Black Panther Mise en scene: The scene contains the typical action traits. In this scene they use explosions to highlight chaos and the effect it has on the surroundings. This scene of black panther contains exaggerated action showing car chases, crashes and gunshots. The pacing starts off fast and slows down to highlight humour or really exaggerated action. This film uses the typical action genre traits throughout but is very effective, most action films focus on delivering humour as well as action to balance the pacing, the soundtrack which plays at the same time also helps to control the pacing of the film. The colour grading in black panther is vibrant throughout which isn't stereotypical of a action film as most action films become vibrant in the actual action scenes but have a dull colour when building up to it so when the action does happen the viewer is instantly attracted.Black Panther isn't your typical action film as it grabs elements from all different genres, drama, sci fi, comedy, etc and focuses on controversial topics such as the tension between the black and white race in america. The director Ryan coogler addresses the different problem in society through his films fruitvale station and creed. An action film usually contains a protagonist or protagonists who are go through a series of challenges that include violence, extended fighting, physical feats, and frantic chases. Action films usually have a resourceful hero struggling against incredible odds, which include life threatening situations, a villain or a pursuit which generally concludes in victory for the hero. The use of CGI in action films has become expected as it is a cheap and effective way to create action sequences and other visual effects that required professional stunt crews in the past. This film uses CGI effectively as reactions to action films using CGI have been mixed but this film has got many good reactions to the CGI used in the film. The action genre is also closely associated with the thriller and adventure genres.
Shawshank Redemption Drama films rely on emotional development of characters. In the scene that I have chosen it shows the development of the character over years as it shows his work pays off as he's been trying to escape all these years this scene also comes as a shock to the viewer as they wasn't given any knowledge on him trying to escape this allows the shock to be more powerful has the viewer is then put in the same position as the characters . Shawshank Redemption isn't the typical crime prison drama as they usually end with the main character still in prison as the overall message is usually that crime doesn't pay, however in Shawshank Redemption the overall message is that the justice system is failing. The colour grading is saturated causing the viewer to focus on the narrative, which is what most dramas try to do in order to be effective. Shawshank Redemption was a strong film as the director was able to portray his ideas through the narrative, he seems to focus on character development in order to get the viewer to become attached to the characters. One of the genre conventions of the prison drama genre is the focus on the theme of faith, friendship and survival and this film is probably one of the best examples of how to use these themes effectively as it shows that all of the themes are connected as the main character needs friends in order to survive in prison and he must have faith in these friends. Overall the end of the film portrays a hard hitting ending leaving a lasting impression upon the audience. The film uses realistic and believable characters as well as realistic settings and stories.
Interstellar Interstellar is a sci fi film and shows trades of the sci fi genre throughout the film contains a post apocalyptic world and characters seek to find a new world as earth is dying. The film contains exaggerated scenes with spaceships and new planets, this isn't your average sci fi though as it explores real science theories and entertains while also giving knowledge to the viewer. In a sci fi film they usually include a futuristic element and technologies to explore social, political and philosophical issues. The colour grading in this film differs depending on the scene as it starts off with a more saturated look at the beginning when the main character is on earth to highlight the lack of life around them, this film also shows traits of other genres such as action and drama as most films include traits from other genres in order to become successful. In the scene I have chosen it shows the main characters landing on a new planet as they look to find a new home, this planet is nothing but water and plays on the belief that if a planet has water it must have life. The main characters are hit by a huge wave killing one of the crew members this was effective as it was unexpected, the non diegetic music adds to the tension as the viewer became interested in the whether or not the character would die.
