FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE Dante’s Inferno uses the Terza Rima form of poetry!!! What this means is that the last word of the second line rhymes with the first and third of the next verse. I’m sure that sounds confusing, so allow me to elaborate using a section of Dante’s poem. 1When three shades turned together on the plain 2breaking toward us from the company 3that went on its way to torture in that rain 4They cried with one voice as they ran towards me 5“Wait, oh wait, for by your dress you seem 6A voyager from our own tainted country.” (pg. 142-143) Now I shall list the last words of every line: 1) Plain A 2) Company B 3) Rain A 4) Me B 5) Seem C 6) Country B Alright, so as you can plainly see, the pattern goes A B A B C B Ok, now time to talk about some FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE Metaphor: “And over all that sand on which they lay, or crouched or roamed great flakes of flame fell slowly as snow falls in the Alps on a windless day.”
