“Because The Bible Said So” Read 2 Tim 3:10 to 4:8 Rosella Shishido
I have three Bibles that I consider my favorites. The Thompson Chain Reference Bible trained me to search the Scriptures. The Word in Life Study Bible is loaded with biblical history, culture and customs of the ancient world. And then there’s my very first Bible, a simple Gideon Bible that belonged to my Mama. This Bible has no study helps, not even a concordance. It’s aged and worn, with many verses highlighted in yellow because God spoke to me through them. The Bible is a lot more than just a favorite book to read. It is the Word of God, the ultimate authority of our Christian faith. All Scripture is given to us by inspiration from God. We believe what the Bible says simply because it is His Word. Because the Bible said so. The Bible is a God-given instrument designed to equip us in our Christian walk. It shows us how to live as followers of Jesus, which results in productive, purposeful and meaningful lives. It gives us hope, direction and encouragement. Like an instruction manual for any appliance, it can’t help us if it remains unread. It has been said of the Bible, “This Book is the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding; its histories are true, and its decisions are immutable. Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe, practice it to be holy. It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you. It is the traveler’s map, the pilgrim’s staff, the pilot’s compass, the soldier’s sword, and the Christian’s character. Here paradise is restored, heaven opened, and the gates of hell disclosed. Christ is its grand subject, our good its design, and the glory of God its end. It should fill the memory, rule the heart, and guide the feet. Read it slowly, frequently, prayerfully. It is a mine of wealth, a paradise of glory, and a river of pleasure. Follow its precepts and it will lead you to Calvary, to the empty tomb, to a resurrected life in Christ; yes, to glory itself, for eternity.”
P R AY E R Thank You, Lord, for giving us the Bible and the freedom to read it anywhere, anytime. Help me to read Your Word daily with an open heart and to put into practice what I hear from You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
