Geography 2: Final Review 2. 30 years ago oil sources were mostly domestic, today however they are mostly imported. 4.The thinning of the ozone layer, the disposal of nuclear waste, homelessness, drug abuse, sea level rise and global warming, loss of biodiversity, the break-up of the Soviet Union, the break-up of the family. These are all critical problems facing the world today and none of them can be understood properly without an understanding of geography or geology. The study of Geography at degree level encourages an understanding of physical and social processes in a variety of places and under varying environmental conditions. 6. • Air pollution: Urban smog; vehicles and industrial sources, affected by topography, respiratory illnesses, usually worse in less than more developed. • Atmosphere: caused by human pollution and volcanic action, which impacts global warming & acid rain. • Acid rain: effects away from source: acified water severely damaging plant and animal life, horrible for the atmosphere. • Biodiversity: the destruction of a relatively small habit area can cause the extinction of a species w/in a small range. • Land: humans causing deforestation (affect oxygen cycle), soil erosion (soil not having enough time to rebound) • Global Warming: enhanced greenhouse effect & consequences. • Water pollution & shortages: industrial and ag., caused by growing pop., large pop. concentrations near small supplies. • General waste disposal & storage: toxic & radioactive wastes going into the soil. 7. •

Immigration: as more and more Zionists immigrated to Palestine – many with the express wish of taking over the land for a Jewish state – the indigenous population became increasingly alarmed. Eventually, fighting broke out, with escalating waves of violence. Hitler’s rise to power and Nazi atrocities, combined with Zionist activities to sabotage efforts to place Jewish refugees in western countries, led to increased Jewish immigration to Palestine, and conflict grew. Population: the original population of what is now Israel was 96 percent Muslim and Christian. Yet, Muslim and Christian refugees are prohibited from returning to their homes in the self-described Jewish state
8. Positive: Many economists assess economic globalization as having a positive impact, linking increased economic transactions across national borders to increased world GDP, and opportunities for economic development Positive: Globalization has increased transmission of popular culture easily and inexpensively from the developed countries of the North throughout the world. Negative: Globalization is contributing to the exploitation of the poor by the rich, and as a threat to traditional cultures as the process of modernization changes
societies. There are some who link the negative aspects of globalization to terrorism lure. Loss of uniqueness of any one place in the world.
