5E Lesson Plan Template* Ray Leone Your Name Lesson Subject Area

7th grade science (45 mins)

Specific Topic

Force and Motion

Appropriate Standards being addressed

PA S8.C.3.1.1 Describe forces acting on objects (e.g., friction, gravity, balanced versus unbalanced).

Instructional Objectives (Bloom Level) Minimum of three

At the end of this lesson the students will be able to: 1. Illustrate the forces acting on an object using a free body diagram 2. Compare the forces acting on an object when net force is balanced to when the forces are unbalanced 3. Calculate the net force acted on an object • Students go to Rocket Sledder Interactive • Choose your settings on the interactive • Draw and label the forces acting on the sled based on what you see on the screen – include the amount of Newtons • Compare your drawing to the person next to you • Two students come up to put their drawing on the SMARTboard • Did people do different things in their drawings?

ENGAGE (10 mins) Activities

EXPLORE (10 mins) Activities

• • • EXPLAIN (10 mins) Activities

Students are given the description of 4 objects that they have encountered today. ◦ A bus breaking, a computer on a desk, walking at a constant speed to your next class, and a pencil falling straight down from your desk Students work in pairs, each picking two object each and draw the objects and the forces acting on them Share with your partner what you came up with Share with the class Introduction to Free body diagrams ◦ They are how we represent the forces acting on on

object Look at the examples that we came up with ◦ How would we draw them? ▪ Include arrows in the direction of the force ▪ We can use longer arrows to indicate a larger force and shorter arrows to indicate a smaller force. ▪ Remember: label the amount of force using Newtons ◦ Are the forces balanced or unbalanced? How can we tell? ◦ Remember: Include Applied force, Gravitational, Normal force, Friction and Air resistance (if necessary)

Give students 3 free body diagrams • In pairs, calculate the net force, decide if the forces are balanced. • Share out • Students given two examples of an object at rest or in motion ◦ Draw the free body diagram, calculate the net force and determine if the object is being acted upon by balanced or unbalanced forces Rocket Sledder Interactive • Chromebooks to get to simulation • Notebooks to draw free body diagrams and take notes • Smartboard to show simulation and allow students to come up and show work Free body diagram practice
