Garhi Yasin is a town located in the north of Sindh province of Pakistan. It is the second largest town of the district Shikarpur, having population of more than 14,000. Garhi Yasin is situated on the right bank of River Indus. Garhi Yasin region has always been an important because of proximity with the Shikarpur, a place that commanded the trade route through the Bolan Pass, and its merchants had dealings with many towns in Central Asia. Garhi Yasin taluka comprises main towns of Madeji and Dakhan beside Garhi Yasin town itself. The town is named after its founder Yasin Khan Pathan. Sindhi is the common language of the people in this region. The population of the town is, mainly, comprised of Pathan, Memon, Soomra, Shaikh, Syed, Mirani, Qazi, Bhutta, Abra, Channa, Lashari, Bhatti, Dinari, Mahar, Kakepota, Brohi and other tribes. Beside a large number of Hindu, Punjabi and some Muhajirs (from India)

also reside in the town. The people live here without any discrimination of cast, color, language and religion. The fame of Garhi Yasin region is the personalities who earned great names in their respective fields. The renowned lawyer A. K. Brohi; the two ex-speakers of Sindh provincial assembly Agha Badar Alam Durrani and Agha Sadruddin Durrani; the great religious scholar and a leader of independence movement Moulana Taj Muhammad Amroti; the famous authors and journalists Ali Ahmed Brohi, Moulana Din Muhammad Wafai and Karim Bux 'Khalid'; all belonged to this area. Garhi Yasin has always been given importance by all civil and military governments of Pakistan. The political representatives from here has always been given important portfolios in successive provincial and federal governments. Ghous Bux Khan Mahar, Railway Minister in the present federal cabinet, is the MNA from Garhi Yasin. Agha Siraj Khan Durrani ex-provincial minister also hails from this town. Agha Atta Muhammad Khan, Moula Bux Soomro (father of ex-speaker of national assembly), Nadir Hussain Khan Kamario are among the other elected representatives from here who were awarded important portfolios in the exgovernments. Other prominent personalities who had great achievements in various fields include Moulana Muhammad Shah Amroti, Moulvi Muhammad Hashim, Moulvi Muhammad Ibrahim, Agha Mumtaz Khan Durrani, Hafiz Noor Mohd. Prominent persons of the present include Capt. Usman Essani, Rasool Bux Baloch, Agha Imtiaz Khan Barakzai, Agha Rafiq Ahmed Durrani,

Education: The town has a Higher Secondary School and Three High Schools, Several Primary Schools, a Mono Technique School and number of Vocational Schools (such as Typing, Commercial, Computer etc). Agriculture: A considerable part of the area is irrigated. Major productions of the area are Rice, Wheat and pulses beside Maize, sugarcane, vegetables fruits etc. Industry: It has a small market and manufactures of handicrafts, metal ware, furniture, bricks and pottery. Handloom weaving of the area used to be very popular. The Land: It is chiefly alluvial plain. The lands are greatly suffered after construction of barrage at sukkur and being rapidly converted into salt lands

(Kalar). The climate is hot, dry and enervating. News Publications: PEGAM newspaper used to be published from Garhi Yasin in 1936.
