The Global AIDS Pandemic: Key Facts Unless otherwise noted, all statistics are from the UNAIDS 2008 Report on the Global AIDS Epidemic. •

The HIV/AIDS pandemic causes approximately 7,400 new infections and 5,500 deaths daily.



An estimated 33 million people worldwide were living with HIV in 2007, two-thirds (67 percent) of whom were in sub-Saharan Africa.



Approximately 2.7 million people became newly infected with HIV in 2007, 1.9 million in sub-Saharan Africa.



In 2007, approximately 2 million people died of AIDS-related illnesses. Approximately 75 percent of these deaths occurred in sub-Saharan Africa.



More than 1,000 children under 15 years of age are infected with HIV every day, most as a result of mother-to-child transmission of the virus.



Approximately 2 million children were living with HIV in 2007, up from 1.6 million in 2001. Children make up approximately 6 percent of the total number of people living with HIV.



An estimated 370,000 children were newly infected with HIV in 2007 – approximately 14 percent of the total new infections.



An estimated 270,000 children died of AIDS-related illnesses in 2007 – approximately 14 percent of the total deaths due to AIDS.



In 2007 there were about 1.8 million children living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa. This represents nearly 90 percent of all HIV-positive children worldwide.



In sub-Saharan Africa, approximately 12 million children under age 19 have lost one or both parents to AIDS.



Approximately 15.5 million women were living with HIV in 2007, up from 13.8 million in 2001.



Worldwide in 2007, 34 percent of HIV-positive pregnant women received antiretroviral drugs to prevent transmission of HIV to their babies. This percentage increased substantially from 14 percent in 2005. (UNGASS, April 2008)



In sub-Saharan Africa, almost 63 percent of adults living with HIV in 2007 were women.

As of December 2007, nearly 3 million people living with HIV worldwide were receiving antiretroviral treatment (ART) for their illness. This represents just 31 percent of the 9.7 million people in need of ART.



In 2007, 198,000 children living with HIV worldwide were receiving ART. (WHO Progress Report, June 2008)
