Education is “Central”

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

“Good things happening at Central”

Staff Information At this time, round one of the Board’s staffing process has been completed. Mr. John Peterson will be leaving our school and I wish to take this opportunity to thank him for his contributions and years of service here at Dundas Central. We wish him the best in his new position next year. I would like to thank Miss Terri Dunnett for her energy, contributions and efforts since she took over for Mr. Petersen in January. Unfortunately, Miss Dunnett can not apply for his position as she is on the occasional list and only permanent or probationary teachers may apply. We wish her the best in what should be a promising teaching career. Lastly, we also wish Ms. Leslie Brown “all the best” as she moves into her new position. Ms. Brown was selected as one of fourteen teachers who will serve as a Math Facilitator to a number of schools in the Board. We are pleased to “welcome aboard” Mrs. Swartz to our staff. She will be teaching grade six along with grade seven and eight science. She has taught previously at Gordon Price and Dundas District schools and is looking forward to joining us. The staffing process will continue into the summer months. Round two of teacher postings and interviews will commence over the next three weeks. After that has been completed, the Board’s Placement Committee may place teachers in vacancies within schools. After the committee has completed the placements and school’s still have vacancies, a new teacher may be hired. As outlined in previous correspondence, over the summer staffing could change due to personal moves, resignations, retirements, illness, system staffing needs or leaves of absence. Tentative teacher assignments will be outlined in an update before the end of June. Class Lists As outlined in the April newsletter, grade teams will spend a tremendous amount of time creating classes for next year. They must consider female / male ratios, balancing students of different academic and leadership abilities, which teacher suits a student’s learning profile, who needs to be together, who should be separated, who has been in a split class (or who can handle it) and even the instruments they play. We will be posting class lists just outside the office the last week in August just before Labour Day. Staff will meet students on the first day outside prior to the commencement of school and inform them what class they will be in. I cannot promise who will be your child’s teacher at this point. Too many factors such as those staffing issues listed above, along with students moving in and out of our school community may also cause us to re-adjust class lists. Parental requests for teachers, classes or classmates will be considered only if they are of “substantial merit” and in writing to Mr. Morlog. Even then, they will be taken “under advisement”. No promises will be provided. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we work through the process. Looking for Kindergarten Students Currently our numbers are low in Kindergarten, particularly Junior Kindergarten. We are not sure if we will be experiencing an enrollment decline or parents have not yet registered their children. If you know of anyone wishing to attend our school in September, please inform them to contact our office or come in to register their child. We are contacting local day care facilities to pass on this information to their communities. EQAO Testing As we move into the first week of June our grade three students are wrapping up their testing and the grade six students are working through this assessment of student achievement. We wish our students all the best and we are confident they will represent our school well. Although we tend to play down the Ministry’s and media’s importance and attention to the testing, it does provide a “snapshot” of student performance standards. The results of this assessment give us some indication how well our students have grasped the provincial outcomes and assist our staff to uncover what we do well and what areas require attention. Over the years, the process has assisted in developing consistency and continuity in program content, instruction, assignments and assessment. Results from the EQAO testing will be released in the Fall.

Home & School News It's hard to believe that summer is just around the corner! I would like to thank all of the dear parents and staff who gave their time, energy and support to make this school year great. Many thanks to organizers Jane Lindsay and Denise Montgomery and all the volunteers of our 2nd annual Plant Sale on May 7th. And thanks to everyone (notably Jane Lindsay again!) who contributed to make the Staff Appreciation Lunch on May 13th such a yummy, warm and fuzzy event. Our final H&S event will be the End of Year Picnic on Thursday, June 18th from 5:00 to 7:30 pm - RAIN or SHINE! Many hands are needed to make this super fun event a reality, so please offer to lend a hand. We will try to get a sign-up sheet on the website shortly. Our next H&S meeting is on Wednesday, June 3rd from 7:00 - 8:30 pm. Childcare will be available. Hope to see you there! Our purpose is to promote an excellent educational experience for our children. We are seeking volunteers for next year’s School Council. If you are interested, please join us at our next meeting – Tuesday June 9, 2009 @ 7 pm in the staff room.
