Minnesota Duluth Tabbed Preseason Coaches Favorite St. Paul, Minn. - The defending Football National Champions of the University of Minnesota Duluth were selected by the league coaches as the overall and north division preseason favorite in the NSIC in 2009. The Bulldogs edged out Minnesota State University, Mankato (the coaches favorite in the south division) by six points to earn the honor. UMD received nine first place votes compared to five for the Mavericks.

Preseason NSIC Football Coaches Poll

The Bulldogs will boast the NSIC North Division Offensive Preseason Player of the Year in running back Isaac Odim and North Division Defensive Preseason Player of the Year in linebacker Robbie Aurich. Minnesota State was picked to win the south and will have the NSIC’s Preseason Defensive Player of the Year in the south in defensive back Kelvin Rodgers. Wayne State’s quarterback Silas Fluellen repeated as the South Division Offensive Preseason Player of the Year. As in the 2008 season, the NSIC football schedule will be broken into two seven-team divisions (north/south). Each team will play ten conference games that will count towards the NSIC Overall Champion as well as six divisional games that will count towards the NSIC North/South Championships. In all, three league championships will be awarded (Overall Champion, North Division Champion, South Division Champion). Ties will not be broken for overall or division champions.

2009 NSIC Preseason Players of the Year NSIC North Offensive Preseason Player of the Year #31 Isaac Odim (RB, 6-0, 215, Jr., Rochester, Minn. / Rochester CC) University of Minnesota Duluth

Odim made his Bulldog debut last fall and the then-sophomore running back wound up setting club marks for rushing yards (1,638), rushing touchdowns (26), average yards per carry (7.3 yards), total touchdowns (30) and scoring (180) while equaling marks for 100-yard rushing games (nine) and consecutive 100-yard rushing games (seven). He earned a spot on both the d2football.com (honorable mention) and Don Hansen Football Gazette (third team) teams in addition to the All-NSIC first team. Odim scored two of his touchdowns in the National Championship game last season, a 5-yard touchdown reception and a 4-yard run. He averaged 109.2 yards rushing per game in 2008.

NSIC North Defensive Preseason Players of the Year #41 Robbie Aurich (LB, 5-11, 250, Jr., Spring Lake, Mich.) University of Minnesota Duluth

Aurich led the Bulldogs with 101 tackles in 2008, with 13 of those coming in the 21-14 win over Northwest Missouri State in the NCAA DII National Championship game. He had 57 solo stops, 3.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and an interception for a defense that held NSIC opponents to an average of 11.1 points per game and did not give up more than 21 points to anyone. NSIC SOUTH Offensive Preseason Player of the Year #7 Silas Fluellen (QB, 6-0, 210, Sr., Bellevue, Neb. / Bellevue West HS) Wayne State College

Fluellen earned NSIC South Division All-Conference First Team honors last season after guiding Wayne State to a 9-3 record and the school’s first-ever NCAA playoff berth. Fluellen completed 222 of 375 passes (59.2%) for 2,902 yards and 16 TD’s while rushing for another 518 yards and five scores. He led the NSIC in total offense last season at 285.0 yards per game and ranked second in passing yards per game (241.8). Fluellen already holds career passing records at WSC for touchdowns (50) and passing yards (7,325) and needs just 36 completions to break Jamie Jones’ school record for career completions (578). Entering his senior season, Fluellen ranks fourth in NSIC career total offense (6,695 yards) and is sixth in NSIC career passing yards at 5,966 yards. Fluellen was the 2008 NSIC South Division Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.

NSIC SOUTH Defensive Preseason Players of the Year #2 Kelvin Rodgers (DB, 6-0, 177, Sr., East St. Louis, Ill./East St. Louis HS) Minnesota State University, Mankato Rodgers was a First-Team All-NSIC South Division selection as well as being named Second-Team All-American by D2football.com and the Don Hansen Football Gazette. He also was garnered SecondTeam All-Region by Daktronics and the Don Hansen Football Gazette. As a defensive back he finished with 23 tackles, including three interceptions - one of which went for a touchdown - and five pass breakups. He was the NSIC South Division Return Specialist of the Year in 2008 after he returned 31 kicks for 841 yards and two touchdowns. He set the MSU single-game record with six kick returns for 178 yards in MSU’s opening-game loss to Central Missouri. He returned four kicks for 155 yards and a score against Wayne State and was named the NSIC Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts. The following week the returned five kicks for 135 yards and a touchdown in MSU’s win over Winona State and was again named the league’s Special Teams Player of the Week He had a stretch of four consecutive games (Sept. 13-Oct. 4) where he returned either a punt, interception or a kick for a touchdown. On the season he collected 1,135 all purpose yards.

2009 NSIC Preseason Players to Watch Augustana

#12 Luke Butler (QB, 6-5, 220, Sr., Pocatello, Idaho) Elected team captain for the 2009 season, Butler enters his second season as the starting quarterback for the Vikings. He started 11 games in 2008 and completed nearly 55 percent of his passes, going 131-of-239 for 1,654 yards with 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He completed 19of-30 for 243 yards and three scores in a 42-21 victory at Concordia-St. Paul. He posted a season-high 21-of-30 effort in a 39-20 victory over Southwest Minnesota State, throwing for 290 yards and three touchdowns, including a season-long 82-yarder. Butler also rushed nine times for 82 yards at Minnesota, Crookston and threw for over 100 yards in 7-of-11 games. Butler joined the Vikings after playing two seasons at Idaho State. #33 Brandon McMichael (LB, 6-2, 245, Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) McMichael enters his fourth season as a starting outside linebacker for Augustana in 2009. One of four team captains elected for the season, McMichael is one of the Vikings’ top returning tacklers. He sat out the 2008 season with a medical redshirt, but in 2007, McMichael registered a team-high 94 total tackles, including 50 solo stops and 44 assists. He also had a team-high 14 tackles for loss, which resulted in 47 yards. In addition, he racked up a team-high 5.5 sacks for a loss of 36 yards. A 2007 AllNorth Central Conference honorable mention performer, McMichael recorded double digits in tackles 4 times that season. Against South Dakota, he collected a career-high 14 tackles. He also picked up 13 tackles against Central Washington, 12 against Minnesota Duluth and 10 against Concordia-St. Paul.

BEmidji State

#8 Derek Edholm (QB, 6-1, 181, Jr., Anoka, Minn.) Edholm matured into one of the league’s finest quarterbacks in 2008. Not only did his production go up each game in the back half of the season, the sophomore became more efficient. Edholm finished the year completing 193-of-296 passes with just five interceptions to set a new standard for single-season completion percentage at BSU. In all he passed for 2,136 yards with 17 touchdowns with another gained with his feet. #24 Jake Anderson (LB, 6-2, 230, Sr., Karlstad, Minn.) Anderson, Bemidji State’s defensive captain for 2009, enters his senior season after a 2008 campaign during which he became pillar in the middle if Beavers’ Gang Green defense. He led the team with 70 tackles (32 solo), 11.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 quarterback sacks while ranking second on the team with three interceptions. He completed his junior season ranked 16th in the league in total tackles, eighth in tackles for loss and his three forced fumbles was good for third.

Concordia-St. Paul

#16 Calvin Simon (WR, 6-2, 215, Jr., Shakopee, Minn.) Simon is one of the most explosive playmakers in the league and is poised to continue his development as a Golden Bear. Through two years, Simon has already eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. He holds multiple school records for single game receiving, including touchdowns (4, freshman year) and longest play from scrimmage, set last year when he hauled in a 99 yard touchdown strike. In 21 career games on the gridiron, Simon has four 100 yard receiving efforts and three multi-touchdown games. The 6-3, 215 pound receiver has size and speed. Last year, he hauled in 35 catches for 517 yards and four TD’s while playing alongside CU’s all-time receiving leader, Tyrone Ruffin. Simon leads a solid WR core for CU in 2009 and is a two-time NSIC Offensive Player of the Week in his career. #23 Joe Butler (DB, 5-10, 180, Sr., Kansas City, Mo.) Butler enters his senior season leading a talented and deep group of cornerbacks on the CU defense. He has spent two years at Concordia after transferring from North Dakota State College of Science. Butler heads into his final campaign as a Golden Bear completely healthy and ready to shut down opposing receivers. In seven games last year, Butler made 19 tackles, 17 of them solo. He had a breakthrough performance against Southwest Minnesota State, with eight solo tackles and a pass breakup. He also made four tackles (three solo) against Augustana including another pass breakup. In his redshirt season in 2007, Butler earned CU Scout Defensive Player of the Week honors prior to a victory over MSU Moorhead.

University of Mary

#79 L.T. Brown (C, 6-3, 310, Sr., Idaho Falls, Idaho) Brown enters his third season as a starter on the Marauders offensive line. A two-time second team All-NSIC selection, Brown is a powerful blocker who anchors the U-Mary offensive attack. A team captain last year, Brown is one of two threeyear starters up front as the Marauders return six linemen with starting experience. #1 Phillip Thomas (CB, 5-10, 185, Sr., Fresno, Calif.) Thomas leads a veteran secondary for the University of Mary in 2009. The senior will hold down one of the corner spots after making 36 tackles (15 solo) and knocking down three passes last season, his first with the Marauders. Thomas’ most notable play of the year was deflecting a fourth-down overtime pass on the final play of the game in a 24-17 win over Minnesota State University Moorhead as U-Mary won its third straight “Battle for the Paddle”.

2009 NSIC Preseason Players to Watch Minnesota, Crookston

The Golden Eagle Football team welcomes back two North Division All-Conference Honorable Mention offensive lineman for the 2009 season. Mario Perez (OG, Jr., Colton, Calif.) played and started in 10 games. Jeff Schiller (C, So., Lakeside, Calif.) played and started in nine games during the 2008 campaign. The duo helped lead the Golden Eagles to a 3.2 yard/rush average, a 4.0 yards/play average and a .750 scoring percentage inside the red-zone. Tom Melhorn (Sr., LB, 6-0, 205, White Bear Lake, Minn.) Melhorn leads the Golden Eagles defensively into the 2009 season. Last season, Melhorn recorded 44 total tackles to lead all returning defensive players. In additions, he had three tackles for a loss, three interceptions and one fumble recovery.

Minnesota Duluth

#67 Tobias Lemke (OL, 6-4, 290, Sr., Essen, Germany) Lemke is entering his fourth season of starting duty on the Bulldogs’ offensive line, having worked out of the right guard position as a true freshman in 2006 before being relocated to center the ensuing season. Last fall, Lemke was chosen to both the Football Gazette All-American second team and All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference first team in addition to earning NSIC All-Academic Team honors. #38 Cole Strilzuk (DB, 5-11, 190, Sr., Balsam Lake, Wis.) Strilzuk took over as UMD’s first string left cornerback last fall and proceeded to top UMD in interceptions with six (the most by a Bulldog in four years) and pass breakups (10) while finishing eighth on the club in total tackles with 48. The Balsam Lake, Wis., product, who picked off one pass in each of the Bulldogs’ final three NCAA playoff games, secured a spot on the 2008 All-NSIC second team as well as the Football Gazette All-Super Region 3 third team.

Minnesota State

#7 Jake Aberg (RB, 5-11, 201, R-Fr., Winterset, Iowa) Aberg played in two games before shutting down the season due to an injury. He rushed for 116 yards in thos two games, including 12 carries for 61 yards and two scores in MSU’s win over Concordia-St. Paul.

MSU MOORHEAD

#17 Joe Johnson (WR, 5-10, 195, Sr., Moorhead, Minn.) Johnson caught 29 pases for 264 yards and one touchdown with a long reception of 23 yards in 2008. He was a key special teams participant last season, as he led the Dragons with 14 punt returns for 148 yards, an average of 10.6 a return. He also brought back five kickoffs for 11.0 yards per attempt. He was honored as 2008 MSUM Special Teams Player of the Year. He also turned nine receptions into 98 yards and an average of 10.9 yards per reception as a freshman in 2005. #3 Jon Swart (NG, 5-11, 275, Sr., Fargo, N.D. / North HS) Swart brings a chunk of experience to Dragon defensive front. He had 29 tackles, including 19 solo stops, eight tackles for loss and 3.5 quarterback sacks last season. He earned honorable mention All-NSIC recognition as a sophomore, finished seventh on the club with 47 tackles in 10 games, including seven tackles for loss and four quarterback sacks. He led the Dragons with four fumble recoveries in 2007, returned fumbles 16 yards for a touchdown against against Northern State and 28 yards for a TD against Southwest Minnesota State.

Northern StATE

#3 Brian Jark (WR, 5-10, 210, Sr., Aberdeen, S.D. / NDSU) Jark finished 2008 with 52 receptions for 484 yards and two touchdowns and also added two rushing touchdowns, earning Second-Team All North Division Offense honors. He enters 2009 needing five receptions, 655 receiving yards, and three touchdowns to tie Northern State’s all-time records in those categories. He needs ten receptions to tie Damien Hoffman of Minnesota-Morris for most all-time NSIC receptions with 185. He is currently 11th all-time in the conference with 1,939 receiving yards and is tied for eighth all-time with 16 receiving touchdowns. Jark was voted by his teammates as a captain for the third time in his career. #22 Anthony Ponzo (LB, 6-1, 220, Sr., Santa Rosa, Calif. / Santa Rosa JC) Ponzo started all 11 games for the Wolves at inside linebacker a season ago and led the team with 98 tackles and finished fourth in the conference with 84 tackles during league games. He finished the year with four tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, one interception, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery, earning himself Honorable Mention All-North Division Defense honors. He enters 2009 as a team captain and the anchor to a very deep linebacking corps for the Wolves.

#96 Randy Earl (DT, 6-4, 285, Sr., Racine, Wis.) Earl was named to the NSIC South Division Second-Team last year after he finished with 40 tackles, which was tied for sixth Southwest Minnesota StATE on the team. He had four sacks and three pass break-ups. He #22 Zach Wysong (RB, 5-10, 198, Sr., Hills, Minn.) collected a season-high nine stops in MSU’s win over St. Cloud A second team All-NSIC South Division honorState. ee in 2008, Wysong rushed for 1,016 yards and nine touchdowns on 234 carries. He finished the season with the second highest single-season rushing total in school history. Wysong also led the team in receptions with 64 for 470 yards and finished 20th in nation in all-purpose yards (136.0), 33rd in the nation in rushing and 36th in receptions. He begins the 2009 season needing 283 yards rushing to become the school’s all-time rushing leader.

Wayne State

#8 Logan Masters (WR, 6-3, 180, Sr., Storm Lake, Iowa) Masters has caught at least two passes in every collegiate game he has played (35) entering his senior season. He was named Preseason All-American by the Sporting News and Lindy’s College Football Preview after recording 80 catches for 1,179 yards and six touchdowns last season as a junior. With his 1,097 yards in receiving as a sophomore, MasST. CLoud StATE ters is the first WSC receiver to record back-to-back 1,000 #2 Brandon Geiss (RB, 5-8, 185, So., Shorewood, Ill.) yard receiving seasons. He was named to the All- ktronics Super Region #3 All-Region First Team honors. Denne was named Honorable Mention All-NSIC North Division in 2008. He led the Huskies in assisted tackles with WINONA State 28 and recorded 51 tackles in 11 games. He also had five #78 Marcus Greatens (OL, 6-5, 300, Sr., Oneida, Wis.) tackles for loss, 2.5 quarterback sacks and an interception Greatens returns to the Winona State offensive return for 27 yards. He carried the ball 181 times # 74 Ryan Rothwell (DT, 6-4, 300, Sr., McFarland, Wis.) for 868 yards and 7 touchdowns averaging 4.8 Rothwell will return to the Warrior defensive line after being yards per carry and 78.9 rushing yards per contest, which was sixth best among NSIC rushers. Epsteen named all-conference honorable mention last season. He was also a reliable target for Peacock passers as he caught was also an all-academic performer off the field. As a redshirt freshman in 2008, Klinkner finished second on the squad with 68 tackles while leading the team with 9.5 tackles for loss. He finished second on the team in solo tackles and ranked fourth in sacks.

#7 Dominique Jackson (DB, 6-0, 185, Sr., Riviera Beach, Fla.) Last season, Jackson appeared in all 11 games for the Peacocks. He recorded 51 tackles, including 1 for loss, and intercepted two passes returning one 34 yards. Jackson returned 8 punts for 137 yards with a long of 89 yards for a touchdown in UIU’s opener versus Division I Drake. In 2007, he appeared in all 11 games for UIU and recorded 58 tackles, including two tackles for loss. Jackson led the NSIC with five interceptions in his sophomore season including four at Minnesota, Crookston, one of which he returned for a 100+ yard touchdown. He was named Northern Sun Second Team All-Conference in 2007. Jackson was named NSIC Defensive Player of the Week in 2007 following the game at Minnesota, Crookston.
