Chapter 1 The Problem and its Setting

Introduction The Philippines has always been colonized by different countries ever since one can remember. Of course, being the country, it is, Filipinos was influenced by these countries in various aspects, especially in the food industry. One country, to be specific is Japan. Japan has always been known as a traditional country. They are one of only three national food traditions recognized by the UN for its cultural significance. They are for their pastries; cakes to be exact. To give an example, Japan is well-known for its Dorayaki or “Dora Cake”. It is a type of Japanese confection, a red-bean pancake which consists of two small pancake-like patties made from castella wrapped around a filling of sweet Azuki red bean paste. Legend has it that the first Dorayaki were made when a samurai named Benkei forgot his gong (dora) upon leaving a farmer’s home where he was hiding and the farmer subsequently used the gong to fry the pancakes, thus the name Dorayaki. This study about the feasibility of establishing a Japanese Cake Business in Malolos, Bulacan came from the concept of said bread.

Statement of the Problem

This feasibility study is conducted to evaluate the feasibility of establishing “Bucci Cake”; a Japanese Cake Business in Malolos, Bulacan. Specifically, this study intends to answer the following questions. Marketing Aspect 1. Who will benefit on the proposed “Japanese cake”? 2. What are the varieties of Japanese cake to be served? 3. What is the current trend of supply and demand of this type of business? 4. What advertisements can be done to promote this business? 5. What will be the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats that this business will stumble across? 6. What are the marketing strategies suitable to ensure its success in terms of product, price, place and promotion? Management Aspect 1. What form of business organization is appropriate? 2. What would be the vision, mission statement of the business? 3. What activities should be managed during the pre-operating period? 4. Who are the people involved in the business? 5. What is the business organization based on: 5.1 Organizational Chart,

5.2 Manpower Requirements, 5.3 Hiring and Training of Employees, 5.4 Compensation Scheme Technical Aspect 1. What is the specification of the product? 2. What are the raw materials needed for the business? 3. What is the process of making Japanese Cake? 4. Where is the building located? 5. What are the machines and equipment to be used in the business? 6. What would be the labor requirements for the business? 7. What would be the schedule for production? 8. What are the required utilities for the business, its uses, quantity required, availability of sources and costs? 9. What is the waste disposal method to be adopted? 10. What is the cost of unit production?

Financial Aspect 1. How much money is needed to make the product? 2. How much is the total project cost? 3. What will be the source of funds? 4. What is the expected return of investment after a year of its operation?

Socio-Economic Aspect 1. What benefits will the society get from this study? 2. What are the economic implications of the proposed business Objectives of the Study Having an on a business objective is one of the important ways to attain and accomplish success by means of knowing what the purposes are and target at the given time with the right execution that can provide customer’s satisfaction by giving the right services and knowing the right customers to be served. Marketing Aspect 1. To identify who will be the beneficiaries. 2. To identify the varieties of the cake to be served. 3. To know the current trend of supply and demand of the business. 4. To identify the advertisements that can be done to promote the business. 5. To know the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the business. 6. To make best strategies considering the four P’s. Management Aspect 1. To know what form of business organization is appropriate. 2. To know the vision, mission of the statement of the business. 3. To determine the activities should be managed during the pre-operating period. 4. To identify the people involved in the business. 5.

Technical Aspect 1. To know the specification of the product. 2. To know the raw materials needed for the business. 3. To identify the process of making Japanese Cake. 4. To identify the location of the building. 5. To identify the machines and equipments to be used in the business. 6. To know the labor requirements for the business. 7. To know the schedule for production. 8. To identify the required utilities uses, quantity required, availability of sources and cost for the business. 9. To determine the annual income. 3. To identify the source of funds. 4. To know what the financial conditions in a year would be. Socio-economic Aspect 1. To identify the benefits of the business in the society. 2. To identify the economic implications of the proposed business.

Significance of the Study Food in the Philippines has always been influenced by other countries. Often, Filipinos are not aware that the food they eat in their daily lives are mostly from other countries. The study gives the people, or the possible consumer satisfaction and it can benefit the community. The study aims to provide useful insights and information in building up such kind of business. This could serve as a guide to some entrepreneurs who likes to enter this kind of business industry. This study may serve as a future reference of entrepreneurs that have interest in building up a business. It could be a solution to the community for the decrease of unemployment rate. And in this business, it can help develop entrepreneurship in every Filipino.

Scope and Limitations of the Study This research focuses on the production of the Japanese Cake that is a cake filled with assorted flavors inside. The target market of the product is open for those who are into sweet products, probably adolescents to elderly adults, around Centro Escolar University- Malolos, Bulacan. Research Methodology The data gathered was classified as quantitative data, as the data will be in numbers and will be statistically computed. The proponents were able to collect data through school information. Descriptive method was used to explain thoroughly the perception of the respondents

of Centro Escolar University-Malolos regarding the proposed business. The respondents of the study are three hundred two (302) students of Centro Escolar University Malolos, Bulacan. The proponents used questionnaire survey to be able to collect data and information concerning the respondents’ feedback to the said proposed product. Instruments and Technique Used The researchers used questionnaires which were distributed to the respondents as a primary data and was used to gather information about buyer’s opinion in determining the demand and the evaluation of the supply. Then the data gathered were manually tallied and computed using applicable statistical treatment. This was done using Microsoft Excel 2010. This survey helped the proponents to get the percentage and ratings of the respondents on the product. In this section, respondents were asked about their age, gender and preferences when it comes to the product, price, place and promotion of the business.

Sampling Procedure To determine the sample size, the researchers used the Slovin’s Formula with a marginal error of five percent (5%). Slovins’s Formula: n = N/ (1+Ne 2 ) N=Total Population e= Margin of error

CEU-Malolos has a total population of 2,284. n = 2,284 / (1 + (2.284)(0.05) 2 ) n = 2,284 /4.09 n = 344 Using Slovin’s formula, it arrived at 344 respondents which are the target population in conducting the survey regarding the proposed product
