Outline proposals for HTA Clinical Trials In an exciting period of expansion for the National Institute for Health Research Health Technology Assessment (NIHR HTA) programme we are inviting research proposals for the latest pragmatic clinical trials funding round. Researchers are invited to submit outline proposals for primary research (which generate new data) to assess the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of health technologies in, or likely to be in, NHS practice. We intend to consider applications four times a year from 2009 onwards and there will be cut-off deadlines for proposals to reach our offices for the assessment process. Outline proposals for primary research are invited for initial consideration of importance to the NHS by the HTA programme's Clinical Trials Group in December 2008. Applications in the field of mental health would be particularly welcome for our next deadline, in areas not already well covered by our portfolio. Proposals must reach the NCCHTA offices before 1pm on Tuesday 21st October 2008 to be considered in December and then on to the April 2009 Clinical Trials Board for shortlisting in the first instance. Applicants short-listed by the Clinical Trials Board in April will be invited to submit full proposals to the Clinical Trials Board in October 2009. The outline proposal application form, commissioning brief and guidance notes are available on the HTA programme website at
www.hta.ac.uk/funding/clinicaltrials/?src=ct06 or contact: HTA Clinical Trials team, NCCHTA, Alpha House, Enterprise Road, Southampton Science Park, Chilworth, Southampton SO16 7NS . Burdett Trust for Nursing Grants The Burdett Trust for Nursing provides a number of grants every year. All applications must be focussed explicitly on improving care for patients and users of services. Projects invariably will be led by a registered member of one of the nursing or midwifery professions, but may include multi-professional or team-working interventions. These interventions could involve clinical care, social care, leadership, education and research. Applications should fit into one of the following six categories: a) Care and support of people in the community b) Care and support of people in hospital c) Clinical Governance including risk assessment/management d) Public Health nursing e) Multi professional working f) Nursing leadership for improved patient care The Trustees make the grants in three categories: Level One Grant (£10,000 - £50,000) Applicants are asked to fill in the online application form (http://www.burdettnursingtrustapply.org.uk/init.pl). There is no closing date in operation. Applications are received and assessed continually during the year and the Trust aims to process grants within four months of receipt. Level Two Grant (over £50,000) Applicants are asked to fill in the online application form (http://www.burdettnursingtrustapply.org.uk/init.pl). Applications are received and assessed continually during the year and the Trust aims to process grants within six months. http://www.britac.ac.uk/funding/guide/srg.html Small Research Grants Grants are available to support primary research in the humanities and social sciences. The first recourse for funding should be to your own institution (where applicable). Applications will not be considered for less than £500. The maximum grant is £7,500 over two years. Applications for collaborative or individual projects are equally welcome under this scheme. Applications from international groups of scholars are welcome, provided there is a UK-based scholar as lead applicant. Funds are available to facilitate initial project planning and development; to support the direct costs of research; and to enable the advancement of research through workshops, or visits by or to partner scholars. Applicants may seek support for any combination of eligible activity and cost up to the overall limit of £7,500. The Academy will assess applications equally on their merits, with no preference as to mode of enquiry. All applications should demonstrate that Academy funds are sought for a clearly defined, discrete piece of research, which will have an identifiable outcome on completion of the Academy-funded component of the research. Level of award: up to £7,500. Period of award: grants are tenable for up to 24 months. Further information: Currently being updated Closing dates: 15 October, 15 January, 15 April. Results will be issued approximately three months after the closing date. Method of application: on the Small Research Grant application form.
