Through interactive seminars, networking sessions, business trips, consulting projects and cultural experiences, Global Village interns learn the tools essential to becoming successful leaders. multiple languages, and offering unique perspectives based on the group’s varied educational backgrounds. The Global Village experience is truly unique. The program requires no academic prerequisites and delivers no traditional grades. The internship provides “learning experiences,” not “classes”; “discussions,” not “lectures.” Interns establish their own goals and objectives and work with Iacocca Institute® staff to map out an experiencedbased action plan.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES ●

Increase Business and Industry Knowledge

Enhance Leadership and Entrepreneurial Skills

Develop a Global and Cultural Networking

SEMINAR-STYLE COURSES

Exposure to some of the most critical topics affecting companies of today and leaders of tomorrow is what the Global Village is all about. With more than 50 courses presented by 40 facilitators, including at least 12 international instructors, you will discover business trends and practices needed to understand the global marketplace. Work with skilled practitioners to develop new leadership and entrepreneurial talents. Interact with your peers and discover the thought processes of other cultures. Your personal guide will work with you to develop goals and select the learning experiences that will help you achieve success.

EXECUTIVE VISITORS

Founded in 1865, Lehigh University has developed a significant number of viable, rewarding, and long-standing partnerships with important leaders in business and industry. During your stay at the Global Village,

2

you will have the opportunity to interact with more than 60 executives who represent large and small corporations, family-owned businesses, start-up companies, and sole proprietorships. These interactions are a key feature of the program. Through roundtable discussions, Q&A sessions with guest speakers, company tours, and project work, interns are encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities to meet influential executives who will assist them with developing their professional network. Each week in the Global Village, toplevel executives visit the program to spend time interacting with interns. During these visits, they meet with small groups of interns for informal discussions about business trends, corporate ventures, career paths, successes and failures, and the future. More importantly, it is the interns themselves who direct the conversation by asking questions, by raising objections, and by offering alternative points-of-view and the best practices of their respective nations.

FOR FUTURE LEADERS OF BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY

COUNTRY PANELS

Business persons are being challenged to operate in an increasingly complex, interdependent, and dynamic global environment. To compete and succeed, firms must often make considerable investments outside of their own borders. Understanding the business climate, opportunities, cultural nuances, and acceptable business practices of countries around the world is a cornerstone of the Global Village program and provides the foundation for Global Village Country Panel sessions. As a Global Village participant, you will utilize expertise and skill to serve as a Business Development Consultant for your own home country. Challenged to provide the right information to a potential investor, you must convince the potential investor that your country has the best opportunity, incentives, and environment for their business proposition case to be successful, rather than other countries the investor

may be considering for the same investment proposition. Through case work prepared by investors with actual experience, you will compete, challenge, learn, and represent your country and its business environment.

CONSULTING PROJECTS

Throughout your weeks at the Global Village, you will be assigned to an international project team. Under the supervision of the sponsoring company’s executives and your Iacocca Institute project mentor, you will be challenged to provide a solution for your client. The designs, demands, and deadlines are real, and so are the expectations that your team’s project deliverables will be a success. Everyone will learn basic project management techniques and be taught how to utilize project management tools. But most importantly, you will learn the skills necessary to succeed as a multi-cultural team. If you have thought about becoming a senior project manager, then this is your opportunity to experience the pressures and reap the rewards.

COMPANY VISITS

You won’t stand still! Included in your six weeks are a day trip to New York City and a four–day visit to Washington, D.C. In addition, each week you may choose to visit local distribution and manufacturing facilities, nonprofit and governmental agencies, small entrepreneurial firms, and medical- and technology-related businesses.

INTERN-LED SEMINARS AND PANEL DISCUSSIONS

The Global Village staff recognizes that interns need a forum to discuss global “hot” topics. Time is built into the schedule to allow for these discussions to take place. Seminars can be arranged by staff or interns. In addition to seminars, the Global Village provides a series of panel discussions. These panels may focus on globalization, career building, servant leadership, global warming, immigration, and visa legal issues.

Again and again, visiting executives tell us what a rare joy it is to have the opportunity to learn from others as well as to teach from their own experiences.

There was no program for young entrepreneurs with this kind of richness and diversity. SO WE BUILT IT . ● RICHARD M. BRANDT

CUSTOMIZATION The Global Village provides an experience unique to each participant. First you develop a set of goals, then you and your personal guide select from the many options to customize your experience to work toward these objectives. SCHEDULE

Not only did this experience enhance my interests and abilities in cultures and in business, but it also gave me

greater insights into leadership and team-based performance.

With so many choices and variables, your Global Village experience is unique. Your learning experience is customized based on the courses you select, the executives you choose to meet, and the trips you elect to attend. Each year the program offers innovative consulting projects, and adds new executives, facilitators, and courses to the curriculum. The team dynamics add a cross-cultural component to each of your learning experiences.

CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING

Your colleagues will be interns from different academic majors, professions, countries, and cultures— a picture of diversity. You are encouraged to bring a formal dress costume from your culture, as well as anecdotes, songs, poems, and other evidence of your heritage. You might also bring music or films about your country or region on CD-ROM, audio tape, or DVDVHS video. The Global Village will have many learning experiences designed to share, celebrate, and understand the value of international diversity.

To encourage social interaction across cultural barriers and enhance their multicultural experience, interns share a room in on-campus dormitory housing. The dormitory provides a family-style common kitchen, living rooms, and dining area.

GUIDES

To help you to weigh your choices and to optimize your time at the Global Village, the Iacocca Institute will assign each accepted applicant a personal guide. Selected from the Iacocca Institute’s staff and accomplished professionals, guides work with you to define your individual set of learning experiences before you arrive at Lehigh University and throughout the duration of the program; help you to integrate the new perspectives, experiences, and ideas into your present skills, practices and abilities while you are here and when you return; and encourage you to reach your goals both in the short and long term.

FOR FUTURE LEADERS OF BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY

a global EXPERIENCE After the pilot program for the Global Village in 1997, Lee Iacocca said, “In a changing world, a first step toward leadership is taking advantage of a genuine opportunity. A second is recognizing others that do the same.” This summer, the door to that network opens again and you too can join 943 global villagers from 104 countries. The entrance is at the Iacocca Institute. You must take the first step. THE IACOCCA INSTITUTE

I built my schedule with the help of my guide. Together, we chose the executives that would be most beneficial for me to meet, the courses that would broaden my spheres of knowledge, and the business trips that would show me a successful practical application of my business knowledge. The combination was chosen to ensure that I would reach my set goals as well as grow, both personally and professionally. ● KATHRYN SEARLE
