Future The future tense is used primarily to refer to what will happen in the future. It is also used to express probability in the present.

Forms: Regular The endings for -ar, -er and -ir verbs are all the same for the future tense: Future tense endings for –ar, -er, and –ir verbs -é -emos -ás -éis -á -án To conjugate verbs in the future tense: 1. Take the infinitive verb. orar

2. Add the future tense ending that agrees with the subject. oraré oraremos orarás oraréis orará orarán

Notice that the future endings are added directly to the infinitive. Do not drop the infinitive -ar, -er, -ir ending before adding the future ending. Also, note that all of the endings have an accent except the nosotros form (-emos). Examples Estudiaré las Escrituras cada día.

Sentiremos el Espíritu.

I will study the scriptures every day.

We will feel the Spirit.

Aprenderás la verdad de Dios.

Pedid y recibiréis.

You will learn God’s truth.

The phrase ir + a + infinitive often replaces the future tense. Example: Enseñaré (I will teach.)  Voy a enseñar. (I am going to teach.)

Forms: Irregular With irregular verbs, you must make a change to the stem before adding the future tense ending. There are three kinds of stem changes in the future tense: •

Drop the Vowel from the Infinitive Ending. Use a Shortened Form of the Infinitive. decir (dir–) diré, dirás, dirá, diremos, diréis, dirán hacer (har–) haré, harás, hará, haremos, haréis, harán Verbs derived from or containing an irregular verb in the future tense (like hacer, poner, tener, and venir) will follow the same pattern as the form shown above. Examples tener  tendré obtener  obtendré

hacer  haré deshacer  desharé

Exception : Verbs containing decir follow the same rules as regular verbs. Example bendecir  bendeciré Note that the irregulars in the future are the same as the irregulars in the conditional.

Using the Future To Speculate Spanish speakers often use the future tense to speculate or wonder what is happening at the present. When it is clear that a speaker is referring to the present but the future tense is used, it implies uncertainty or probability. Examples Los misioneros estarán en la capilla. The missionaries are probably in the chapel.

Su hermana tendrá 12 años. His sister is probably 12 years old.

¿Quién será? (after someone knocks on the door) Who could that be?

¿Qué estarán haciendo? I wonder what they’re doing?

Many English speakers have a tendency of not identifying irregular verbs properly, therefore they use the same criteria for regular verb conjugations in the future tense but applied to irregular verbs. This means that they will add the same endings for both regular and irregular verbs.
