Forefront Client Security Sales Guide For Microsoft Partners

Executive Summary IT professionals face a formidable challenge in protecting their desktops, laptops, and server operating systems from viruses, spyware, and other threats. At the same time, many client security solutions are not fully addressing customer needs. Security dashboards can provide too little information or are difficult to use, making it challenging to get critical visibility into threats and vulnerabilities. Security administrators face other problems: lack of integration into the existing infrastructure, client software stability, slowdowns during pre-scheduled scans, and support. Microsoft Forefront Client Security provides unified virus and spyware protection for business desktops, laptops and server operating systems that is easy to manage and control. Forefront Client Security is a part of Microsoft® Forefront™ comprehensive line of business security products. This guide provides information on the customer challenges; the core benefits of FCS; the competitive products; how to win accounts and on how to handle key questions around scalability, pricing, availability, and other areas.

Customer Challenges and Concerns Viruses, worms, phishing attacks, blended threats, and day-zero exploits are increasing in sophistication, speed, and frequency. In a recent Forrester survey of technology decision-makers about IT security risks, 73% of firms rated viruses and worms as their top concern. Even though virtually every business (97%) had antivirus and firewall protection in 2006, almost 7 in 10 firms experienced virus infections (CSI/FBI 2006 Survey). Gartner has also estimated that 20-40% of help desk calls are related to spyware. The increasing complexity of securing and managing desktops, laptops, and servers against a broad range of threats is, in itself, a major threat to system security today. An increasing number of attacks are originating from blended and configuration-related threats. Blended threats combine one form of malware, such as a rootkit or Trojan, with another, such as a virus. According to the Microsoft Security Intelligence Report, Backdoor Trojans and bots continue to comprise a significant percentage of the malicious software detected by Microsoft antimalware offerings. Backdoor Trojans can enable an attacker to control an infected computer and access confidential information. Security software that handles viruses and Trojans but not spyware or rootkits is not an effective solution to blended threats, since infected systems can become unstable and more susceptible to further infection. When it comes to dealing with malware and hacker attacks, the relative hit rate and ability of a software product to detect malware is only part of the story. If the security product operates inefficiently, it can leave PCs and servers vulnerable for longer periods of time or slow performance down during pre-scheduled scans, impacting user productivity. An effective solution needs to carefully balance detection rate against speed of execution and user nuisance. Microsoft customers – enterprises and other organizations -- have told us that existing solutions do not fully meet their needs for securing clients: • Multiple management consoles needed. Oftentimes, security administrators need to use multiple management consoles to secure their clients: one for anti-virus, another for antispyware, a third for vulnerability management. This creates additional administration overhead and increases costs. • Difficulty in getting clear visibility into security state. management consoles either provide too little information and © 2007 Microsoft Corporation. environment, or are difficult to use. As a result, administrators need to spend more time and effort to understand where action is required for addressing threats and vulnerabilities. • Configuration-related attack vectors: Malware takes advantage of scenarios where the OS or software on a particular PC is not correctly configured, i.e. where patches have not been correctly applied or system settings improperly set. Knowing the specific state of the installed base of PCs is crucial, and most security products do not include this functionality. • Varying response rates. When new threats are discovered, the time it takes for antivirus vendors to release a signature can vary greatly, with some vendors averaging around 6 hours, while others average between 12-24 hours. • High application performance costs. When it comes to dealing with malware and hacker attacks, the relative hit rate and ability of a software product to detect malware is only part of the story. If the security product operates inefficiently, it can leave client PCs vulnerable for longer periods of time, or slow the PC down so that the user cannot work while regular scanning occurs. An effective solution needs to carefully balance detection rate against speed of execution and user nuisance. • Challenges in integration into the environment. Many client security solutions have their own infrastructure for configuring security agents, distributing signatures, and receiving reports and alerts. As a result, security administrators have to manage and support another infrastructure on top of the one they already use for managing desktops, laptops, and servers.

Unified Protection

Forefront Client Security delivers unified protection against emerging threats such as spyware and rootkits, as well as traditional threats such as viruses, worms, and Trojan horses. It provides a single agent for protection, detection, and removal of viruses, spyware, rootkits and other malware threats.

Delivers real-time integrated viruses and spyware scanning. Forefront Client Security scans viruses, spyware, and other malware in real-time, providing effective protection against blended threats while minimizing end user disruption. The Windows Filter Manager is Microsoft’s prescribed scanning platform by which security vendors can apply “mini-filter” technology to scan malware in real time, thus providing strong security against viruses, spyware and blended threats. The antimalware engine also includes cleaning scripts to help ensure that the machine is still in a usable state after the removal of malware. It also includes heuristic detections and protection mechanisms to find user mode rootkits, polymorphic viruses and new malware and variants. • Protection technology already used by millions of people worldwide. Forefront Client Security employs the same highly successful Microsoft protection technology already used in products such as Windows Live One Care, Windows Defender, and Microsoft Forefront Security for Exchange Server.

Effective threat response. Forefront Client Security is backed by Microsoft’s global security research & response system. Managed by Vinny Gullotto (former head of McAfee’s AVERT Labs), Microsoft’s dedicated, experienced team of malware researchers combines extensive data collected and submitted by the community with advanced automated analysis techniques to help discover and respond to new threats quickly. • Defense-in-depth as part of a comprehensive solution. Forefront Client Security delivers defense-in-depth when combined with other security solutions such as Forefront Security for Exchange Server, Forefront Security for SharePoint, Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2006, and Exchange Hosted Services. Through an integrated client security approach that layers the features of Windows Vista™, Server and Domain Isolation, and Forefront™ Client Security, Microsoft delivers unified protection for a security enhanced environment, while simplifying administration and easily integrating with existing IT infrastructure.

Simplified Administration

Forefront Client Security simplifies security product administration through central management. With one console for simplified client security administration, Forefront Client Security saves time and reduces complexity. Forefront Client Security deploys the security agent as a single client package that includes all protection and management capabilities. Using familiar interfaces similar to those found in other Microsoft tools, the console supports both local and remote access to all administrative functions, including configuration, signature updates, reporting and alerting. • Define one policy to manage client agent protection settings. Forefront Client Security helps increase efficiency by using a single policy that configures the anti-spyware, antivirus and state assessment technologies for one or more protected computers. New policies are created with preconfigured settings that can be easily tailored to the needs of the environment. Policies also include alert level settings that can be easily configured to specify the type and volume of alerts and events generated by different groups of protected machines. • Deploy signatures and software quickly. Forefront Client Security enables fast signature and software deployment to desktops, laptops and server operating systems. Forefront Client Security agent software is designed to deploy as a single client package which includes all protection and management capabilities. • Integrates into existing infrastructure. Forefront Client Security is optimized for Active Directory® Group Policy for configuring security agents and Windows Server® Update Services (WSUS) for distributing definition updates. Administrators can choose to use any software distribution system for policy, signature or software deployment. Forefront Client Security also uses database and reporting systems from Microsoft SQL Server.

Critical Visibility and Control

Forefront Client Security produces insightful prioritized security reports to enable visibility and control over both threats and vulnerabilities. A single dashboard snapshot of your current security status helps you understand where action is required. •

View insightful reports. Forefront Client Security helps you prioritize your time and focus on what’s most important now, with easy-to-use insightful reports which provide real-time data for examination and spotting emerging trends. Each report is hyperlinked to enable you to connect directly to critical information. Within the reporting console, administrators can choose to have reports e-mailed to them on a regular basis.

Stay informed with state assessment scans and security alerts. Forefront Client Security provides the tools necessary to focus on key threats and potential vulnerabilities throughout the business. State assessment scans help determine which Forefront Client Security managed computers need patches or are configured insecurely. The reporting functionality included enables customers to measure their security risk profile based on security best practices. Security alerts also create notifications when threats appear in the environment, eliminating the need to search through volumes of data.

Competition There are three main competitors in the antivirus space: Symantec, McAfee, and Trend Micro. Together, they had close to 80% revenue share in 2005 for corporate anti-virus, according to IDC. As a result, all three of these companies have a large installed base of enterprise customers. For more details about how to compete against solutions from these vendors, please see the competitive datasheets that are available at https://partner.microsoft.com/global/productssolutions/securityproducts/forefront/clientsecurity.

Symantec

Symantec is a major security, storage, and management software vendor with operations in more than 40 countries and more than $4 billion in annual revenue. It is the leader in the client/server enterprise security market. With 32% of the global security software market, it also commanded 45% of the total antivirus market segment and leads the corporate anti-virus market with 38% market share in 2005, according to IDC. Historically strong in consumer and SMB security, Symantec has made significant strides into the enterprise to command leading security software share. Symantec’s enterprise security products cover anti-virus for clients, servers, e-mail, and gateway; personal firewall; anti-spyware; compliance; intrusion prevention; and others. Symantec scales distribution through long-standing OEM relationships with Dell, HP, IBM, Gateway, and Cisco (Linksys) that install Symantec software on millions of new PCs, servers, firewall, and router products. Through a variety of acquisitions including Veritas, Sygate, and other companies, Symantec has expanded its scope to include system management and storage products. Symantec is also moving to deliver software suites that can manage multiple protection technologies. For example, Symantec Security Foundation (end-point protection) will provide a single administration console approach to the delivery of client Anti-Virus (AV), firewall, Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems (IDS and IPS), anti-spyware, behaviour blocking, and device blocking.

With its size, reputation, and share, Symantec is in a position to cross-sell or up-sell its large base of installed enterprise customers from its standard anti-virus solution (Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition) to Symantec Client Security and other security solutions. Forefront Client Security will compete with two Symantec products in particular: Symantec Anti-virus Corporate Edition and Symantec Client Security. • Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition is an integrated client / server suite which provides real-time virus and spyware protection for workstations and network servers. Through a single management console, the solution integrates Web-based graphic reporting scalable to support thousands of users and delivering reports to meet administrative needs. • Symantec Client Security provides expanded capabilities around securing desktops, laptops, and servers. In addition to anti-virus and anti-spyware technology, Symantec Client Security incorporates client firewall and intrusion prevention (generic exploit blocking against unknown threats). Out-of-the-box client firewall configurations are intended to minimize configuration efforts while helping to stop threats. Through a single management console, the solution integrates Web-based graphic reporting scalable for small business to large enterprises. McAfee McAfee’s core business is security software for computer networks and systems. It is one of the largest in the world, with $1.1B annual sales and 3,290 employees in 35 global locations. In 2005, it had 17% of the worldwide corporate anti-virus market, according to IDC. McAfee provides a broad range of protection technologies to enterprises including anti-virus, anti-spam, anti-spyware, host and network intrusion prevention, network access control, mobile security, vulnerability management, and others. McAfee has a long history with enterprise customers in delivering anti-virus and related security solutions, and is increasingly moving toward promoting multi-functional security suites for protecting clients and servers. For example, McAfee’s Total Protection for Enterprise combines threat protection for desktops, servers, and e-mail servers with single-console, scalable management. Though its historic strength is in the enterprise, it has increasingly focused on expanding its consumer products and online services businesses. McAfee’s installed base is nearly 100 million end users, mostly due to partnerships with ISPs such as Comcast and AOL that provide McAfee antivirus to their customers. McAfee Avert Labs is a well-established research organization, comprising more than 100 researchers on five continents. The organization combines malicious code and anti-virus research with intrusion prevention and vulnerability research expertise. Forefront Client Security will primarily compete with McAfee’s Active VirusScan (with or without their AntiSpyware Enterprise module, which is sold separately): • Active VirusScan Enterprise protects desktops and file servers from viruses. Active VirusScan provides administrators with single-console management and reporting by including McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO), which can be used to manage other McAfee security products. Its anti-virus protection technology combines heuristics and generic detection with signatures to protect users against known and as yet undiscovered viruses. • AntiSpyware Enterprise (sold separately) can be used with Active VirusScan to protect users from spyware and potentially unwanted programs. According to McAfee, AntiSpyware Enterprise and VirusScan share a single scanning engine to reduce system overhead. Both McAfee’s Active VirusScan and AntiSpyware Enterprise receive signature updates from McAfee’s Avert Labs.

Trend Micro

Growing an average of 29% each year since 2000, Tokyo-based Trend Micro is a leading security software vendor with about $670 million in sales in 2006 and more than 3,000 employees in over 30 countries. In 2005, Trend Micro had a 17.5% market share of the corporate anti-virus segment, and © 2007 Microsoft Corporation. All Rights Reserved.

had the leading position in gateway anti-virus. Trend Micro’s products cover client / server, storage, email, and gateway anti-virus; mobile device protection; and other areas. They sell its software through systems integrators, resellers, and manufactures, including Cisco and HP. Trend Micro has been working to integrate its products as “suites,” although some still require addons or third-party products for their completion. Trend Micro is also heavily focused on “threat lifecycle management,” a security strategy that seeks to proactively manage inevitable outbreaks at the same time that it tries to reduce outbreak frequency in a world of constant hacking. Trend Micro OfficeScan Corporate Edition competes with Forefront Client Security. • OfficeScan Corporate Edition is a client/server security solution designed to protect against the daily threats of file-based network viruses as well as secure access from intruders, spyware and other threats. As an Integrated solution, Trend provides a Web-based management Console for coordinating security policy and deploying automatic updates. By integrating with Trend Micro™ Network VirusWall™ or any Network Admission Control (NAC) device, OfficeScan can enforce policy on non-compliant computers, and then remedy, redirect, restrict, deny, or permit network access. Add-ons extend its functionality: • With optional Trend Micro™ Outbreak Prevention Services, OfficeScan can prevent or contain outbreaks—before pattern files are available. • With optional Trend Micro™ Damage Cleanup Services, it cleans the entire network of viruses, spyware, and their remnants. • Control Manager enables IT to centrally manage multiple Trend Micro antivirus products from a single console. The “Outbreak Commander” feature automates the deployment of countermeasures during outbreaks, often before signature updates become available. Trend Micro products are supported by service from TrendLabs, a global network of five regional antivirus research and support centers.

Winning Accounts Winning against client security competitors requires understanding why customers consider switching from their existing client security vendor, then reframing the conversation on the strong benefits of Forefront Client Security: a software solution that delivers unified virus and spyware protection for business desktops, laptops, and server operating systems that is easy to manage and control. •

Understand the pain points and problems that customers have with their existing client security solution. These may include: management dashboard and reporting that provides too little information or is difficult to use, lack of integration into the existing infrastructure, lack of visibility into vulnerabilities as well as threats, problems with client software stability, slowdowns during pre-scheduled scans, and support problems.

Explain that managing threats is more than managing viruses or spyware—it’s about managing the state of the client computer and the threats to which it is exposed. Forefront Client Security brings together information about both threats and vulnerabilities (which many competitors do not).

Focus on how Microsoft products address customer pain points and add value. For example, Forefront Client Security’s integration with the customer’s Microsoft infrastructure (Active Directory in particular) means maximum performance not only for their hardware and software, but for their IT staff, who can leverage their education, certifications, and skills.

Capitalize on the opportunity to consolidate the licensing of client security along with their other infrastructure software, which lowers cost and reduces complexity. Forefront Client Security is included in the Enterprise CAL suite. Early feedback from account teams indicates that discussing what the customer is paying their current security provider—and how this translates into savings with the Enterprise CAL—helps close the Enterprise CAL sale.

Answer: Forefront Client Security is planned to be released to manufacture in 2Q CY2007. Home Use Rights:

“Will Forefront Client Security include Home Use Rights?”

Answer: We’re planning on including home use rights for Forefront Client Security at no additional charge. Further details will be available as we get closer to launch. Performance: “I heard that recently Windows OneCare didn’t get the VirusBulletin 100% award. Isn’t Forefront Client Security running the same engine?” See article: http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=197002881 Answer: Virus Bulletin, a magazine which reports on the prevention, detection and removal of malware and spam, conducts regular comparison tests of the detection rates of anti-virus software. Products which manage to detect 100% of the viruses in the wild, without false alarming, are given the VB100% award. Products are tested for their ability to detect a large set of different viruses, scanning both on access and on demand. The latest set of tests were carried out on the Windows Vista operating system for the first time. This time round, Windows Live OneCare was not included in Virus Bulletin’s VB100 list because it did not detect one virus variant. While this is not positive news, there are a number of details you can point out if questioned by a customer on this review – as appropriate: •

Windows Live OneCare only failed to detect one virus variant out of a large sample.

Several other vendors – including McAfee and Norman – also failed to detect 100% of the viruses in the test and were also not included in the VB100 list

We are looking closely at the methodology and results of the test as part of our ongoing work to continually enhance Windows Live OneCare to ensure the highest level of protection and service that we can provide our customers. We fully expect to achieve VB100 in June when all products are tested again.

The fact that different scan engines are successful at detecting different virus sets illustrates the value of our Forefront server security products, which include multiple antivirus engines to reduce the window of exposure to any one threat.

Switching:

“Why should I consider switching from my existing vendor?”

Answer: Forefront Client Security not only delivers unified protection from viruses, spyware, and other malware threats, but also adds significant value to customers by delivering simplified administration and critical visibility into threats while easily integrating into your existing environment.
