A Hard Look at Global Realities: Is Environmental Activism Really Effective? Humankind’s pursuit of money and power can lead to environmental devastation and abuses of human rights. But there is cause for optimism. In Ecuador, a small group of indigenous Amazonian people called the Achuar confronted the money and power of multinational corporations — and won. In their fight, it became abundantly clear that another global reality exists, i.e., the power and effectiveness of small groups of committed people.
