every corner. On Point Lawn near the Fair office, you will
Greg Hegwer Gold Country Fair CEO discover the Wide World of Tigers, affectionate cats descended from wild tigers in India. Or travel to the jungles and deserts of the world, in the Placer Building, where Brad’s World Reptiles are there for you to touch, hold, or just get goosebumps over. What’s more memorable than a trip to the County Fair? Where, for less than the cost of a movie, you can pet animals, eat a corn dog, laugh at clowns, be part of the circus, scream on a carnival ride, lis-
ten to a great band, or see cars crash without getting hurt at the Destruction Derby. At this year’s fair you can expect to experience the traditional elements of a county fair, but also some notso-traditional elements such as the Xtremely Amped Motocross Rock Show, and Fast Friday’s Motorcycle Races Gold Cup track championship. As always, the county fair brings some great entertainment with bands such a cabaret-style Eagles Show, the classic rock star Greg Kihn. Plus after a two-year absence, Skip Banks, the Balloon Man is back, crazy and climbing inside his big yellow balloon. Don’t forget to bring the little ones to experience Kid’s

You can help support the youth of Placer County at the Junior Livestock Auction as they showcase their animals. They are hardworking young adults and they deserve your support! So join us as we celebrate the Gold Country Fair and please support our sponsors, vendors and the people of Placer County who help us bring you the best hometown Fair! See you at the Fair!

engines and take aim at each other in the mud of the Gold Country Fair. Drivers do their best, while driving in a bed of mud, to smash the other cars to smithereens. The audience cheers as mud flies, wheels spin in the gooey mess, and one car after another is annihilated, or the overworked and overheated engines give up in a smoky haze. In this motorsport, event officials encour-
age plenty of ramming and smashing. According to promoter Dutch Holland, the Auburn Derby will be one of the most exciting of the season with a high level of interest from throughout Northern California. For fans, purchasing your ticket early is recommended. Always a sold-out event, there will be long lines waiting for available tickets and entry into the arena.

Carnival rides twist, twirl and thrill Discounts available on rides until Sept. 3 at Fair Office or Save Mart As you drive from Auburn-Folsom Road into the Gold Country Fair parking lot, your first sight will be of spectacular rides reaching high into the air, twisting clockwise, counter-clockwise, up and down, until they elicit blood-curdling screams from thrill seekers. And waves of giggles from children will reach your ears as youngsters twirl, dip and bounce in their own special carnival adventure. At the 2008 Fair, you will discover rides to entertain, or give you a rush, along-side the simple Merry-Go-Round! Who can resist tossing a ball into a basket on the midway in hopes of winning one of those giant stuffed animals you see teenagers carrying around? Butler Amusements will offer Wristband Specials each day this year, which allow unlimited rides during carnival hours. Wristbands can be purchased

Discounts are available until 5 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 3, at the Fair Office or at Save Mart in Auburn. Popular rides that are expected at this Fair are the Century Wheel, Himalaya, Kamikaze, Ring of Fire, Gravitron, and the Zipper. Safety is of the utmost importance at the Gold Country Fair and for Butler Amusements. Regular health and safety inspections at fairs and festivals ensure high quality for the estimated 350 million people who visit a carnival each year in the United States. Rides at the Gold Country Fair will be inspected, prior to opening, by a representative from the California Fair Services Authority. A carnival safety video is available on the Gold Country Fair Web site (goldcountryfair.com, select Gold Country Fair) and parents are encouraged to watch it with their children. Produced for children ages 6-12, this eight-minute video includes safe behavior while visiting the carnival midway, starts with family at home preparing to go to a fair and instructs children as to what clothes and shoes to wear, rules to follow for ride safety and general safe behavior.

Fast Fridays championship revs up the Fair On Friday night, dirt track racing at its finest will decide who rules at the Fast Friday’s Motorcycle Speedway Gold Cup Championship! Fast Fridays Motorcycle Speedway has attracted, year after year, the best speedway racers in America and is the top motorcycle speedway track. For the championship races, the best 16 track racers from Fast Fridays Speedway’s summer long racing series are assigned a starting position formula that will require them to start from each starting lane one, two, three and four. The start will see all four track racers fly as the green light is turned on and the pink tapes of the starting gate are activat-

turn handle-bar to handle-bar, fighting for a position. At this point, the excitement is just out of the gate. Each time across the finish line the laps are counted until the white flag is waved signaling three laps are completed and only one lap remains. As the checkered flag waves each skidding racer receives his point rewards, three points for first place, two for second, and one for third and zero for fourth. Points are tallied to see who is the champion. It’s pure excitement that keeps you on the edge of your seat! The event requires fair and race admission tickets.

when he moved to San Francisco in 1974, according to www.gregkihn.com. In 1976 he recorded his first album with his own band. Through the ’70s, he released an album each year and built a strong cult following through constant touring, becoming his label’s biggest seller. In 1981, he earned his first bona fide hit with the Top 20 single, “The Breakup Song (They Don’t Write ‘Em),” from the “RocKihnRoll” album. He continued in a more commercial vein through the ‘80s with a series of pun-titled albums: “Kihntinued” (1982), “Kihnspiracy” (1983), “Kihntageous” (1984), and “Citizen Kihn” (1985). GK’s most recent project is the release of his latest book, “Carved in Rock,” a collection of short stories written by musicians such as Ray Manzarek (The Doors), Pete Townsend (The Who) and Joan Jett. Kihn is also the No. 1 rated morning drive time jock for KFOX (San Jose/San Francisco).
Life in the Fast Lane — The Eagles Stage Show Life in the Fast Lane is not another tribute band. This is a moving, cabaret-style production show with all the best songs from The Eagles. In our increasingly fickle pop culture, we tend to change our heroes and music a little like we change our rock ‘n’ roll T-shirts. Eagles fans remain steadfast despite time and fashion and despite the words “They will never forget you till somebody new comes along,” a line in “New Kid in Town.” Now the show “Life in the Fast Lane” has come along celebrating the music of the Eagles like you have never seen it before. A new show with all the Eagles greatest hits and solo hits of Henley, Frey, Schmit, and Walsh. Take this musical journey on the Coors Country Stage at 8 and 10 p.m. Thursday.

The Zipper is a favorite of both teens and young adults. While the ‘cages’ holding two passengers apiece rise and descend on a tower boom, each spins independently and the entire boom turns, too. A towering addition to the midway is the majestic Century Wheel, offering patrons a sweeping view from a height of nearly 67 feet! Passengers are seated in separate gondolas and then whisked smoothly over the top and down again, reminiscent of the ferris wheel. The Century Wheel is a pleasant ride for the entire family.

Giant cats are affection trained Brian McMillan’s Wild World of Tigers brings to you a journey where kids and adults can tame their curiosity about wild tigers. Brian McMillan has created a new show that combines education and entertainment into a dynamic adventure into the wilds of India. Their show, while exciting and entertaining, at the same time fosters a desire to preserve and learn about the endangered species. The trainers will demonstrate their affection training methods while showing the audience what these beautiful creatures are capable of when put in a caring and mutually respectful environment.
All of these animals have been bottle-raised, since they were small cubs, with the trainers who are with them today and every day. The importance of a strong bond and mutual respect is necessary when dealing with animals of this size and caliber. The tigers are movie stars and you may have seen them in many films, commercials, television shows, and magazine advertisements. From movies, such as “Evan Almighty” and “Jungle Book,” to television shows like “CSI: NY” and “Monk.” The tigers will be housed on the Point Lawn (near the Fair Office) and will perform in three shows daily.

The Swan Bros. circus has been part of the fair for 30 years.
Clowning around The Swan Bros. Circus is not your average circus. You won’t find elephants or tigers, but you will find slapstick comedy, magic, clowns and Trixie the Wonder Dog. The zany duo of Zippy and Hi-Tops has been performing together for 30 years at the Gold Country Fair. Under the 30 ft. by 50 ft. big top tent, expect to find slapstick clowning, offthe-wall humor, and lots of audience participation. Also known as Andy and Mike Swan, the brothers have been performing together since 1972. Clown Andy says his best experience has been riding on Big Bertha, the elephant during a show in Reno. He was also a winner on the 1977 The Gong Show, juggling bowling balls, a chainsaw, clubs and fire torches over a volunteer’s head. The Swan Bros. Circus performs three shows daily in Kid’s World and watch out — you might see them wandering around having fun at the Fair.

Not only do his reptiles provide an exciting interactive exhibit for fair visitors, but it is a hands-on classroom for the many kids who spend hours there, becoming ambassadors for Brad. There will be shows each day showcasing a variety of the reptiles. A volunteer assists a fairgoer in petting a rabbit. People with unique needs are welcome during Special Persons Day, when the fairgrounds are open to cater to those with special needs.
A special day for those with special needs Friday, Sept. 5, has been designated Special Persons Day at the Gold Country Fair. This annual event was created by the Fair Board of Directors to offer an opportunity for people with special needs to see the Fair without dealing with the large crowds that are common during regular Fair hours. Volunteers from throughout the community will be available to assist the Fair’s special guests by acting as guides, pushing wheelchairs, or providing general supervision. While most of the Fair exhibits will not open until later in the day, the horticulture/floriculture exhibits will be open as well as selected carnival rides, which will operate from 10 a.m. to noon. Months of hard work by local 4-H and FFA members pay off as locally raised beef, swine, lambs, goats, rabbits and poultry are auctioned to the highest bidder during the Gold Country Fair’s Junior Livestock Auction, Saturday, Sept. 6. The youth spend hours after school and on weekends feeding, grooming and learning how to show their animals in the judging ring. Now they will discover that all that hard work can be rewarded with a paycheck, but the lessons learned in responsibility are theirs for a lifetime. The auction starts Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. Private individuals, groups and businesses may purchase any of the hundreds of top quality livestock raised as 4H and FFA projects. If you don’t have room in your own freezer for the meat from the animals, there may be a local food closet that would be grateful to receive a donation of your purchase. Check with those organizations first to see if they can accept fresh meat.
