Welcome to Great Lakes Institute of Management! It is my pleasure to pen this message for the MBA aspirants, the bright stars who will make up the sixth batch of our PGPM – ‘The Patriots’. Our PGPM course is unique in that it satisfies both vertical (industry specifications) and horizontal (functional concentrations) curiosities. Global Alliances in Management Excellence (GAME) : As part of its international plans, Great Lakes Institute of Management has a MoU with Stuart School of Business, Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, USA. The Yale-Great Lakes Research Centre has been established with the objective of pursuing advanced research in management. The Institute has entered into a MoU with the Nanyang Technological University of Singapore, Universiti Tun Abdul Razak, Malaysia, C.T. Bauer College of Business, University of Houston and IIT, Madras for academic exchange programs. The GAME plan aims to forge alliances with premier management schools across the world. This will pave the way for exchange of students and faculty and thus foster a seamless transfer of cutting-edge knowledge, experience and innovation on a global scale, in keeping with the changing times.

Program Description The program is designed to equip a student with all the tools and skills needed to effectively predict and respond to complex business challenges that arise in the modern economic environment. Program is divided into 8 terms which includes a year long individual empirical research study. The first 4 terms consist of core courses in Strategy, Marketing, Finance and Accounting, Organizational Behavior, Operations and Quantitative Decisions. Specialization begins in the fifth term. Students select their areas of functional specialization and can opt for a ‘dual major’. Students are required to learn Mandarin (Chinese) for the first 4 terms along with a brief exposure to the best of Indian philosophy and ancient texts.
Pedagogy The curriculum and pedagogy emphasize the development of a student's skills and abilities to apply management theories and concepts to live problems in business. The teaching methods include lectures, case studies, group discussions, business games, role-plays, seminars and group work. The program integrates the use of latest technology available in learning various principles of management. People skills are the foundation upon which management education rests and ironically can never be taught in classrooms. We give students the opportunity to develop their interpersonal and leadership skills by working in groups and taking challenges head on.
Horizontals and Verticals Specializations are structured into 'Horizontals' and 'Verticals'. While the horizontals focus on functional areas, the verticals focus on industry-specific specializations.

Exposure to chosen horizontals and verticals is through empirical research studies, electives, guest lectures and coursework. Horizontals are functional specializations enabling students to focus on careers in their chosen functional areas in the industries represented by their chosen verticals.
Pool of 18 electives to choose from – minimum of 8 to be selected in a functional area to qualify for specialization.
Students may either opt for dual specializations by choosing six electives each from any two functional areas or choosing to specialize in one functional area and select the remaining electives in accordance with their interests.
Empirical Study The ‘Yale-Great Lakes Centre for Management Research’ aims to promote, facilitate and nurture India-centric management related research. The centre is a bridge between scholars from India and around the world. As part of the curriculum, every student is required to carry out a year-long empirical research study, with publishable results, on a contemporary business issue of their choice under the guidance of professors or industry experts.
International Study Tour An international study tour is organized every year to go with our motto of ‘Global Mindset, Indian Roots’. Last batch of Great Lakers visited Singapore and Malaysia where they interacted with the best international B schools, industry and top brass of government . The 8 day visit helped in understanding the market and the working of organizations outside India. Students formed groups based on their specialization and visited organizations across diverse verticals like marketing, retail and finance.

Karma Yoga at Great Lakes is an excellent example of the curriculum which is a blend of the best practices of the west and the value system of the East. In keeping with the Indian philosophy of doing one’s duty without being attached to its fruits, the Karma Yoga initiative, an integral part of the PGPM curriculum, allows students to create lasting changes in the lives of relatively powerless people in society. Students take part in activities ranging from teaching underprivileged children to providing care for the terminally ill and the elderly.

Eligibility Criteria All applicants are required to appear for GMAT/CAT before applying to Great Lakes Institute of Management. The current batch of Great Lakers is operating out of a centrally air-conditioned campus in the serene locality of Saidapet, Chennai. The campus has many facilities including Wi-Fi classrooms with the latest teaching aids, a well equipped gym and a canteen.
Resource Centre The Great Lakes Library houses an eclectic collection of imported and local academic texts, management books, top management journals and magazines, course materials, project reports, annual reports, national news papers, case studies, articles and an audio-video center. It also provides access to some of the best research databases available like EBSCO, ISI Emerging markets, Proquest, CMIE, Indiastat.com etc. that help the students in their study and research activities.
For PGPM 2009, Great Lakes Institute of Management will accept CAT score for the year 2007 and 2008 only. Similarly candidate can submit GMAT score not older than 2006. All applicants should have at least a bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognized institution. A work experience of minimum two years is highly desirable. Outstanding graduates with less than two years of experience would be considered on a case to case basis. *Internship, article ship and part time work experience will not be considered as a valid experience.
New campus The new campus is located in a 14 acre plot near the historic town of Mahabalipuram on the East Coast Road. The state of the art campus is an environment friendly green building with different blocks dedicated to research, faculty offices and housing, administrative, student residences, recreation centres etc. Facilities include an open air theatre, hostels for students, resource centre and cafeteria to name a few. The construction of this new campus is in full swing and is scheduled to be ready for occupation by March 2009. The program will be a compulsory residential program with all students required to live on campus. Single occupancy rooms will be provided to students and there will also be provision for family accommodation. ‘The Patriots’, class of 2009-10, will move to a new campus for the PGPM program. The Green Campus which is a part of our social responsibility will inculcate the spirit of social consciousness and patriotism.

While we give due importance to consistent academic performance and good CAT/GMAT scores, we also look for strong interpersonal skills and the potential to handle a rigorous one year program. The average work experience of the current batch is 42 months. However, we do consider applicants with less than 2 years work experience who are able to demonstrate high levels of maturity and leadership qualities. We evaluate professional accomplishments and clarity of purpose in pursuing management education through the essays. We look at recommendation letters for demonstrated abilities of the candidate as seen by the supervisor. The overall personality and potential will drive the selection decision. Professional recommendation for candidates with substantial work experience is preferred.

Events and Student Initiatives Student Committees
Entrepreneurship Development Forum (EDF)
Great Lakes is a truly student driven institution and students take care of all institution building activities, with guidance from the management. Students take the lead in all aspects of the running of the Institute, from managing placements and admissions to overseeing the canteen services. At the beginning of each academic year, student committees are formed based on students’ interests and aptitudes, and these committees become responsible for various processes and initiatives. The Student Council liaises between the management and students. The Placement Committee works towards getting the best placement opportunities for the entire batch. The Admissions Committee takes care of the admission process of the following batch. The Events Committee organizes cultural events and celebrations. Apart from these there are several other dedicated committees for Branding & Public Relations, Guest lectures, IT & Infrastructure, Library, Cafeteria services and so on. These committees create an environment for developing teamwork and leadership qualities in students.
The Entrepreneurship Development Forum (EDF) provides a platform to develop the necessary skills for budding entrepreneurs at Great Lakes. The EDF Committee consists of four sub groups, devoted to specific objectives within the overall framework of the forum. The Business Plan group helps students to transform their ideas into business plans; the Consulting group provides consulting services to live industry projects. The Networking group gets the right contacts from the industry and the Karma group directs the implementation and execution of business plans. Within a short span of time, EDF has been instrumental in building a good relationship with many top organizations such as NEN, TIE, IMCI and CII Young India.
Yale-Great Lakes International Conference
Human Resource Conclave was an event initiated last year. It brings together stalwarts of HR field who discuss and share industry specific perspectives on the theme of the event. This provides a platform for students to interact with the industry and the students stand to gain from the unique paradigms in management that is hard to find in management textbooks. The importance of HR cannot be over emphasized in today’s economy and hence Great Lakes has taken this unique initiative to hold a conclave.
The Yale-Great Lakes Centre for Management Research aims to promote, facilitate, and advance India-centric management related research. The Centre along with the Yale-Great Lakes Committee, conducts an annual international conference which is a platform for illustrious scholars from leading institutions in India and abroad to express their views on the latest areas of research in management. The centre also comes out with its own publication “Great Lakes Herald” a half-yearly journal of research articles.
Successful Women in Management (SWIM)
L’attitude 13° 05’ The flagship event of Great Lakes, L’attitude 13° 05’ is a national level inter-collegiate management fest with events like paper presentations, business plan presentations, panel discussions etc., in which teams from various B-Schools all over the country converge and present their ideas. It is an intellectual extravaganza giving students an opportunity to interact with the best minds of the country. It also builds a platform for them to network with future leaders from other premier business schools.
HR Conclave
Successful Women in Management (SWIM) is an initiative by the students of Great Lakes which aims at identifying and recognizing successful women from various walks of life. This initiative, led by the SWIM Committee, aims at encouraging women to pursue leadership positions in management by focusing on overcoming the obstacles faced by them. The highlight of the endeavour is the SWIM event consisting of power talks by eminent guests, panel discussions, quiz competitions and the release of the SWIM magazine. Over the past years, SWIM event has been presided over by eminent women leaders including Ms. Kiran Bedi and Ms. Anu Aga.

Life at Great Lakes Sangamitra Sangamitra is the intra collegiate cultural festival of Great Lakes. It provides a wonderful stage for the students to showcase their talents in various cultural activities. In the midst of busy academic schedules, students manage to find time to pursue their passions, preparing and practicing for the grand show. The students compete fiercely amongst themselves to outperform each other with the spirit very natural to cultural festivals. It is a welcome break from academics for all. Celebrations at Great Lakes Birthdays at Great Lakes are occasions for celebration and each Great Laker’s birthday is celebrated on the following weekend with cakes and wishes. Festivals such as Pongal, Onam, Diwali, Christmas etc. and National festivals like the Independence Day are celebrated by all Great Lakers with great enthusiasm.
Competitions The Events Committee organizes various competitions for Great Lakers, throughout the year. These include quiz competitions where the sharpest and smartest minds clash to win accolades. LAN Gaming competitions are organized for all the gaming enthusiasts. Popular games like Age Of Empires are the attraction of this competition.
Student Clubs The Institute places a lot of emphasis on the creative development of its students. Thus, it encourages the students to take initiatives to form various clubs of their interest. The current clubs at Great Lakes include Glick (photography club), Dalal Street (investors’ club), Ispeak (public speaking club), The Fountain (readers’ club) etc. Glick conducts photo walks and brings out newsletters at regular intervals with articles on better photography and also publishes the photos by the group members. Dalal Street is a forum for equity market enthusiasts. At the end of the year, the group that performs the best takes the “The Great Lakes Investment Challenge” award. Ispeak provides opportunities for the students to get over their inhibitions about public speaking. The Fountain facilitates discussions about books and debates on current topics. These clubs provide a forum for learning from peers while satiating the creative spirit of students.
