Student COPY GNUR 383: Leadership for Professional Nursing Practice Simulation Description of Scenario: There will be one scenario involving all of the above roles. It is estimated the simulation will be 45-60 minutes in length. All student roles will be randomly chosen. The focus of the simulation is on leadership and management therefore less emphasis will be placed on vital signs, skills, and medications. You will receive the data you need to make decisions during the scenario. Students with patient or family roles will be expected to be in character of the role in which they are playing. This will be fully described to the student before the simulation begins. The patient diagnoses are included below for students’ preparation prior to the simulation. The nurses in the scenario will be given two “lifelines” to be used at any time during the scenario. A “lifeline” gives the nurse the ability to stop the simulation for a short period of time (5 minutes) in order to discuss the situation, ask for feedback, and/or illicit information. The nurses may collaborate with each other at any time during the simulation experience without using a “lifeline”. Simulation faculty will meet with the observers for a short debriefing session prior to the main debriefing session with the entire group. Clinical Outcomes On completion of the simulation the student will: 1. Collaborate effectively with health care team members 2. Delegate responsibilities for patient care appropriately 3. Utilize resources to assure safe patient and family centered care 4. Demonstrate effective management skills Situation: It is 3pm and the beginning of an 8 hour shift for two staff RNs on a general medical/surgical floor of a Magnet hospital. The two RNs will receive report during walking rounds with the charge nurse, who is in the middle of a 12 hour shift (7a-7p). The care delivery method for this medical/surgical floor is modified team nursing (Charge nurse, RN, certified nursing assistant) with one CNA being shared by two RNs. Patients: Betty Burns 84 y.o. Female, Pneumonia X3 days, weakness Mark Martinez 44 y.o. Male, diabetic, discharge today Mike Russell 26 y.o. Male, paraplegic d/t diving accident/ sacral decubitus Louise Stephens 98 y.o.
