Narrator and Characters Chapter 23-Ending Letters NARRATOR: In chapter 23, the book is narrated from the perspective of Victor on his wedding night when the monster proceeds to kill Elizabeth and Victor decides to devote his life in searching for the monster. It is while in this quest that he goes to the Arctic, and right as he seems about to perish, Victor sees the ship of Robert Walton. Then the narration is taken over by Walton on page 199. Walton says how he feels and respects Victor as a man who is very learned and has been through much. Then after Victor dies, the monster comes back to his deathbed and talks to Walton. We see the monster narrate for the final time saying how he really isn’t bad. Then he leaves and promises not to cause harm again while Walton finishes off the story in his letters to his sister. CHARACTERS: Victor: When the monster kills his wife on their wedding night, he vows to search for the monster and kill him as his sole purpose Monster: Kills Elizabeth, and runs to Artic to elude Victor. Finally in the final dialogue with Walton we hear how he feels about Victor albeit his selfishness prior Walton: He respects Victor and truly wants his companionship, but realizes his life is fading as he is detailing this story. This is the parallel between Walton and Victor and the monster; they are all looking for companionship, but none of them truly ever get it.
