Moves to tackle violence on troubled strip By Lauren Farrow
In an effort to curb homophobic violence on and around Oxford Street on Friday and Saturday nights, the AIDS Council of NSW (ACON) has opened a new Safe Place to offer protection for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community. The Safe Place will also be used to gather accurate information about what is happening on the late-night strip. According to local police and ACON, the area was facing continual problems with the way homophobic violence was being reported, recorded and dealt with. “We wanted the Safe Place to be a visible marker of the problems our community is facing on Oxford Street,” ACON President Adrian Lovney said. “There have also been problems with data. The data the police have doesn’t match the anecdotal evidence we have,” he said. According to ACON, 62 reports were made to the service about violence on and around Oxford Street between July 1 last year and June 30 this year.
