Dear Friends, It is with very mixed emotions that I write you today to tell you that I am withdrawing my candidacy for Ward 6 Alderman at Large. I have been recruited to serve as President and Chief Executive Officer of AIG Global Real Estate, a business with over 300 employees and $24 billion in real estate assets located in 50 countries. Both the travel requirements and the overall demands of this assignment will make it impossible for me to serve effectively as an Alderman and devote the focus and diligence to this role that Newton residents deserve. Earlier this summer, while working hard on my campaign, I was approached about this opportunity. Following extensive meetings with AIG senior management, consultants and officials of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, my employment arrangements with the Company were finalized on July 30th. Due to AIG disclosure requirements, I was unable to share this news publicly until today, August 7th, when the company made its announcement. The decision to withdraw my candidacy was difficult for me. I was very excited about stepping up my civic involvement and serving on the Board of Alderman. However, as Yogi Berra once said: “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.” On balance, when I looked at the opportunity for learning, challenge, personal and professional growth, as well as the opportunity to do public service by maximizing the recovery of U.S. taxpayer dollars, it was hard to say “No.” The team that has been recruited to lead the AIG restructuring effort is top notch in all regards: intelligence, work ethic, competence and character. This chance to join them in solving complex investment and organizational issues was one that I could not pass up. I am gratified at the endorsements, volunteer assistance and encouragement I have received for my candidacy. I want to personally thank all of you who made a financial commitment to my campaign, and let you know that I will be returning all of your contributions over the coming weeks. Claire and I love living in Newton and remain very committed to public service here. Claire is currently Vice‐Chair of the School Committee and is running in a contested race for re‐election this November. She has been a tireless and effective advocate for the Newton Public Schools and I hope that you will support her candidacy for re‐election. As an engaged citizen, I will continue to support the initiatives and candidates that advance the four key priorities of my campaign: i) closing Newton’s chronic operating deficit, ii) repairing our buildings and infrastructure, iii) revitalizing our village centers and commercial areas, and iv) rebuilding trust in City government. Once my “tour of duty” at AIG is complete, I look forward to once again having the opportunity to play a more active role in Newton’s civic affairs. Thank you again for your support. All the best,
