ACKNOWLEDGMENT

I am very grateful to my parents for accepting my decision of joining a design career. I am also thankful to my elder brother and sister were always by my side(atleast on phone, thanks to AIRTEL) to boost me up. I would like to thank Mayank Chandra Thakur for designing my logo. Mayank (a communication design student) is my batch mate from D. J. Academy of Design. I am also highly obliged to Mrs Farah Kurien, my first design teacher who kindled in me the passion for design. Thanks to LMW to have started this institution and getting one of the best design visionary, Prof. S. Balaram. He has been more than a dean. His words “only a good human beings could become a good designers” would always be cherished and lived by me. I would like to thank the CEO and the Dean who always supported us in our work and specially kept the studios open for us to work till midnight which was a great help indeed without which lots of my assignments would have been incomplete. Special thanks Chetan all my friends for giving me the necessary feedbacks that helped me in refining and re-refining my works.

WHAT DESIGN MEANS TO ME ?

I am satish, a student designer from the DJ Academy of Design. I come from the steel city, Rourkela, Orissa, India. In the next few minutes you will read about the work i have done at the DJ Academy of Design. The stream i chose was Industrial Design. The reason for doing this was to learn about various materials and feel them physically. After carefully observing the ways of the industry, i realized that there was an extensive overuse of plastic for products. I chose not to be a part of this crime and thus started concentrating more on eco-friendly products which i believe is the future. Over my 3 years of study, i have come to realize that there are two aspects of design - A technical aspect and a form aspect. I feel that as a product designer, i should concentrate on the form aspect of design although keeping into mind that the technological part is necessary too. Thus my belief that Form Follows Function. Another thing that i strongly believe in and follow myself while designing a product, is that a good design is always a blend between material and color.

SKETCHES & DRAWINGS

FROM 1997-2008.

SKETCHES AND DRAWINGS: The next few pages that you are going to see are a few selected sketches done in between 1997-2008. I was more interested in human anatomy so what you may find is more of those and some nature drawing.

PENCIL SKETCHES

COLOR & COMPOSITION

SEMESTER : 1 & 2

COLOR & COMPOSITION: Composition is something which is so much attached to our day to day life that we cannot separate it. For example a nicely composed food plate improves our appetite. And without color everything is lifeless.

BASIC SHAPES

Using circles as the basic shape created a composition and created depth out of the overall composition hence formed.

Using triangles as the basic shape created a composition and created progression out of the overall composition hence formed.

REPRESENTATION SKILLS

SEMESTER : 3

REPRESENTATION SKILLS: This was a course taken at the end of the third semester which was to understand the light and shadow while representing our concepts in front of clients. And also various ways how we can represent different materials using colors.

LIGHTER

This is a Hand Rendered lighter which was done using markers, color pencils, dry pastels and felt pens. The main objective in doing this object was to learn about the representation of various materials and the play of light and shadow.

WATCH

This is a Hand Rendered watch which was done to explore basically the metal finish and how to represent it. The medium used is mainly 0.5 Mechanical Pencil and Dry Pastels for background. Color pencils are used for the inner detail of the watch dial.

GREEN PRODUCTS

SEMESTER : 3 ONWARDS

Green Products: The next few pages are a few products which came up as my inclination towards paper and natural material. These were purely developed on my special interest and was mainly guided by Mr Ranjan De.

BAL-GANESH

This is the paper Bal-Ganesha I made as an exploration of paper under the Guidance of Mr. Ranjan De. The materials used are newspaper and fevicol. Then it is coated with a coating of touch wood so as to make it waterproof. The process of making this paper Ganesha is basically the additive method so the material wastage is almost zero.

TABLE LAMP

This is the Paper Table Lamp I made as a part of the same exploration of paper but here I took it to a higher level which was a lot more difficult and challenging. The center of gravity was a major problem in this case and also aesthetics of the product could not have been ignored so I came up with this very unusual looking form. Again the material used in this is just newspaper and fevicol coated with touch wood. The only alien material are wire, bulb and the bulb holder.

COIR -GANESH

This is a Ganesh I made out of coir and no reinforcements were used in this for supporting the whole figure. The motif behind using this material was I wanted to give a different feel to the whole figure and also making it bio-degradable. The material used was coir and cotton thread for holding the coir together and also giving it shape. The different body parts were held together by itself due to the form.

NIRMAAN

This is a group work done in the campus near the café to make the place usable using the materials collected from the junkyard of the campus. Basically a seating area was created and is still being used. A upside down car was made by us and the wheels were used for seating. Actually this activity called Nirmaam was created by be me and (Rohit) one of my friends where we call people and we take some problem and solve it in a creative way this was one of such activities. The ultimate aim is to learn from each other.

FORM DRIVEN

SEMESTER : 3-6

FORM DRIVEN: As I had said earlier form is something which I consider very important for any product development so the next few pages that you are going to see now are a few products that we did in our elements of form courses.

PEN STAND

This is pen/pencil and brush stand basically done as a form exploration and finding some use also in a way. Here in this product I tried to solve the mixing of brush and pens if kept together hence creating confusions. Aesthetics is something which was taken into account. The material use in this case is EPS coated with putty and then finished. Coated with enamel paint.

COBRA-LAMP

This is a table lamp done for the nature and form course. Here the King Cobra was taken for study and its postures were studied intensively. Hence came up with this form taking into account the aesthetic and functional part. I used LED which consume very less power and made it wireless. It has a AC power supply port which charges the battery. Once charged the light works for 100 hours.

SCISSORS

This is a pair of scissors which is developed for children between the age of 6-12 years . The form was taken inspiration from the theme child like(left) and energetic(right). The color for this product was chosen after a study of this age group. To bring in element of fun in the product I have used 2 colors which was later liked by the age group.

PHOTOGRAPHY

SEMESTER : 2 ONWARDS

PHOTOGRAPHY: The photographs that you are going to see in the next few pages are captured on “Nikon F55”. Photography means play of light and shadow to me. The pictures that you will find in the next few pages are taken from different parts of the country.

SIMPLE PRODUCT DESIGN

Simple Product Design : To design a CELL PHONE CARRYING device for women for Indian dresses.

SEMESTER : 4

CELL PHONE CARRYING DEVICE

This is a cell phone carrying device for women according to the Indian dresses(which do not have pockets). Safety of the Cell phones was a major issue taken care of and accessing the phone when it is still in the purse was also solved. A padded back support was put behind on the neck portion so as the weight of the phone gets distributed. The phone is now near the breast area, which is the most sensitive area to reduce theft, a transparent sheet to make the phone accessible without taking the phone out of the carrier. The carrier is also made of pure cotton of a range of colors which matches with the dresses and is washable.

PAPER WORKSHOP

PAPER WORK SHOP: This was a group project and it was basically to design the FUTURE F1 CAR. The only constrain which was there was the usage of paper.

SEMESTER : 5

FUTURE “F1” CAR

This was a group project by Atul Nath, Pranav Kumar, Pranav. S, and me under the guidance of Mr.N.N.Patel. We were given the brief to use only paper and it should be a new concept. The materials used were Japanese Ivory sheets, Fevicol, Sticker paper and enamel paint for protective coating and finish. It was a great learning experience starting from the designing to the final model was done in just 3 days.

DESIGN COMPETITION

SEMESTER : 6

DESIGN COMPETITION :To design a device or something which will make TRAVELING WITH BABIES a bit more comfortable. It was a group project and we were concentrating on the problem of traveling with babies in TWO WHEELERS specially Indian context.

TRAVELING WITH BABIES

This was a group project by Atul Nath, Pranav Kumar, Pranav. S, and me. This concept was sent to the Samsonite design competition 2008. We had taken Indian context into consideration for this project where bikes are a common mode of transport. And it becomes really difficult when people have to travel ob bikes with babies. So we came up with this concept of having a baby cradle which could be fixed on to the petrol tank of the bike. Hence the father’s can carry the kid without having an assistant for the child. The cradle is attached to the bike with a 3-point harness which ensures its stability on the bike. In case of roughness of roads there is a rubber padding and it also adds to the extra comfort . There is a hood on top of the cradle so as to protect it from direct sunlight and rain. As the cradle is in opposite direction it prevents dust from coming in and no strong wind hits the face of the child.

INTERNSHIP

SINGLE RESONATOR

This is a musical instrument which I developed during my internship. Actually there are a series of these instruments and a person is supposed to play them with 1 or 2 sticks. The top part is a aluminum plate which produces the sound and the a hollow PVC pipe acts as the resonator when beaten on the plate. A series of these instruments where I was mainly concentrating on the handling of the instrument as a single piece or in a group. To bring in some connectivity between the base and top and yet some interesting form at the end was my main motif.

MEETING BELL

This is a musical instrument which I developed during my internship. This is a meeting bell to be used by the chairperson to start and end the meeting. Here an Aluminum rod is used as the vibrating body and the sliced bamboo acts as the resonator. The stick is used for striking and hence the instrument resonates for around 30 seconds which is supposed to be the time where there will be absolute silence before the meeting starts. The cover bamboo was used so as to give a nice feeling to the user and inside velvet for that rich look. The stick later after use goes inside the hollow rod and box can be closed and taken away.

CLAY ANIMATION

SEMESTER : 7

Clay Animation Workshop: To make a 30 seconds animation film making a new story board and characters. It was group project where Mayank (a communication design student) Atul and me (Industrial design students) worked. So it was a different experience.
