Editor’s Preface The skills to prepare the “Topical Sermon” have been mostly forgotten or, in some cases, lost to the teachers and preachers of this day. There seems to be quite a bit of misunderstanding on this vital subject among Christians today. Why this is the case is not clear except for the fact that the Devil has confused the minds of so many. The consequence is that souls go through life without a clear witness, under the condition of authentic preaching, of the Grace of GOD to save sinners. “Authentic Preaching” would be in the style of that delivered in the characteristic example of those found in the Bible. The preached ministry has become a “spiritual battlefield” of hand to hand combat. This battle, for the Christian, is not with “flesh and blood” – but there are powers at work that include the condemnation of souls for which CHRIST died and can save if these souls can hear the life giving words of spiritual vitality from a preacher... (Rom.10:13-14 “...how shall they hear without a preacher?”). There are three basic ways (Sermon/Lesson Styles) to deliver the message. There is the Expository Sermon (“So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.” Neh. 8:8). This style of sermon is the most effective method but requires great hermeneutic as well as homiletic skills. Expositional preaching/teaching enjoys the promise of God to the one who handles the Word (“So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” Isa. 55:11) because it occupies the hearer so fully with the Word. Then there is the most loved style of preaching – the Textual Sermon. This style of sermon must be seasoned with wisdom in order to make the proper application of the text to a major theme. The development of the theme of the text depends on exposition and topical study but is limited to the practical application of the text. Textual preaching/teaching enjoys the blessing of the use of scripture and is flexible enough to allow the needed concentration of the specific theme. But the most often used style is the Topical Sermon. This style of preaching/teaching may combine elements of the other two but focuses on the topic from its several perspectives. Topical sermons enjoy the broad latitude to explore and display the chosen topic through the medium of the entire Scripture. With the topic (subject, issue or theme) as the focus, the topical sermon gives many advantages, least of all being the fact that less hermeneutic skill and homiletic accomplishment can net great results. More preaching is attempted with this style than the other two put together. The clear remark of Scripture is that preaching is a very important part of the ministry of the House of GOD. Every local church’s purpose in the world includes this great work of preaching. The local church is to provide for the meetings and promote occasions to carry out the work of preaching. Old Testament as well as New Testament proof can be had upon the matter. – The prophet of the “Flood” was said to be a “Preacher of Righteousness” (2 Peter 2:5). – Nehemiah preached from the wall of the city (Neh. 6:2-3). – The King, David, was a preacher of righteousness (Psa. 40:9). – The King, Solomon, was the preacher of Ecclesiastes (Eccl. 1:1, 12). – Jonah was told to preach to Nineveh (Jonah 3:2). – In the New Testament we also find John the Baptist as he performs the ministry of GOD’S bidding (Matt. 3:1; Luke 3:3). – Peter preached on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:14).

My friend, just think, if you will, how hungry many people are for the truth, and then think of what they are fed. They ask for an egg and the American Pulpit gives them a stone; they ask for a fish and this liberal day gives them a serpent! One of the reasons our faith is being shaken is the condition of the American Pulpit. This place of separation has been polluted by men without morals who tell likewise others how to escape morality. I find this quotation from Dr. R.G. Lee in his powerful book, “Pathways For Preachers”: “Today black snow falls! The Fever of life's fierce heat burns the divine dew off the grass! Spiritual mercury falls low! Critical Philistines of transcendent cleverness subject the warm wonder of Christianity to cool analysis! Fat deformities ask the world to substitute Christianity's bread for a chunk of cloud bank buttered with the night wind, and our unregenerate humanity is set in the midst of palaces, art, philosophies, and scientific wonders, but remains a bedraggled beggar still---while many Christians are frostbitten in realms of luxury. So the Gospel is our superlative, our supreme inspiration.” It is preaching that struck the Gospel onto the coin of the Earth with the apostles. It was preaching that brought the princes and peasants alike to the cross. The years of the “dark ages” were clouded with darkness but the light never died through the preaching of many like the Waldenses of Europe. The Reformation came to pass as a result of preaching. The great awakening came to America with the voice of a preacher named George Whitfield In the past two hundred years we can see America's shape formed in response to preaching. (Charles Finney, D.L.Moody, R.A. Torrey, Wilber Chapman, Billy Sunday, J. Frank Norris etc.) It has only been in recent days that preaching has been so lightly taken. Before you start to point fingers at the outside let me first say that I fear the ministry of preaching has problems from within. There is a deepening apostasy from “...the faith once delivered to the saints...” (Jude 3) Preaching, at its best, is expounding eternal truths to those who desire such. If few desire truth, preaching will surely suffer. And for this very reason preaching is on a low slot of interest. Worldliness will always soften the impact of preaching. Today we are under the control of the flesh and pleasure like never before; therefore preaching (a spiritual endeavor) is subjugated to the needs and whims of the flesh. Then, lastly there is the subject of the Gospel Preacher himself. Most spend so little time in prayer for the message that no clear direction is found. Most preachers are faced with a list of personal and ecclesiastical needs so demanding that time is consumed in the pursuit of these to the lose of the pulpit. And most are so spiritually dull until the sharp aptitude for homiletics placed in him by the “call to preach” is blunted to a useless edge. A sad day is come when preachers do not preach. Introduction This booklet is offered to aid the preacher/teacher in the study and preparation for Topical Preaching and Teaching. The Thompson’s Chain-reference Bible may be the most effective aid for this style of work. This adapted edition of “Thompson’s Special Bible Readings” is being offered in this edited form to give the reader a functional method for Topical Bible Study. The “Topical” method is the most rewarding method because this method will give answers to questions. Bible readers have many questions. The Topical references given in the center column of many Bibles is a great aid to study. I have used this method throughout my Spiritual life and have grown by it. My preaching is always arranged around this type of study – My personal needs are meet through this means of Bible Study – My work to minister the Gospel in the public, on a personal level and in counseling is through the Topical method of study. We must do a better job of Bible study. This will call for each reader to maximize the time we spend on Bible study. It is hoped that this booklet will lead to this goal in the life of all that use it. The service rendered by this short booklet will be seen in the years yet to come. If you will make this easy plan your method it will be found that rewards will come. Dr. Terry Wayne Preslar (1947- ) Dr. Terry Wayne Preslar has pastored First Baptist Church of Mineral Springs, North Carolina for over 30 years. It is his second call with two and one half years having been served at Howie Baptist Church of Waxhaw, North Carolina. Brother Preslar and his wife are happily married with five children, with the youngest being eighteen years old and eight grandchildren. He is an old fashion Baptist Preacher with firm convictions and a passion for souls. The Editor organized Mineral Springs Baptist Mission late in 1975. Since then Pastor Preslar has worked in this calling. He works with the “Preaching Mission” of the church, at the rest-home several times each month and three services each week in the pulpit at First Baptist. Given the occasion he preaches on the street and in prisons. He teaches Bible College Classes in Monroe in the Gospel Schools of the Bible in Monroe N.C. and writes Sunday-School material for several classes. He preaches several revival meetings, speaks in mission revivals and Bible conferences and attends a number of campmeetings each year.
