Harvard for Entrance in Fall 2008 | Application Materials
Thank you for your interest in Harvard College. We know there are many fine colleges and universities to choose from, and we are happy that you are looking closely at the exciting opportunities available here in Cambridge.
Our admissions procedures are designed to give you maximum freedom and flexibility to present yourself in your own words. We hope you will respond in whatever ways you feel will best demonstrate your interests and accomplishments. Here are some recommendations we hope you will consider as you complete your application. Please note our new application timetable:
IMMEDIATELY Please send: • The Common Application or the Universal College Application • The $65.00 application fee or a fee waiver request Without your Common Application/Universal Application, we cannot open your admission file, track supporting documents for your application, or send your name to our alumni/ae for a possible interview in your area. The Short Answer about one of your activities, the Personal Essay and the Harvard Application Supplement may be sent at a later date. DECEMBER 1 We will begin our careful evaluation process on this date, reading applications in the order in which they are completed. Our alumni/ae interviewers will appreciate your sending at least the Common Application/Universal Application by this date to allow them to begin the interviewing process in areas where this is possible. We recognize that you and your secondary school teachers and counselors have many commitments that may preclude December 1 submission of your admission materials. If so, please be assured that you will not be penalized in any way.
The answers to many questions about admissions requirements and deadlines are included on the following pages. For an expanded list of frequently asked questions and their answers, please consult the FAQ index on our website at www.admissions.college.harvard.edu. Each admission decision is made without consideration of a candidate’s financial need—a policy we call “need-blind” admission. Indeed, the Admissions Committee may respond favorably to evidence that a candidate has overcome significant obstacles, financial or otherwise. Once an applicant is admitted, we create an individual financial aid package to enable a family to meet the cost of attendance. It is a high priority for us to provide financial access to Harvard for every admitted student. We hope you will take every opportunity to explore whether Harvard might be a good match for your academic, extracurricular, and personal interests. Advice from your college counselor, your family, and the many publications on college admission may help. So might a visit to Cambridge or a conversation with one of our more than 9,000 alumni/ae who help us with admissions recruitment in all 50 states and around the world. Please let us know if we can be of assistance to you during the admissions process. Best wishes for a happy and productive year.
JANUARY 1 Final deadline for application materials. Candidates can complete testing (SAT or ACT and three SAT Subject Tests) by using the January SAT or February ACT dates, but we hope that you will have your testing completed by the December date.
William R. Fitzsimmons Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid
We no longer have an Eary Admission program. Please refer to the next page for an explanation. Keep copies of all materials submitted and ask your teachers to do the same. Materials can be lost in the mail. Supplementary materials or portfolios may be submitted, but you should do so only if you have unusual talent. Such materials are neither required nor expected since the required components of the application provide ample basis on which to make our decisions. Because we cannot return such materials, applicants should send only duplicates. Write about what matters to you. There is no single “right” essay topic or a “right” answer.

A Statement on Early Admission
Harvard College has eliminated its early admission program and has moved to a single application deadline of January 1. The change in policy, which builds on Harvard's efforts over the past several years to expand financial aid and increase openness in admissions, takes effect for students applying in the fall of 2007 for the freshman class entering in September 2008. “ The college admissions process has become too pressured, too complex, and too vulnerable to public cynicism,” said Harvard interim President Derek Bok. “We hope that doing away with early admission will improve the process and make it simpler and fairer.” “ Early admission programs tend to advantage the advantaged,” Bok continued. "Students from more sophisticated backgrounds and affluent high schools often apply early to increase their chances of admission, while minority students and students from rural areas, other countries, and high schools with fewer resources miss out. Students needing financial aid are disadvantaged by binding early decision programs that prevent them from comparing aid packages. Others who apply early and gain admission to the college of their choice have less reason to work hard at their studies during their final year of high school." “ I am delighted that President Bok and the Corporation have determined that we are in a position to take this excellent step,” said Jeremy R. Knowles, interim Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. “ The frenzy that surrounds college admissions threatens important educational values, and early admission programs are part of the problem. These programs distort the high school experience by forcing both students and colleges to commit prematurely, based only upon the record at the end of the student's junior year. Moreover, students who are admitted early receive what often appears to be a 'free pass' for their second semester, sadly encouraging them to disengage from their academic experience.”
3
“ I hope that our decision to eliminate early action will help to turn down the heat on admissions, allowing students, parents, and teachers to continue to focus their energies on the joys and rigors of education itself,” Knowles continued Beginning in the fall of 2007, the application deadline for all applicants will be January 1. Harvard will maintain its current April 1 notification to students, and May 1, the national common reply date, as its deadline for receiving responses from students. Students who have been admitted under an Early Decision program at another college must withdraw any pending application to Harvard and are not eligible for admission. Harvard intends to use the time and capacity freed up by the move to a single admissions cycle to focus more energetically on outreach and recruiting. The admissions staff will travel more widely to make presentations in key cities and other areas to educate students, families, and college counselors about Harvard and the college admissions process more generally. The University will also work with secondary schools in a renewed effort to make applying to college less complicated and less stressful than it is today. This effort is particularly important in light of disparities in access to, and the quality of, college counseling. The average ratio of students to college counselors in the United States is 500/1. In some states, such as California, the ratio is 1000/1, and many high schools have eliminated college counseling altogether. Harvard hopes and expects that the move away from early admission will sharpen the focus of the admissions process on its most important goal—helping students find the right college match.

You may also pay your processing fee online with a credit card at www.fas.harvard.edu/~appfee/payment_form.cgi.
Common Application and Universal Application Harvard now accepts the Common Application and the Universal College Application. Both will be treated equally by the Admissions Committee. Please choose one. You may choose to send your Personal Statement and Short Answer on a separate piece of paper. If you do so, please write your name, address, birthdate, and high school on each page. Please avoid submitting materials in binders or folders or submitting any of the pieces of your materials together. Paper clips may be used, if necessary. If you do not receive acknowledgement of your application four weeks after you submitted it, please call our office at (617) 495-1551. This is very important, because applications can get lost in the mail.

The Mid-Year School Report should be returned in February 2008 with your latest grades. Harvard for Entrance in Fall 2008 | Application Materials
All Financial Aid Applicants The deadline for financial applications is February 1, 2008. If you need financial assistance, file the 2007-8 PROFILE with the College Scholarship Service (CSS) and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Harvard’s CSS code is 3434 and FAFSA code is E00468 All financial aid applicants who are not citizens or permanent residents of the US or Canada must submit Harvard’s Financial Statement for Students from Foreign Countries instead of the PROFILE and FAFSA. For more information, please see pages 44-46 in the Admissions prospectus or the Financial Aid Office’s website www.fao.fas.harvard.edu.
Applicants Outside the United States If you are applying from a school outside the United States, please follow the same procedures and timetables as candidates applying from schools within the US. There are, however, a few variations specific to students applying from abroad Testing Requirements Even if you are submitting the results of your school leaving exams (e.g., GCE A-levels, International Baccalaureate, etc.), you must submit the results of the SAT Reasoning Test or ACT (with Writing, if available), as well as three SAT Subject Tests. These tests must be completed by the appropriate deadlines. If you do not have access to a testing center, we will consider other internationally recognized credentials, such as the results of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and/or TOEFL.
Applicants Not Applying for Financial Aid All applicants who are not US citizens or US Permanent Residents and who are NOT applying for financial aid must complete Section B and Section C of the Financial Statement for Foreign Students. Admitted students CANNOT be sent their immigration paperwork (the I-20 form) until this form has been received by the Admissions and Financial Aid Office. Admissions forms, including the Financial Statement for Students from Foreign Countries, are available on our website www.admissions.college.harvard.edu.
Translations We appreciate the effort that many applicants make in providing the Admissions Committee with a translation of the recommendations submitted on their behalf. We ask, however, that any translations include the name of the translator and that the original, untranslated reports be submitted as well.
Supplementary Materials If you submit supplementary materials or materials separate from the application forms, please write your full name and secondary school on all supplementary materials and underline your family name. DO NOT submit any of your application materials in binders or folders.
SAT Subject Tests A candidate whose first language is not English should not take the SAT Subject Test in his or her native language as one of the three required SAT Subject Tests.
Application Fee We ask that international applicants send us the $65 application fee in the form of a foreign draft—that is, a check in US dollars that is drawn through a US bank, but is generally available at most foreign banks. You may pay by credit card online at www.fas.harvard.edu/~appfee/ payment_form.cgi. You may also wire the fee to us using the following information:
TOEFL Students are not required to take the TOEFL unless they do not have access to other standardized tests.
Bank name: Bank of America ABA number: 011000 390 Account number: 00531-37234 Attention: College Admissions, 5-8821
Interviews When and where possible, we encourage international applicants to have an admissions interview. Our interviewers abroad are normally graduates of Harvard College who offer their assistance on a volunteer basis. Applicants in Canada and the United Kingdom will be contacted directly by an alumnus/a if such an interview is possible. While we try to make interviews widely available everywhere, it will not always be possible to do so. In many countries, applicants are asked to initiate contact with an interviewer. In some countries, however, the number of applicants may be too great for all to be interviewed. In this case, applicants will be contacted directly if the Admissions Committee requires more information. No candidate is at a disadvantage if an interview cannot be arranged. A list of interviewers abroad is mailed with the application booklet. Please refer to this list to find out the interviewing procedure in the country from which you are applying. If you downloaded the application, applied online, or otherwise did not receive this list, please be sure to see our website www.admissions.college.harvard.edu for information on interviews abroad.

OPTIONAL
Nothing in this section is either expected or required. We simply want to be certain you have every opportunity to tell us about yourself.
Supplementary materials
The required components of the application to Harvard provide an ample basis on which to make our admission decisions. However, students with very exceptional talents or achievements may send music recordings, slides of artwork, or selected samples of academic work for us to consider as part of their application files. At the discretion of the Admissions Committee, submissions may be evaluated by faculty. Supplementary materials are neither required nor expected—and should be sent only if the applicant’s work is unusually advanced. Because we cannot return such materials, applicants should send only duplicates. Check here if you are planning to send supplementary materials to be evaluated as part of your application. Please send all supplementary materials to the Admissions Office so that they can be properly labeled and included in your file. DO NOT submit materials directly to academic departments. If you are submitting research materials for review, please include a short statement putting the research project into the context of your academic interests and future plans.
Music tape or CD* Instrument: .........................................................................
Slides of artwork Media: .........................................................................
Other (Explain): .........................................................................
*please note that CD format is preferred, but tapes will still be evaluated. Do not send video recordings of musical performances or recitals
Additional Essays
Occasionally, students feel that college application forms do not provide a sufficient opportunity to convey important information about themselves or their accomplishments. If there is something you would like us to know, please inform us in the essay section at the end of the document. If you wish to include an additional essay, you may do so. Possible Topics: Unusual circumstances in your life
An academic experience (course, project, paper, or research topic) that has meant the most to you
Travel or living experiences in other countries
A list of the books you have read during the past twelve months
Books that have affected you the most
PLEASE NOTE
Students admitted under an Early Decision program at another college must withdraw any pending application to Harvard and are not eligible for admission. If you have attended more than one high school in the last two years, you should have an additional School Report from the Common Application/Universal College Application submitted by your former counselor(s).
I certify that the information presented in my application is accurate, complete, and honestly presented. I also certify that, to the best of my knowledge, any information submitted on my behalf, including letters of recommendation, is authentic. I understand and agree that any intentionally inaccurate information, misleading information, or omission will, if discovered at a later date, be cause for recision of any offer of admission, or for discipline, including termination of my status as a student and revocation of course credit, course grades, and degree.

Harvard for Entrance in Fall 2008 | School Report Part II Office of Admissions and Financial Aid 86 Brattle Street Cambridge, Massachusetts 02138
Please return this form by January 1.
To Counselor or School Head: We have provided this supplement to the Common Application School Report to give secondary schools the opportunity to offer further information about their students. You may have already provided this information in your report; we are happy to accept letters or photocopied reports and ask only that you staple them to this form. We recognize that not all parts of this form apply equally to all schools, and we understand that many counselors face extraordinarily demanding workloads. We are extremely grateful for your help in assisting students in the transition from secondary school to college. Representatives of schools outside the U.S. and Canada should refer to additional notes and directions provided on the back page of this form. The purpose of this recommendation is to assist the Admissions Committee in making a decision and, if the applicant enrolls, to aid in making rooming assignments and to assist the student in other ways. Because inadequate information can sometimes diminish a student’s chances for admission, a full and candid report is essential. We ask, therefore, for careful ratings and comments about character and ability by a school official who knows the student well. Your report will be read thoroughly by admissions officers and later reviewed by the Admissions Committee as it votes on the student’s case. The Transcript
You may send us any legible transcript form or academic record that your school currently uses. A school profile, including a brief explanation of your grading system, would be especially welcome. The transcript should provide at least the following information: Courses taken, years taken, and grades, including courses failed or repeated Courses currently in progress Indication of honors, accelerated, and Advanced Placement courses (if applicable) Test results, such as SAT Reasoning Test, SAT Subject Tests (or previous versions), ACT, AP, IB, and PSAT
Schools abroad are asked to submit results or predicted results from their examinations, such as the Abitur, I.B., and GCE A-Levels. Numerical Rank in Class
We understand that some schools, as a matter of policy, do not rank their students. However, the Committee feels that it must have some indication of how the student has performed relative to classmates in order to reach a good decision. We appreciate your cooperation in noting class size and class rank as nearly as possible. (If precise rank is not available, please estimate decile or give some other indication.) Financial Aid
If the candidate is a United States citizen or permanent resident and a financial aid applicant, please direct him or her to immediately apply for federal financial aid, including the Pell Grant and for state awards to which the student is entitled if he or she meets the criteria outlined by the participating states (i.e. Connecticut, District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont).
Disciplinary Actions and Voluntary Leaves

If in the past three years the student has incurred serious or repeated disciplinary action or has ever been dismissed, suspended, or separated from school, or placed on probation, or has ever been away from school for a period of more than two weeks, including a leave of absence, other than for school vacations or due to illness, please check yes above and explain on a separate sheet. (Please note that we ask the same question of the student and need your confirmation and explanation of any such circumstance.) If, after you have submitted this form, new circumstances alter the student’s status at school, you should notify us as soon as possible.

Harvard for Entrance in Fall 2008 | Financial Aid Instructions
The following materials are needed to apply for all financial aid funds administered by the Committee on Financial Aid. Please note the deadlines below. All applicants will need to submit final 2007 tax return information by March 1, 2008 in order to receive an award in April. Late submission of tax forms will ordinarily result in later award notification. An application for financial aid will in no way jeopardize your chances for admission; however, late applications for aid cannot be assured of full consideration in time for the admissions reply deadline. Should your financial situation change, and you no longer wish to be considered for financial aid, please notify us in writing. Please keep photocopies of all materials for your own records.
For instructions for Foreign Citizens (excluding Canadian Citizens), please see the next page. All forms described below should be filed as soon as possible but no later than March 1, 2008.
US and Canadian Citizens / US Permanent Residents Only - Deadline February 1, 2008 CSS PROFILE Application
Complete the 2008–2009 PROFILE online at www.collegeboard.com. Designate Harvard as one of the recipients by using our CSS Code of 3434. (If your parents are separated or divorced, use information from your custodial parent.) Print a copy for your own reference.
