McVeigh Parker held their own Fencing Competition in August and had 8 teams of 2 using hand held tools only. Congratulations go to Mike Ford, who won again (clearly the man to beat), with a close 2nd going to Dan at Ring Fencing and a respectable 3rd place for Charlie Hubbard. See page 8 for more details.

GLEE was on our agenda a couple of weeks back and we went up for the day. I was a little bit disappointed with the event as it was held in 4 halls as opposed to the usual 10, however, it was extremely busy, with good quality visitors, so I hope you continue to support this event in the future. I know from our sister publication Farmersmart that the European Dairy Event has moved to the NEC next year due to very competitive rates, so perhaps there is room for GLEE to look at their pricing in order to encourage a greater number of exhibitors. We have also recently launched Fencing and Landscaping News. online where you can now down load the magazine. So far we have had. over 600 readers. ROLAWN TURF FOR SCHOOL PITCHES

The Bum factor Builders around the country are the butt of the joke with a new online competition.

A job-matching website is offering cheeky passers-by the chance to win cash by texting in photos of builder’s bums in their area.

Over 33,000 sq.metres of Rolawn’s Medallion® Turfmaster™ rolls have recently been used to relay three school sports pitches in Inverness, Dingwall and on the Isle of Skye. Cedric McMillan, Rolawn’s Sales & Marketing Director commented “Rolawn Medallion turf was selected due to its enhanced performance, superior wear and disease resistance. The large format 13m2 and 26m2 Turfmaster™ rolls were used due to the vast expanses to be turfed. This

reduced labour time and ensured rapid establishment in readiness for the start of the playing season” For further details contact Lorraine Willis at Rolawn Limited. Tel: 0845 604 6050 Email: lorraine.willis@ rolawn.co.uk

Each week, one bum-snapper will be awarded £20 and then at the end of October, every exposed builder gets a ‘crack’ at receiving the acclaimed ‘Best Builder’s Bum 2009’ award. “The builder’s bum is an iconic symbol of Britain hard at work,” says Kelly Sallows, founder of ejobdone.co.uk. “We thought it was high time we started celebrating it in all its glory.” Consumers can post a job for free on ejobdone.co.uk and then tradespeople and suppliers can

bid to do the work. “We’ve already had loads of people texting in photos of plumbers, roofers, mechanics and cntractors all with ample bottom cleavage,” says Sallows. “There are hairy bums, smooth bums, big bums, small bums and spotty bums. “However, we’ve had a real lack of sexy bums being sent in. All the girls here in the office would like to see some more yum bums.”

Scottish authorities waste millions A survey of Scotland’s local authorities has found that a minimum of £5 million of taxpayers’ money is needlessly wasted every year on the repair and maintenance of corroding steelwork. Twenty-eight of Scotland’s 32 local authorities responded to the survey, which was conducted by Highland, one of Scotland’s leading galvanizing and colour powder coating firms. Highland submitted a freedom of information request to every local authority, asking for information relating to the annual spend on the upkeep of various kinds of steelwork

including railings, fencing, street furniture, balustrades, playground equipment and internal steelwork in swimming pools. It was found that during 2008, the 28 local authorities spent nearly £5 million on the repair and maintenance of corroding steelwork. Highland argues that had the steelwork been treated correctly prior to the initial installation, then it would not require further treatment for up to 25 years. Based on the results of the survey, this would represent a saving of almost £117 million over a 25 year period.

Stunning summer for roofing company Architectural metal roofing and cladding company T R Freeman is celebrating a stunning summer, with news it has signed half a million pounds worth of new contracts. The Cambridge company, based near Cambridge United, has five new contract wins. They include a £150,000 new roof on a youth centre, and a new roof for a shopping centre. The contracts also include the first order for a new division set up by the company to supply single ply roofing. Gary Webb is the managing director of T R Freeman. He said: “The weather has been hit and miss this summer but that hasn’t affected our order book.

JAMES JONES & SONS LTD LAUNCH NEW WEBSITE

Success of LEAF International 2009 Due to the success of this year’s Leading European Architects Forum (LEAF International) which took place in Berlin earlier this month, a huge number of delegates have already rebooked to confirm their place at LEAF 2010.

The eighth annual LEAF was the best event to date featuring over 130 delegates from around the world. And with more than 450 formal business meetings plus numerous other networking opportunities LEAF

is carving its niche as the most important event for the architecture and construction industry. The event once again proved to be a great success with more than two thirds of this year’s attendees expected to rebook for next year’s LEAF which will be held in London. LEAF 2010 will take place on 8 - 10 September in London.

Wood for good campaign support At a successful event in London over 50 industry leaders were presented with a new campaign concept for wood promotion. The concept was well received and a range of companies confirmed they would be prepared to contribute funding.

“Wood for good’ already has a strong brand with target audiences and now it has come up with a fresh, focused and, above all, hardhitting campaign concept”, said architect Craig White, who chaired the event. “I believe we have the opportunity to convey a strong and positive message for wood and to

help promote market opportunities for timber businesses to exploit”. Participants in the event were given a brief background to recent developments with ‘wood for good’ why there was benefit in promoting a new carbon message, and then presented with an outline of how the new campaign could look, including how individual businesses who support the campaign could make use of the material in their own promotion. “Government is driving the carbon reduction agenda and a significant

stepping-up of activity is required – the carbon message is only getting stronger and this will feed in more and more to timber markets”, said Tim Rollinson, director general of the Forestry Commission and a director of wood. for good. Following the positive response at the event, wood. for good shareholders and the Timber Trade Federation will flesh out details for a new campaign in early 2010, and look to tie down funding, building on their own contributions. future training provision towards the needs of their business. Liz Pridgeon, Lantra’s Development Manager for Standards and Qualifications, said: “These events will improve businesses’ understanding of training and qualifications development and show how they can contribute to the future success of industry through creating a supply of people with the right skills to join tomorrow’s workforce.” The employer-led workshops will explore occupational standards,

qualification development, and apprenticeships giving participants an opportunity to learn more about the ways they can get involved. Michael Smith, Director of Policy, Research and Development at Lantra, said: “This is a great opportunity for businesses from the environmental and land-based sector to engage with Lantra and network with other employers. The events give participants the chance to learn about qualifications and training, how they can contribute to the process and the advantages training brings to

business success.” The events are free of charge and take place in Wiltshire on Tuesday 27 October and in Yorkshire on Wednesday 25 November. McVeigh Parker are delighted with Fencing competition at Burwarton Show This year’s Burwarton Agricultural Show saw over 20,000 people through the gates and a great fencing competition. Following two difficult years for the show committee, with last year’s show nearly cancelled due to the exceptionally wet weather and 2007 having to be cancelled because of the flooding at the site the organisers were in great spirits.

Mr Parker is seen presenting the prize of an engraved trophy to the winners. Mike Ford team wins again!

The show has been running annually for 110 years, with breaks during the world wars, and is enjoying increasing popularity year on year. The organisers have stuck to the show’s original style of a local show, run by a local committee whose formula continues to attract large crowds based on a true agricultural theme. The aims of the show in 1891, when the local agricultural society was formed, were ‘mutual protection against fraud and adulteration of manures and feeding stuffs, and a feeding system of cooperation in the purchase of manures’.

and just about anything on four legs, with a large crowd taking a keen and critical interest in all of th pedigree and commercial classes.

Livestock entries once again emphasised the quality of stock in the area with the best in cattle, sheep

Outside the main ring the Fencing Competition, sponsored by McVeigh Parker, was taking place. This was

also held in front of large crowds, many of who stayed for the full three hours of the competition. Unlike previous years, the day was hot and humid and the eight teams taking part managed to lose a good few pounds in honest sweat. Having drawn lots to choose which peg the team started from, it was pot luck as to which size boulders they came across. Teams travelled from as far afield as Devon, Hertfordshire and Staffordshire to try their skills and pick up major cash prizes. No mechanical tools were used, which made the crowd appreciate the level of skill and sheer hard work put in by the teams. Points were allocated

for various parts of the construction, the last on the list being the state in which the team left the fence line after 3 hours. There were points for finishing before the allocated time and when the three judges had finished inspecting the lines of fence and added the points together, two teams had exactly the same marks. The only difference was Mike Ford from Chumleigh, Devon had finished a few minutes before the second placed team Ring Fencing from Dorchester with Charlie Hubbard from Coventry a close third. Combilift - the Right Move for Howarth The Rochdale branch of Howarth Timber and Building Supplies has replaced a conventional sideloader with a 4-way Combilift forklift and is benefiting from increased storage capacity, more efficient handling procedures and safer operations.

Due to the large amount of stock carried at the branch, space saving storage is vital, and the Combilift’s multi-directional capability has enabled more stock per square metre to be accommodated. The old sideloader was large and cumbersome, and its high platform prevented the use of lower level storage, whereas the very low platform height of the diesel powered C4000 Combilift model has freed up considerable extra space near the base of the cantilever racking to store the 6m long, 3.5t packs of timber. The forklift is also very versatile and is used to offload from incoming HGV’s and reload a variety of product for customer delivery. Combilift 4-way forklifts are all designed and built in Monaghan, Ireland, where the company also has its HQ and R&D facility. The current

Combilift range now encompasses at least fifteen base models with capacities ranging from 2.5 – 14 tonnes, with LPG, diesel or AC electric power available. Combilift has won numerous awards for its products since the company was established in 1998, and there are now over 10,000 units in operation around the world. Combilift Ltd. Co. Ringing in the changes at Charlton’s If you went shopping to buy some steak (stick with me here, it will make sense), and none of the packages were labelled, you’d be far stretched to differentiate between the organic and the budget brands. In fact, you might only realise you’d bought something shoddy once you got home and cooked it, only to find it was all gristle and bone. Well perhaps timber stakes aren’t so different from their meaty namesakes? With all the mutterings surrounding inadequate treatments, rotting posts and sub-standard products, AJ Charlton & Sons have decided to do something about it – to not only make it known that their timber is top quality, but to ensure that their products are easily identifiable, both giving customers peace of mind and putting some weight behind their warrantee. Michael fills me in: “We’re now branding our Usage Class 4 product as Longlast, giving each and every post a logo and label to ensure it is traceable through the system. With each product having its own identity and date of manufacture, our customers really know what their getting – a product of supreme quality.” Michael continues: “Since treatment changed and chrome and arsenic have been removed from the chemical ingredients, the remaining copper isn’t sticking and we’ve seen with some materials, such as spruce, that it’s extremely difficult to treat it properly. However, with redwoods, the timber accepts the treatment far better making it a better quality material to use.” The team at Charlton’s promise to supply products made with timber that bears no question mark. As soon as it is cut, the redwood is then dipped into an anti-sapstain chemical, which protects against the bluestain and fungus which would attack and weaken the wood. The timber then goes through the drying process until it is at the recommended moisture content of 28%, before being treated for suitability for Hazard Class 4 usage.” Michael is passionate about Charlton’s standard of treatment, and 12

fencing news October 2009

the company is so confident about the quality of their products that they’ve backed everything up with a 15 year warrantee. Michael explains: “The new Longlast brand is geared towards getting a product that’s fit for purpose. Just looking at pile of timber isn’t enough to know what it is, who’s treated it and where it’s come from. That is why we’re giving ours an identity and setting it apart from the rest.”

Michael Charlton with Jon Thelwell

Not only is each post stamped, but for the stockists benefit, each pack will also have a label, as well as being given a load number, warrantee verification and Make Sure It’s 4 logo. But the efforts to raise awareness about Charltons’ products don’t stop there, with Michael employing the services of Jon Thelwell to help market and promote the changes, starting with the creation of a new Fencing & Timber catalogue. “In the current economic climate, contractors are going purely for price, not quality. A lot of people don’t realise about the treatment issues surrounding the industry and of the failures since the treatment changed. Contractors and their customers need a post that promises to last, and the aim of our brochure is to to let people know that this level of quality is out there and it’s guaranteed”, Michael says. This catalogue doesn’t just slap the products on the page, Michael and Jon have worked together to really inform customers about the products, their treatment and how much easier it is for them to buy from AJ Charlton & Sons. They have developed a core stock range and highlighted this development with a ‘stock flag’ which symbolises that the product is available off the shelf. An important change for the company is that they now deliver in part loads, making their products more available to smaller stockists and those without room to handle stock. This allows stockists to reduce inventory. What’s more, they can deliver fast, making life much easier for customers. Jon adds, “We’ve also included a

section in the brochure to show our selection of matching gates and fences – bringing the two sides of Charlton’s together.” Indeed, despite the name which lends itself specifically to gates, Charlton’s fencing reputation has gained a solid place in the fencing market with core range of palisade, post and rail, featheredge and hit and miss products which they sell to stockists throughout the UK, and into Europe too. So it comes as no surprise to learn that they are currently working on extending their range with new styles and designs, developing the products which they supply within the domestic, agricultural and commercial sectors – not to mention several Royal estates. And that’s not the only claim to fame, with AJ Charlton & Sons having recently supplied 400 metres of featheredge for the periphery of the new home of BBC Gardener’s World, Greenacre near Birmingham. Jon adds, “We also supply products to The National Trust, and the National Arboretum at Westonbirt.” The big push is working, with Charltons gaining more stockists and customers than ever before. Michael tells me, “We also have plans for a powerplant on site for the use of our biomass fuel and we are going to install more treatment tanks to

improve our efficiency.” Despite AJ Charlton & Sons being steeped in tradition, their finger seems to be well on the pulse. Having been trading for more than a century, the family-run business has stood the test of time by supplying products that are of a superb quality. Trying to promote a premium product is hard in the current climate. Spending an extra 5% on our Longlast product, customers can be assured that buying them won’t be a choice they regret ten years down the line,” Michael says: “It’s our job now to educate the industry about using the correct product for the appropriate usage, such as class 4 for ground contact. Stockists need to be aware, as do contractors and the public. The new brochure will go some way to correct this lack of awareness.” In the Fencing News office, we can’t help but agree. Ignorance isn’t bliss, and it’s the reputation of the entire industry which relies upon keeping every chain in the link well-informed and strong. And with top quality products like Charlton’s so readily available, there’s really no excuse. For more information... Call 01373 812521 or visit www.charltongates.co.uk

industry update

Bad year... or just head in the sand?

Latest Plimsoll study looks at what’s happening in the industry One out of every four companies in the UK Fencing industry is making a loss as the downturn continues to make life difficult. But how many of these 280 loss making companies have simply had a bad year and how many are burying their head in the sand is the subject of a new study. David Pattison, author of a new market report into company performance in the industry says, “Increasingly we are seeing companies making a loss for the first time in their history and I think they can rightly claim they are victims of difficult trading conditions. A quick refocus on profitability would ensure this an isolated occurrence – ‘the year the recession forced us into loss’” However, market conditions are a flimsy excuse for a band of serial loss makers that are prevalent in the market. Pattison explains, “Ninetynine companies are making a loss for the second, or even third year running. These companies are either blatantly undercutting the rest of the market to enhance or maintain market share or, more likely, have delayed making the painful decision more prudent companies have made recently. No one wants to trim costs, lay off staff, cancel dividend payments and the

like but carrying on regardless is fast becoming unviable. They can’t bury their heads in the sand any longer”. “I congratulate the management teams that have made the often difficult and unpopular decisions. They have cut their cloth according to the market conditions and as a result are more stable for it. Those failing to do so are running out of time and cash. Without a big increase in demand they cannot support their pricing strategy for much longer. Watch out for a number of failures in the coming months among the companies we have identified”. The new Plimsoll Industry Analysis – Fencing provides an intimate assessment of 799 companies in the market. It will tell you instantly which companies are pursuing a reckless strategy and who is getting it right. M&M Timber gets together with Hillhout Following a strategic review of its UK operations, Dutch-owned Outdoor Life Group has joined forces with Midlands based M&M Timber Limited to offer the garden and leisure industry a complete one-stop for all their timber, garden and leisure requirements.

The move, which means M&M Timber will now distribute the highly respected Euro brands Hillhout, Holgard and Outdoor Life Products throughout the UK, emphasises the total commitment of both companies to the garden and leisure industry and puts the new partnership at the head of an increasingly competitive market. “This is the biggest and most significant announcement we’ve ever made,” says Managing Director Nigel Poyner. “Alongside Hillhout, Holgard and Outdoor Life Products, M&M Timber now has the enviable position

Outdoor Life Group’s Managing Director Bert van Veldhuizen (Left) with Nigel Poyner, Managing Director, M&M Timber Limited (right)

of having a huge range of timber garden and leisure products that is unrivalled and quite simply second to none. It will, without doubt, have a far reaching impact on the UK market.” The garden and leisure sector currently accounts for more than a third of M&M Timber’s turnover. The company has succeeded in signing up well over 300 independent retail garden centres over the last two years alone and the number continues to grow. Many of M&M Timber’s stockists already sell Hillhout products. The association with Hillhout now means M&M Timber can offer its trade customers a ‘one stop shop’ in timber garden products, supplying everything from its ‘all British’ sourced and manufactured rustic range, to the exciting new luxury designs and ideas from Europe’s best, The Outdoor Life Group. Existing Hillhout customers

will also welcome the opportunity to rationalise their supply chain and take advantage of M&M Timber’s renowned delivery and service levels. Like M&M Timber, the Outdoor Life Group specialises in quality made products that give a new dimension to garden landscape design, with the luxury design-led offerings from Hillhout, the competitively priced Holgard range and a comprehensive line-up of buildings from Outdoor Life Products. A selection of these ranges will be displayed on M&M’s stand at this year’s GLEE.

Stocks of the Hillhout product range will be housed in a new warehouse development on M&M Timber’s 22 acre site at Clows Top near Kidderminster. health & safety

The reality of Health and Safety Peter Mepsted of PHP Health and Safety Ltd reports As a member of The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) I receive a monthly magazine which is filled with latest news, articles and a section entitled ‘In Court’. This section provides a précis of recent court cases and details the reason for the case and subsequent sentence. I have looked back over the last six months and have considered cases which could relate, in some way, to the fencing industry. The following are some of the cases and the sentences given: A metal treatment company sentenced to pay £733,000 in fines and costs after two workers died at a plant in Herefordshire. This was the second such incident in four years and the reasons were cited as failure to undertake a proper risk assessment and failure to adequately train staff. On both occasions inert gas had replaced oxygen in a confined space. The company was also cited as not having ensured that their audit process was sufficiently thorough. Fines and costs totalling over £9,000 were made against a metal fabrication company in the West Midlands - a worker suffered serious crush injuries after his hand was drawn into an unguarded spindle drill. The workman was wearing protective gloves, however whilst working the left hand glove came in contact with the drill head, dragging his hand into the machine. He suffered a broken wrist, thumb and dislocated shoulder as well as nerve and tendon damage. He was off work for over four months. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE)

prosecuted on the basis of failing to carry out a suitable risk assessment and for failing to adequately guard the machine. A member of the public was crushed to death in a warehouse yard after a lorry developed a fault with its brakes. The vehicle in question had a fault which temporarily locked its brakes but then released them after the driver had left to report the problem. Subsequently the unattended lorry rolled over the member of public, crushing him to death. The enforcing authority stated that the company had failed to provide suitable systems for the segregation of vehicles and pedestrians, failed to provide information, instruction or training for staff and visitors and, once again, failed to have robust risk assessments in place. In court the Company was fined £133,000 with costs of over £19,000. I could go on! Moving vehicles on site cause death to worker! Fifteen year old casual labourer crushed to death while demolishing a wall! Just over a year ago in my village, a farm worker lost a leg after he was run over by a forklift that he was standing behind. Again no systems were in place to segregate work areas and (I suspect) there was a lack of training for staff.

I have highlighted the serious cases as these are the ones that get reported, but what about the apparently minor cases such as hearing loss due to years of exposure to high levels of noise or vibration

Fatal accidents at two North Yorkshire farms less than three weeks apart have prompted a call to the agricultural community to use machinery only for its intended purpose.

My point to all this, is, that it can so easily happen to any business and the costs could be catastrophic. I have highlighted the statutory costs of these cases but do not have

Both accidents, at farms in Skipton and Thirsk just thirty miles apart, involved such machinery in near identical circumstances, with buckets coming loose from the main telescopic arm and striking people who were holding a post in place underneath.

causing ‘white finger’. What does seem to be clear is that many incidents appear to be avoidable and that, with a little more thought to assessing risk and implementing training, it is likely that the possibility of a serious incident could be dramatically reduced. Accordingly I would contend that the old saying ‘A stitch in time’ could be applied to health and safety and a little effective investment could save a lot of heartache. The problem is you won’t know the cost until it happens, best make sure it doesn’t happen then!

Fatal accidents involving Telehandlers The Health and Safety Executive and North Yorkshire Police are jointly warning farm contractors not to use telehandler machinery to drive posts into the ground.

If so, contact us.

But none of the above financial costs can equate to the human cost of, say, losing a husband, wife, son or other family member.

One very important point that I would make is, that there appear to be very few incidents related directly to the fencing and landscaping industries. Let’s keep it that way!

Are you compliant with health and safety legislation? Do you need practical, common sense guidance?

any information on the subsequent compensation awards, however they are likely to be substantial and (if a company or individual has been found guilty) are the insurance companies likely to pay out? – I wouldn’t be too sure on that one.

A 66 year-old woman died in Skipton, while a 22 year-old male lost his life in Thirsk. Both were local to their respective area. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances at each site, but officials are keen to stress that telehandlers are not designed for driving posts into the ground. “It is impossible to ensure that the post stays straight when a telehandler is used in this way,

and further fatalities are possible if people continue to enter the danger zone beneath the bucket to provide manual assistance,” commented Gill Spurrier, HSE head of operations for Yorkshire and the Humber. “If the bucket attachment is not properly engaged or becomes disengaged, the bucket can be dislodged by downward pressure on the post and may come loose completely – as happened at both Thirsk and Skipton. “Both tragedies were easily avoidable, and we strongly encourage others not to work in this way.” Chief Inspector Nick Warnes, of North Yorkshire Police, added: “Workers have a duty to look after their own health and safety when carrying out work of this nature, and we are keen to avoid any more accidents like this.” Both the HSE and North Yorkshire Police offer their sincere condolences to the family and friends of the victims. SiteProtect – appearing everywhere SmartPly’s new SiteProtect coated hoarding panel is being embraced by leading contractors and clients across the UK. It is a durable coated panel designed to save both time and money. The SmartPly OSB3 substrate is coated with a smooth heavy-duty exterior cross-linked polymer surface treatment, and was developed specifically for use in a range of applications from temporary site hoarding through to security installations. Major attractions are now using SiteProtect such as The O2 and Greenwich Peninsula in London, and in June demolition was begun in order to prepare a site for the new Ark Academy in Brent. Willmott Dixon won the £32 million contract to build the academy, comprising infant, junior and secondary schools as well as sports facilities for 1,600 pupils on one site, near the new National stadium at Wembley. The academy, designed by Studio E architects, will have as small a carbon footprint as possible and will have a phased opening from September 2010.

SiteProtect was selected for its precoated finish and local production and manufacture in Ireland. It is providing high performance and reduced labour costs for Bristolbased contractors who are using the hoarding for sites which are undergoing demolition in preparation for new social housing.

in Royal Business Park, near Canary Wharf.

In keeping with current construction methods working towards healthier environments, SmartPly SiteProtect is manufactured using zeroadded formaldehyde and a ‘zero voc’ (volatile organic compounds) coating. This means it is inert and ideal for internal as well as external applications, such as work at the internal reception and atrium area

The £4.4m new office complex Winnersh Triangle in Reading has a BREEAM rating and 26 per cent less carbon emissions than a standard office. Contractors turned to SmartPly’s SiteProtect for FSC certified site hoarding which was pre-coated, making it both cost and time effective.

A new development at NHS Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro is taking advantage of SiteProtect’s smooth, durable coating, which needs fewer coats of paint and gives a quality finish.

Taking it to Europe Northpoint Ltd in Dukinfield, Manchester has unveiled a bold expansion strategy for its perimeter systems coating business, matching quality and output expectations commonly found in Continental European fence coating plants in an attempt to strengthen its position as a key partner to the big players in the steel fence manufacturing industry, to take advantage of the European Mesh Fencing market. Northpoint’s position reflects continued investment in technology strengthening still further the company’s position since its management buyout in late 2007. Northpoint has diversified its range of service offerings and launched additional new products such as the Interpon D brand from Akzo Nobel which is backed by a manufacturer’s 30 year warranty, currently unrivalled within the fencing industry, and additional product liability insurance cover sourced by Northpoint for specific business partners. Philip Dawson, Northpoint’s Technical Director, says “Northpoint has been focused on providing a leading suite of services which include market

leading coating application services, logistical support and warehousing solutions as well as where required a fully managed logistical, galvanising and coating service. Thanks to our coatings application package we can’t be beaten on whole of life cost and our product range is second to none. The strategic targeting of the European market which has seen exports of our coating services through strategically important business partners such as Siddall & Hilton Products and Betafence into not only the UK market but also into Germany, Belgium and Russia is about showing we are serious about offering a leading unified product range backed by warranties and product liability insurances.”

The previous 12 months has seen increased market activity for Northpoint and its major business partners in pursuit of the European market. Indeed Siddall & Hilton Products have recently committed to improved productivity with the purchase and commissioning of their ATT126 – cut line wire fed machine, a multi-million pound investment for the Brighouse based company. The machine is able to produce mesh panels in as little as

12 seconds representing a step change in their manufacturing processes. Siddall & Hilton Products who maintain the very highest of manufacturing standards chose to partner with Northpoint Ltd on the basis of the two companies commitment to quality and service, both prospering as a result of the partnership. Philip Dawson adds “the driving force behind the strategic developments is making things as simple as possible for our business partners. Our business partners are more aware of the commercial benefits open to them from export markets but their customers are demanding finishes which meet internationally recognised standards for quality, service and logistics, a package which Northpoint is best placed to provide. We at Northpoint see the future as convergence of the European and UK market demands basing our service offering on what we see as ever increasing expectations from clients in terms of the robustness of the products, coatings provided and what we have in place to support the

products in service so that clients have absolute confidence in the products and services provided for the long term.” Northpoint have invested heavily in technology and people to date to achieve its current market leading position. However, the Board of Directors has committed further significant capital expenditure for 2009/2010 to maintain and enhance Northpoint’s position. A lot going on in the (Forest) garden An all out attack on the market place is where leading UK garden timber supplier Forest Garden is coming from judged on recent news. FSC certification, a new improved online ordering facility and an increase on its successful home delivery and garden building assembly are all measures undertaken that show this is by no means an operation which is prepared to stand still. The FSC certification is a vital part of Forest Garden’s armoury as John Gomersall, sales and marketing director, explains: ‘As the UK’s leading manufacturer and supplier we treat our environmental responsibilities with the highest priority. Whilst many timber product suppliers claim FSC Chain of Custody certification for their business we want to be clear that it is the actual certification that matters. All of our timber products now carry the FSC logo. We have worked closely with our raw material partners to ensure that FSC certified timber has always been our preference.’ The increase of home delivery and garden building assembly services

on higher value items is another important plank in the Forest Garden approach. The initiative is designed to leave retailers free to maximise on quick turnover, easy pick-up and impulse buys. All Forest Garden summerhouses are now available with free home delivery and the garden building assembly service launched earlier this year has been designed to complement that. All garden buildings, including sheds and summerhouses, are now offered with an assembly service. The new online facility Forest Connect

was launched last year exclusively for trade customers and has been a tremendous success. It allows retailers to review previous quotes and orders, and to view best selling lines, as well as communication with the relevant department within Forest Garden. Sarah Oates of Notcutts Garden Centres commented: ‘Since signing up to Forest Connect our ordering process is so much easier. It makes a real difference during busy times. The ability to check immediate stock availability, as well as being able to

track orders and receive confirmed delivery dates all helps to give our customers the best possible service levels.’ For more information... Gripple Selects Winners of Fencing Competition Hundreds of fencing contractors entered a competition this year run by Gripple, each with the chance of winning over £500 worth of fencing products. Torwood Fencing Company, Perry Landscape Services and BW Field & Partners were all selected as lucky winners, and each were presented with a selection of Gripple wire-joining products, as well as high quality fencing materials kindly provided by ArcelorMittal, McVeigh Parker and Tornado Wire. Karl Paget, of Torwood Fencing, is a long-time fan of Tornado Wire, having used both their Hi-Tensile Plus Titan and Hi-Tensile Plus Flex joints for years. Based in Stirling in Scotland, Torwood have had a busy year, utilising their in-house training programme to develop skills. Working in commercial, industrial and agricultural fencing, as well as timber, they have also used Gripple products in the past, but are new-comers to the Gripple T-Clip end-post terminator. Karl went on to say, “We haven’t had the chance to use them on a job yet,

20

but we’ve seen them around. They’re a fantastic idea and solution. I can see our guys really liking them, especially with the time and effort saved compared to tying off.” Perry Landscape Services are a Wiltshire company established by Dean Perry in 2002, and are involved in all aspects of landscaping. The year so far has proved to be a good one, as they are finding less people are moving and therefore choosing to spend money developing what they

already have. Dean said he is keen to try out McVeigh Parker’s XFence with Xtralife wire and the Gripple T-Clip. Hertfordshire-based BW Field & Partners, from their roots in farming, have now been in the contracting business for over forty years. Contractor Alistair White expressed how he is looking forward to using the Estate Brand 2Life HT Stockfence from ArcelorMittal. He went on to say, “One of the ways to help ensure profit is to become more

efficient. We always carry Gripples as they are excellent for fence repairs especially when used with the Gripple tensioning tool. They are excellent for quick joints when we are doing stock fencing, as there is no quicker and more efficient way of joining and tensioning.” For more information... visit www.gripple.com

Brett simplifies the buying process Brett Landscaping has released a condensed version of its contemporary, well-received “Gardens & Driveways” brochure. The 16-page “Driveways & Gardens” brochure is a pick-up-and-keep version aimed at giving customers an inspirational snapshop of products and ranges and has been designed to encourage them to seek out products at their local builders merchant.

During the autumn period there is an increased interest in driveways, so Brett Landscaping has incorporated more information about its block paving products at the front of the brochure. The magazine format follows Brett’s detailed research into consumers buying habits and is available to support merchants in the driveways season. Targeted at the chief decision maker, the layout appeals to women and it is more often than not women who make the aesthetic decision. The project is then taken further by visiting the builders merchant or talking to a contractor. Brett’s research also revealed that consumers can often feel overwhelmed

by too much detail or choice and therefore take longer to make a final decision. Speaking about the new publication, Bob Deller at Brett Landscaping comments; “We have created the new format based on the research that showed customers are often baffled by the array of products on offer. The new format is designed to help drive consumers towards making a purchase and simplifying the buying process.” “This new publication is another way in which Brett Landscaping is helping to support the merchants and encourage sales.” The “Driveways & Gardens” Product Summary contains attractive pictures of many of the products in the Brett Landscaping range and gives an overview of styles, textures and design options. Fence erectors are our key to success Chris Berry talks with Robin Douglas of JDR Fencing ‘Our business relies upon how well we perform on our contracts.’ That may well be a fairly normal statement uttered by many fencing companies, but for JDR Fencing, one of the largest fencing contracting operations in Scotland it is even more pertinent. Robin was trained as a civil engineer and then became a consultant in Glasgow, working with local authorities. With two other partners he was involved in a landscaping and environmental business which was purchased through a management buyout. Subsequently the three partners then set up JDR Fencing in 1993. Having started out as JDR Fencing in 1993 Robin Douglas and his colleagues have built a business that has seen a sevenfold increase

Robin Douglas

“...the way in which we always ensure an excellent performance is that we use only the best quality fencing erectors” in turnover since that time. It has seen Robin and his fellow partners transfer their original interests in another business to channelling all of their efforts into just one. ‘We now operate right across the Central Scotland belt from Glasgow to Edinburgh,’ says Robin. ‘And the way in which we always ensure an excellent performance is that we use only the best quality fencing

erectors. All of our erectors are sub-contractors. We have a small full-time team here at Hamilton and we don’t employ any salespeople so our fence erectors are our calling card and our representatives in the field. We stand or fall by their professionalism and they are one of the main reasons we have been so successful and have expanded our business greatly in the past 16 years.’

company profile Timber fencing and other timber products make up 98% of JDR Fencing’s work which is primarily in two main markets. ‘Our two largest markets, that make up 80% of our turnover, are in the new private housing sector dealing with most of the major house builders ; and also in the social housing sector with the Housing Associations, which has become an increasing part of our business in recent years. The increase in this sector has occurred at just the right time for us.’ ‘Whilst new home developers and social housing make up the greater proportion of our business we also sell to the general public. We stock a huge range of timber fencing, garden furniture, decking, pergolas and arches – and as well as using fully trained erectors we have also qualified for ISO9001 accreditation. High quality workmanship is our primary concern.’ Due to the large volume of quality treated timber JDR purchases they are able to supply at highly competitive prices. All timber is sourced from Scotland and their two main suppliers are Windymains in East Lothan and Cordiners Sawmills of Banchory.

JDR Fencing started out on an industrial estate in East Kilbride but has since shifted location over to Limekilnburn near Hamilton which offers far greater security for their impressive quantity and quality of stock. ‘Our array of quality timber products is very important to us, but it really is the professionalism of our fence erectors which is the reason behind our success. I spend a great deal of time ensuring that every one of our sub-contractors knows exactly the standards we require, and I train them accordingly. We are also members of the Fencing Contractors Association.’ For more information... Cow shed to Midlands domination Chris Berry talks with Dennis Baskerville of Grangewood Fencing have six depots. Back in 1978/79 we were slap bang in the middle of one of the worst times ever for getting a business going, but I was 19 at the time and more bothered about making it work than what was happening across the country.’

When Dennis Baskerville started out in business 31 years ago the economy was in a similar position to today. However, in that time he has built, maintains and is steadily growing Grangewood Fencing, which is now the Midlands largest independent supplier of fencing materials. ‘My first premises were a cow shed in Cannock,’ says Dennis. ‘We now

Dennis’ original business was in contracting and the manufacture of fence panels, nearly all for the domestic market. His next move was to buy Grangewood Garden Centre, where the business name today comes from. ‘I needed somewhere to trade from, to go into the retail side. I used what had been the garden centre car park. The garden centre was not in a healthy state when I bought it, but I turned it around and then sold it three years later. It remains my best

deal to this day.’ The sale of the garden centre saw Dennis move to Netherseal, near Swadlincote, which became the first of the now six branches. ‘Today’s business is made up predominantly of contractor supplies. That accounts for around 70% of our turnover with domestic, agriculture and commercial business. We’re there right through from the commercial contractor to the man who wants just half a dozen panels.’ Grangewood Fencing holds large stocks of fencing, timber and concrete products at each of its six depots and Dennis has a team of around 25 staff which includes a manager and yard staff at each depot, plus a delivery team. He has been pleasantly surprised with this year’s performance so far and is very much looking to the future. ‘We are up 2% on last year’s sales at this time. Personally I would have been happy, given the climate, getting within a short distance away from last year’s sales, so I’m comfortable with our position at the moment. Because we went into this recession without any borrowing we have also managed to purchase at the right time. We made one significant purchase just before

Christmas last year and another a month ago.’ Dennis opened up the sixth Grangewood Fencing site earlier this year at Hixon. It was a strategic move. ‘We already owned the site as I had wanted a better presence in the Staffordshire area. Our research shows us that customers will only travel up to 10-12 miles for supplies so we needed this one. It’s already proving us right.’ Dennis is married to Nicola and they have two daughters, one of whom is at Cambridge University and the other is in retail. Dennis’ sister, Janet Morris, looks after the accounts side of the business. For more information... Family values + professional approach = winning team Chris Berry talks with Karl Paget of Torwood Fencing, Stirling Thirty years ago a new fencing company was formed by Roy Paget in Scotland. Today it is one of the leading independent family-run fencing businesses in the country and now employs a team of 20 at its base on Thistle Industrial Estate in Stirling.

Karl Paget

‘We’re now approved by a number of local authorities, the ministry of defence, several blue chip companies, the Scottish Prison service, housing associations, NHS Trusts and the Scottish Executive,’ says Karl Paget, Roy’s son who has been involved with the business from his school days and is MD-elect, as Roy looks to hand over the reins in the future. ‘Whenever I had any days off from school I was always working for my father,’ says Karl. ‘I worked on the tools for about six years, spent time in the office and eventually came into the running of the business full-time. I later became a director of the company, which is my role at present.’ Today’s business is largely made up of commercial and industrial fencing including anti-scale, acoustic barriers, electrified security, automated and manual gates and play/ball stop fencing. There is a great deal of construction company work and an ever-increasing amount of school work. The industrial and commercial side makes up around 70% of Torwood’s overall business with the rest coming from timber fencing both for housing associations and agriculture.

‘This year’s trade has seen panel systems becoming much more popular than palisade. Our customers seem to be going for open mesh systems a little more, on the basis that it seems more pleasing on the eye, from the feedback we have received. The 6mm and 8mm diameter wire has gone very well.’

Karl believes that it is the family ethos combined with a highly professional approach to business that has become the winning combination for Torwood, seeing them increase turnover greatly since Roy first started out in 1979. ‘Our senior foreman, Billy Allison,

has been with us for 25 years and he helps me supervise the teams. He has four foremen under him. Our family connections within the company are a measure of just how strong the links are in the team as a number of the younger men who work here now have followed their father’s footsteps in working with us. company profile Acoustic fencing is becoming more popular year on year and Torwood have found that to be very much the case in their business. ‘It’s all about noise pollution and making sure that everyone does what they can. I wouldn’t say it forms a large part of our trade at the moment but it is certainly a growing area. The number of customers who are requesting it are very much on the increase.’

Roy and Karl Billy’s sons is on the team too.’ ‘We pride ourselves on a really personalised, one-to-one service offering skilled, reliable contractors. trainers and experts, so that our staff attain qualifications such as SVQ Fencing levels 2 and 3 as well as FISS/CSCS accreditation. That is what gives us the edge over much of our competition and ensures our customers of the reliability and high standards they have come to expect from us.’

Karl has been involved with both Lantra and the Scottish Fencing Federation, for a short time as chairman prior to the organisation merging with the FCA. He tells of the one area that has increased on his staffing and cost base more than any other. It will come as no surprise to any other reputable fencing contractor. ‘Health and Safety regulations have brought on so much additional

paperwork that where we used to have myself and one other part-time member of staff in the office we now have myself and three full-timers.’ When he’s not in the office Karl is a keen sportsman and rural pursuit enthusiast. ‘I’ve recently taken up golf and I have always enjoyed fishing. When I was a boy I took part in clay pigeon shooting, but I now go game shooting regularly. I also enjoy ski-ing.’ Torwood Fencing has become one of Scotland’s most reputable contractors and Karl intends that they should remain that way. They work throughout Scotland and are always happy to hear from anyone looking for the best in security fencing. For more information... Karl Paget TORWOOD FENCING CO. LTD. Ark & amphitheatre for playground Tanalith-E helps Shaftesbury Primary School’s children play safely Tanalith E wood preservative has been used to create two striking new wooden playground buildings for children at the Shaftesbury Primary School in East London. The school’s playground is now home to a wooden amphitheatre, which allows children to sit shaded from the sun and rain, and a wooden ark large enough for children to play inside. The ark and amphitheatre are built with Hoppings Softwood Products’ Q-Deck branded timbers, which are supplied pressure-treated with Arch Timber Protection’s Tanalith E wood preservative to impart a significantly extended service life. The buildings, which were completed in spring 2009 and constructed on-site by contractors PETNE, were inspired by Shaftesbury Primary School’s head teacher, Mr Geoff Hadlow, and the designs were based on his original ideas and drawings. “We created the buildings to give our pupils two new areas of interest in the playground, and to be educational as well. We are very proud of our ark and

amphitheatre, and so are our parents and pupils,” says Mr Hadlow. “We collaborated closely with PETNE, who have helped a great deal with improvements at the school, to achieve the most suitable designs for the buildings, and we think they did an excellent job to produce two marvellous bespoke constructions.” Both of the buildings were created from Hoppings’ Q-Deck timbers and, in the case of the ark, a steel frame. Because the ark needed graceful curves along its length, the construction process even involved the building and running

of a steaming chamber, on-site, to create the timbers of the ship. With a few varnished hardwood trimmings and animal profiles to finish off the project, the ark sits resplendent by the gates of the school.

Across the school yard, in a previously unused corner and beneath a historical brick chimney of the old factory next door, sits the L shaped amphitheatre. It is also built entirely from Hoppings’ Q-Deck components and has three tiers of seats and a roof for shelter. The amphitheatre provides the added benefit of undercover seating for

Because the timber has been industrially pressure treated with Tanalith E wood preservative, these two buildings will really stand the test of time, leaving a lasting impression on children and adults alike.

The school plans to add an underground train, using the same treated timber, later in 2009.

Grand designs from iron gate specialists CDI bring history back to life at Aynhoe Park A 12-foot wide set of iron gates is about to be fitted at the entrance to 17th century Aynhoe Park designed by Sir John Soane and landscaped by Capability Brown six miles from Banbury on the borders of Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire. The gates are the work of Terry Harwood, Joe Page and Stuart Makin, a team of young blacksmiths employed at Cotswold Decorative Ironworkers, a firm which Hughie Powell has run since the 1980s and is based in the village of Stourton, near Shipston-upon-Stour, Warwickshire. The three blacksmiths have developed a reputation for intricate craftsmanship on heritage projects that include beautifully finished and high grade iron fencing for organisations like the National Trust. Hughie and his blacksmiths Terry, aged 24, Joe aged 25 and 22-yearold Stuart are kept increasingly busy these days manufacturing entrance gates, parkland fencing and ornamental bridges for some of the country’s big estates. Terry, who has worked at CDI for seven years and Joe are qualified blacksmiths but Stuart is about to undertake a three-year National Diploma at Hereford College having recently completed a course at the Moreton Morrell campus of Warwickshire College. Terry says: “We’re not interested in the light cheap and cheerful products that are powder-coated and in three years need replacing because they are cracked. We specialise in things that you only buy once, but they are not only pretty to look at....the fencing for example is designed to last forever. Hughie added: “The gates for Aynhoe Park, an intricately crafted bridge and examples of our range of fencing and tree guards were star attractions in the summer at the Game Fair at Belvoir Castle. “Having such magnificently crafted pieces of work on show brought many visitors to our stand and we are now talking to potential clients who need high quality workmanship at a realistic price.

“Much of the work we are doing requires completely accurate historic designs to replicate original parkland fencing and gates. Aynhoe Hall and estate was bought in 2006 by the entrepreneur James Perkins and is open to the public by appointment only to see his world class plaster cast collection. A former record producer and music events organiser, Mr Perkins has lived there for three years - transforming Aynhoe Park from apartments back into a family home, in a multi-million pound project. Mr Perkins’ property company has undertaken several similar restoration projects such as Dowdeswell Court and Howsham Hall over the past few years and developed a reputation for returning run down institutional buildings into national heritage treasures. Hughie said: “James commissioned drawings for new gates at Aynhoe Park and we followed this design, adding some features in our own interpretation, which have enhanced the finished project. “A shield bearing the coat of arms of the Perkins family is also going to be welded onto the frame and the whole thing should look incredibly spectacular.” Robert Peace, project director of GL50 Properties said: “I once worked in the architectural steelwork business and it was a pleasure getting back into the workshop with Hughie’s blacksmiths - where we came up with the right design for the project which looks magnificent. “The previous coach gates were removed during the Second World War during Lord Beaverbook’s procurement of iron and steel for tanks, guns and aircraft. “However, they were never melted down and they were found in the 1970s in a scrap yard in Banbury. They were not the originals and we think Hughie’s gates are nearer to the original 17th century design - but his are probably more elaborate. “We have built new and stronger

Batsford bridge with Hughie posts and automated the gates - so all in all it is a project costing around £40,000, but we think it puts Aynhoe Park into the historic context it deserves.” Other recent CDI clients include parkland fencing and elaborate ornamental bridges for the National Trust at Crom Demesne estate in Co Fermanagh, Batsford Aboretum,

Gloucestershire, Abbots Ripton Hall, in Huntingdonshire and Oxford Castle. Hughie Powell, Based at Marsh Farm, Stourton, Shipston on Stour, Warks CV36 5HG Tel: 01608 685124 Email: enquiries@ cd-ironworkers.co.uk

NEW UPDATES FOR YARCOMBE

Victoria Poolman travels to Hinton St. George to meet Keith Madge, manager of Yarcombe Woodland Products Keith Madge has been a busy boy, by the looks of things. Since the Fencing News last caught up with him back in October 2007, the site of Yarcombe Woodland Products has transformed, with a brand new 650 square foot showroom\office (clad in timber from their own woodland), new machinery and a complete reorganisation of the yard. “We decided it was time to improve the facilities for our customers and contractors, so we got the local builder involved to construct this new development, where the office and showroom are now located,” Keith tells me. The building adds the comfort element that most timber yards lack, providing an attractive finish to the site, which is situated up in the heart of Somerset. Sadly, it’s not all been good news for Yarcombe Woodland Products, with the sad loss of owner Graham Evans. However, the company remains in the family with Graham’s daughter

and son-in-law, Carol and Edward Ruell, now having ownership of the business - and they are happy for Keith to continue his good work:

give an excellent standard of customer service, and that’s why when the chips are down, they always come back to us.”

“It had always been Graham’s dream to build this,” he says, looking about the new building, “He really wanted to develop this place and it’s a shame he hasn’t seen all the improvements we’ve made.”

Though trade and domestic sides of things haven’t been bountiful for the company, their agricultural products are more than making up for the shortfall. As Keith says:

Keith has the figures to back this statement up, with sales doubling in the seven years he’s been manager, and profits quadrupling. He’s clearly very proud of what he’s achieved, and quite rightly so. “It’s all about having the right attitude. Through the recession, trade has been down and a lot of our competitors have found that they went wrong by taking business for granted when times weren’t so hard. “With the problems we’ve seen in timber treatment, the last couple of years have really set us apart from other suppliers as we buy in untreated timber and do the job ourselves, so that we can guarantee it is done properly.” Having used Arch treatments for four years now, Keith is a sworn devotee of their products and is happy to be in the position where he can control the quality of what he sells. Despite times having been tough, he’s held onto all his six staff, continuing with training and preparing for when business picks up, which it looks like it already has done given the number of comings and goings in the yard during our meeting. “That’s another area we’ve focused on – ease of accessibility. We’re just putting the final touches to a new car park at the front of the site, where we’ll also have a display area for panels, gates and outdoor furniture

– which is a sector we’re looking to expand upon.” With his background as a health and safety quality assurance manager, Coventry-born Keith certainly has his finger on the pulse at Yarcombe Woodland Products. His approachable manner and genuine consideration for customers and employees makes the working day far easier, I have no doubt. Six POSTSAVER posts a minute to match demand Postsaver recently launched their new highthroughput Pro-Mill application machine at Saltex. However, as it was too large for the stand visitors were shown the versatile lowcost Pro-Contractor machine. While this mobile machine will sleeve between 60 and 120 posts an hour - in a yard or in the field - the static Pro-Mill will sleeve 6 posts a minute. With very few moving parts to break down, this rugged machine will keep up with the busiest mill. You can see a video demonstration of machine application at www.postsaver.co.uk/ trade. “We had over 250 serious visitors at Saltex, and a lot of people who came especially to meet us and get a closer look at the Postsaver system,” said Richard George, Director, from his base in Upton-upon-Severn, Worcestershire. “And as a result

we already have a number of new Postsaver stockists.” “We heard some dreadful stories from fencing contractors, of posts that had failed in three years - and in one case the fence survived only twelve months from installation before collapsing!” he continued. “There is no question of pointing the finger at contractors or their suppliers,” he emphasised, “We are all bound by the same legislation regarding preservative.” Postsaver was originally designed fourteen years ago to lengthen the life of traditional fenceposts. Inventors Richard and Jim George had no

crystal ball and no way of knowing that their product would become so needed after the 2004 EU Directive.

There is no doubt that the industry has been changed by the new legislation, and there’s a need to move forward and work out solutions to these new problems. One major stockist says: “Every post that goes in the ground will end up with a Postsaver sleeve.” And another: “Postsaver is very well received by customers, and is taken

up by everyone I offer it to.” The system is not only effective, carrying a 25-year guarantee, but also cost effective - based on fourteen years with not a single post failure and extensive independent research. A view from the top (of Kent)

Victoria Poolman travels to Maidstone to meet Kym and Sean McMillan of Boxley Timber and Fencing Supplies Ltd Right in the middle of the Kentish countryside, perched on top of a hill, stands Boxley Sawmill. And for anyone who’s made it up the undulating windy roads to get here, a stunning view awaits - not just of the landscape facing the site, but with their newly-erected pine log cabin being the focal point of the yard and a striking display of summerhouses and sheds, it’s certainly a site to behold. Boxley Timber started out eleven years ago, with Kym and Sean McMillan at the forefront. But far from being a new business, Kym’s family have been here since 1971, when her father Jim and his brother Charlie set up a sawmill and tree surgery business as J&C Dowle. In 1988 the brothers parted company, with Jim taking on two new partners to keep the business going. Five years on, Kym and Sean joined the ranks for the next five years, before starting Boxley Timber in 1998, with assistance from Jim, and Chris and Aidan Milner-

Moore of Anglian Timber. With Kym having been Jim’s secretary for a number of years and Sean’s experience as a carpenter and joiner, the running of the business came naturally.

Kym and Sean

Now providing fencing, decking, sleepers and machined logs to both the domestic and trade sectors, business is doing very nicely indeed. Kym tells me, “We specialise in gate making, and we’re known for our waney lap panels, which are of an extremely good quality: pressure treated and made on-site.” Another area the couple have recently seen an increased amount of interest is the chestnut fencing, which is manufactured on site and also purchased locally from Torry Hill. In

the early days, Jim and Charlie were coppicing up to 60 acres each year, which Kym and Sean saw reduce significantly over time. However now, with the realisation that chestnut is both the environmentally friendly and economic choice, sales are on the up.

Kym adds, “We’ve also been focusing on our sheds and summerhouses, which are going down very well as it suits the market and they are less labour intensive to sell, which is good considering there are only the four of us.”

Despite jitters of what threat the economic slow-down would hold for Boxley, Sean and Kym inform me that according to the news, we’re officially out of recession, and they are more confident about the future of the company than ever.

As a family-run business, the couple’s objectives aren’t overly ambitious. They have no desire to add more branches to their name or mass recruit, and they are more than happy with keeping the company small so as to ensure the personal and professional service for which they are renowned.

Sean says, “We’d just built this new cabin [ninety square metres of stunning Swedish pine] when mutterings started about the recession, and we were both a little anxious. But as it turns out, we’ve done fine so far, and though the trade side has tailed off a little, the domestic side of things has really picked up.”

Kym adds, “It’s always been important to us to have a good standard of customer care, it makes the job better for us to know that people who come to us go away happy. “Chris always says, ‘keep it small, don’t get too big for your boots’ because

it’s important for us to maintain the personal relationships we have with people.” Sean continues: “Saying that, we still want to grow and develop so we continue to welcome new customers. We’re surrounded by land up here and we did consider buying a bit extra as we need to increase our storage area, however upwards is the answer for now with racking following soon.” It’s a perfect set up, with one half of the cabin belonging to Boxley Timber and the other to J Dowle’s fencing erection service, run by Kym’s cousin, Barry Drew. Sean says, “Barry often gets enquiries for DIY and we get them

for erecting, so we work together.” With Kym’s dad still owning the premises and acting as landlord, he still has a strong presence on-site which is a good job, considering Sean still gets people coming in and asking for Jim, despite the fact he has now retired. Even though the family has been here for nearly forty years, Kym and Sean have put in a lot of work to get the place to where it is today. Dealing with a different kind of trade, it’s been a hard slog to get where they are today. As Sean tells me:

and local authorities, and have a lot of repeat business. All that hard work has paid off now as many of our customers appreciate our personal approach and friendly face” Delivering to around a 30 mile radius, they manage to keep everything covered with Martin Benton as their delivery man and Mike “Biff” Griffiths taking care of the manufacturing side of things. It certainly seems like a fantastic set-up.

As I leave Boxley Timber, I compare my journey up with Kym and Sean’s struggle to get to the top. But now, having gained a fantastic position in the marketplace and with the recession (hopefully) tailing off, they can enjoy the view... with all of Kent at their feet. company news

McVeigh invite us to the races (but doesn’t gamble) The Fencing News was treated to a day at the races last month courtesy of McVeigh Parker, but rather than the event being one big jolly, the company had organised a number of speakers and presentations to not only discuss timber treatment, but also show us their super-strong new XFence.

The first seminar was given by two doctors from Kora-Holzschutz (the German company responsible for treating McVeigh’s timber), who gave an in-depth presentation highlighting the benefits of their preservatives, explaining the science of treating timber and the importance of Hazard Class 4. Their treatment process is clearly rigid, kiln-drying redwoods to a moisture content of less than 28%, before treating with Kora CCON to the required retention levels - thus providing a product with longevity guaranteed. This led us onto the unveiling of the exciting new product range from McVeigh, which takes full advantage

of the meticulous treatment process previously discussed. Two speakers from New Zealand’s Euro Corp travelled across from the Kiwi isle to unveil the new brand from McVeigh with a superhero name to live up to its super-strength.

The XFence has been tested in harsh conditions and, coupled with Xtralife coating, is tough enough for all applications. What’s more, they’ve got the stats to back it up: with the trademark stiff-stay Xknot locking the fence’s horizontal and vertical wires together, making it 24% stronger than any other of its kind. Long-lasting, smooth and strong, these thousands of tiny knots make the XFence perfect for a number of uses: it’s been created to not only to fill a large gap in the marketplace, but also designed with affordability in mind. Due to the elasticity of the fence, it can be spaced with intervals of up to 6m, and as it’s easily erected too, that’s a saving on both materials and labour.

The XFence Predator fencing, with its one-piece vertical wire seems to be an altogether stronger, tougher fence which provides the solution for a number of problems, with the ring fence preventing the risk of livestock coming into contact with badgers – assisting in the fight to stop the spread of TB.

It’s easy to see McVeigh are extremely proud and confident of the new brand, and it’s being unveiled at a time when a stronger product - which requires little manpower to erect - is worth its weight in gold. Despite this being a day for betting, McVeigh certainly aren’t taking a gamble – offering customers an HC4 product that’s primed for ground contact, and backed with a 15 year guarantee. After the presentations were over, we were all treated to an afternoon of racing (so yes, I suppose it was a bit of a jolly...) The day went very well indeed, and despite going home with

empty pockets, Westbank Timber Sales Director Lee Proctor sums up the general consensus: “McVeigh Parker are certainly raising the bar in agricultural fencing and although from a timber background, I was highly impressed by the X-Brand wire range of products that they are selling alongside the HC4 posts.” Congratulations to McVeigh for their new brand: the odds are on and XFence is sure to be a winner. company profile

Where farming and fencing comes together … Terry Charles visits Park Timber in Shropshire Change can bring new challenges to companies and can sometimes leave them wondering if it wouldn’t have been better retaining the status quo. However, in the case of Shropshirebased fencing supplier Park Timber Ltd, the idea of moving things around, by owner Sandy Walker, brought about a valuable addition to the domestic and agricultural fencing supply network of its own rural county and those that border it. Just over six years ago Sandy was successfully running his farm near the village of High Ercall. Looking to the future he could see the steady decline in the farming industry and how it would affect the way he earned his living. As a result he decided to look around and see what he could do by way of producing a second income. What he came up with was a more than suitable alternative and both his

48

fencing news October 2009

farming interests and his fencing supply company now run side by side and complement each other very nicely. Owning a farm meant that Sandy had plenty of space to be able to do something different if he could come up with the right idea. He contacted

another farmer, in Devon who was already successfully running a fencing company from his farm. From what he learned he then looked at the potential market in Shropshire and the surrounding counties. The way forward became very obvious to him

and Park Timber was born. Once Sandy established his new business and allocated farm space to it he saw a resurgence of the farming industry and instead of being faced with the decision to have to pick the best of the two businesses he soon

company profile found himself in the nice position of needing to run both of them side by side and watch them prosper. When Park Timber was born back in 2003 the idea was to have a company that supplied timber decking and related products and go for a ‘niche’ market, but as the customer base developed he was soon being asked for various treated and untreated fencing products to complement the decking stock he kept on site. It soon became very obvious that the company would need to expand its core product range and move towards being a ‘one stop shop’ for anyone requiring fencing in the surrounding areas. Sandy was also receiving enquiries for fencing panels and in his usual unique way he quickly solved that problem. When Park Timber had started he had employed a man building sheds which he sold alongside the decking, so he used him to produce a range of fencing panels and trellis to go alongside the general fencing stock and very quickly found himself managing a large and varied stock of fencing lines. The customer base increased rapidly as word spread around the local area that there was a reliable stockist nearby where you could get just about everything you required and soon the portfolio of people they supplied expanded to encompass a large amount of landscapers, builders and the general public as well as a few of the local farmers. Today Park Timber stocks just about everything anybody undertaking a fencing project could require and its stock range runs from posts (both square and round) to timber for the building trade and just about everything in between including sheds, fencing panels and trellis, sheet material, gates, furniture and fittings for gates and wire. They deliver into the Shropshire and Staffordshire area on a regular basis and also into the Eastern parts of

Wales using a 3.5 tonne and a 7.5 tonne truck, and employ four people on site. The stock and business now takes up about two acres of Sandy’s farm and he can see it expanding further in the future. With the demands of his farm Sandy decided in March this year to take on a manager for the fencing business and he was fortunate in finding Robert Blackburn. Robert had worked and managed for several large multinational and independent builders merchants and knew the fencing and building trade inside out. The arrangement suited both men as Sandy was free to look after the farm and Robert quickly fitted into the general scheme of things at Park Timber and has already proved a huge asset to the company. Robert has great plans for the future of the business and sees a lot more opportunities to expand the domestic market, and particularly the agricultural fencing side, of the company. At present the biggest project he has on the go is the launching of a new website to show the company’s full range of goods and services. Sandy is very well known in the local area, which helps his business a great deal, and the company sponsors Shrewsbury Rugby Club. From the seed of an idea to help out in harder times Park Timber has grown into a credible and forward thinking company which is well worth talking to if you are after fencing stock in Shropshire and surrounding areas. timber update

Independent Quality Schemes for Wood Preservation

Recent discussions around timber failures have been at the forefront in the UK industry over the last year or so. It is important that we recognise that there are many factors in the process from tree to post that influence the end quality. The felling and milling, storage and stock management, drying process, treatment process, storage again and finally installation all play a part in the quality of the finished product. It is also very important to say that there are many UK companies who are using their own quality scheme in order to provide their customers with a finished quality product; and in doing so, are working hard to raise standards. These concerns are not unique to the UK and, in fact, discussions about what to do about these factors started in other European countries many years ago. As a result countries such as Sweden, Germany and France (plus many others) have produced government-backed Quality Schemes

50

fencing news October 2009

operated by independent authorities. These authorities have the remit to independently test, monitor and manage their license holders. Throughout mainland Europe, companies operating within these countries have seen clear and open guidelines on treatment and independent testing and monitoring all towards producing a ‘mark’ of confidence within that timber industry. It has been seen that, with good promotion of these schemes, the treater, the merchant and indeed the end user recognise these ‘marks’. Consequently this has given timber treatment a recognisable badge of confidence within those markets, clear quality schemes and good pricing.

timber update recommends pine for ground contact as it is readily available and is routinely kiln dried before treatment. This combination has helped the NTR provide a scheme that is both suitable and relatively easy to adopt in their home market producing quality products. It is this complete process, the permeable species, kiln drying and a rigorous quality scheme, that produces high quality products and confidence in the timber. In Germany the RAL standard also allows for spruce in ground contact although the warranty is only for 10 years but this does demonstrate that UK-grown spruce can be treated to a high standard as long as all factors leading to the final product are controlled and monitored. These schemes are marked as ‘NTR’ in Sweden, ‘RAL’ in Germany and ‘CTBA’ in France. Octowood and Bitus are examples of NTR licence holders in Sweden and Klenk in Germany adhere to the RAL scheme. All these schemes have certain criteria including published retentions, to meet before they licence the treater to say they are operating within the set guidelines. They can then badge-up all their treated wood that conforms to this scheme. This timber consequently can be bought and sold in the confidence that the

timber will meet its desired life span or indeed warranted life span. In Sweden, which is the most rigorous quality mark to meet in the world, all timbers badged or marked to their scheme will have an automatic 20 year warranty. One important factor that has helped these companies meet their national scheme requirements has been their choice of preservative. When it comes to performance of treated wood, preservatives will only work where they are present. This aspect of

performance can be designed into a product by the use of additives to aid penetration and the whole structure of the formulation will determine the uniformity of preservative distribution in the sapwood i.e. predictable ratios of active ingredients throughout the treated zone. Wolman’s CX range is designed to perform well in both regards and this, combined with a range of other useful features has been key to its success particularly in Sweden. In

In the short-term it seems the UK market is a long way off adopting a similar scheme but for those who are interested in achieving the best quality treatment possible Wolman can offer advice and support to maximise the potential of UK-grown timbers. contractor

Set up for the future in East Riding Chris Berry talks with Gary Atkinson of Kiplingcotes Eight miles might not seem far by car but it was enough to give East Riding-based Gary Atkinson his first step into fencing contracting in his own right seven and a half years ago. ‘Oliver Heywood of Shiptonthorpe set me on my way,’ says Gary, whose business now trades as Gary Atkinson & Sons Fencing Services, with one of his sons, Anthony, now a partner in the company. ‘It was Oliver

who gave me my first commitment to work with eight miles of fencing. This was my first big job and I will always be grateful for the faith he showed in me.’ Gary had worked for well-known agricultural contractor Richard Wastling for a number of years and moved over from Thirtleby in Holderness to Market Weighton where he became farm foreman at Houghton Hall Estate.

‘When I started in fencing contracting my brother Eddie was with me. We worked well together, and then Anthony became involved.’ Today the business is run by both Gary and Anthony with Gary’s wife Valerie looking after the bookkeeping and accounts. ‘Our business has grown very much since I started out in 2003. It has enabled us to get better rigged up

year on year. We now have our own specially-manufactured heavy duty post knocker, which was manufactured by Adam Garside of AWG Fabrications of Millington Heights. It’s our third post knocker and our best yet. We also use a Quickfencer on the front of our MBTrac1000 which we purchased from Scrutons.’ As Gary’s customer-base has grown he has attracted a number of well-

known names in the agricultural and rural world who he works for regularly. ‘There’s always maintenance and replacement work to undertake, as well as completely new customers. Houghton Hall Estate, Londesborough Estate, Dalton Estate and Warter Priory Estate are all very good customers, as well as leading local farmers like Robert Rook of Market Weighton.’ Gary and Anthony specialise in agricultural and equestrian fencing and all of their work currently is in timber fencing.

‘The biggest part of our work is in agricultural stock fencing, netting and barbed wire fencing, followed by post and rail. We undertake a great deal of rabbit netting and poultry fencing also.’ Two of Gary’s sons, Anthony and Jamie, who is still at school, have recently been successful in young farmers’ fencing competitions – so it looks as though the company will be in safe hands for many years to come. ‘They won as a 3-man team in a Spring fencing competition at Swanland representing Market

Weighton YFC, and then came 2nd in the Northern Area competition at Thirsk, which saw them qualify for the national finals at the Royal Show,’ says a proud father. ‘They took part along with their friend Richard Elvidge. Anthony is also set to become the chairman of Market Weighton YFC soon.’ Gary was born at Elstronwick, deep in the heart of Holderness in the East Riding of Yorkshire. He and Valerie have five offspring – Christina (22), Anthony (19), Timothy (17), Jamie (15, going on 16), and Benjamin (13). Gary’s other interests include ferreting, with Anthony and Jamie.

The company is well-set to continue growing, and with what seems a possible ready-supply of sons this could well be a family business that runs for many years! For more information... Calders strikes up special deal for NFU members

Calders & Grandidge have recently teamed up with sister company Jewson to offer advantageous rates to the NFU’s 180,000 members. The products on offer to the NFU include C&G’s range of Osmose Naturewood treated 5 bar, Stallion and horned gates, and a range of pressure creosoted post and rail fencing. Pressure creosoted fencing is still much preferred by the equestrian and general livestock markets as it is much less susceptible to damage through chewing etc. Indeed creosote is the oldest established and most effective and trusted wood preservative, specified by the UK’s utilities and rail networks for their wood poles and railway sleepers. These markets form an important part of C&G’s portfolio – where some 60,000 plus wood poles

are supplied every year from their Boston facility

Pressure creosoted post and rail

Pressure creosoted fencing is also permitted for highways use, and although significant volumes are used in Ireland, UK specifiers tend to prefer the green treated option. Details of Calders’ NFU offer have been advised to the NFU membership through a booklet inserted in some 40,000 NFU magazines sent out at the end of September, together with an insertion on NFU’s website.

Walford’s upping the game

Victoria Poolman travels to Ross on Wye to meet George Smith, Managing Director of Walford Timber Ltd Subscribers to the Fencing and Landscaping News would have had to be reading with their eyes shut for the last year to be unaware of the ongoing timber treatment issues which has cast a cloud over the industry. With whispers of unreliable chemicals and rotting posts, fingers have been pointed in every which way - much good that it has done anyone. But if anything has been revealed during this time, it’s which companies consider ignorance as bliss, and which ones are actively putting changes in place to ensure that the ban of CCA has no long term effect on the quality of their products. One such company who are keen to move forward and demonstrate confidence in their products is that of Walford Timber Ltd. Having been going strong for sixty five years from their 12-acre depot in the beautiful Herefordshire countryside, George, his Father Gerry, and his late Grandfather Herbert (who founded the company) have seen recessions, timber droughts – you name it – and they are still standing stronger than ever, with a separate retail outlet to their name in Cheltenham and plenty of business to go with it. George tells me: “We have taken the time to examine our position in the trade, and what we need to do to offer the best products and service on the market, with a particular focus on increasing confidence in treated timber products. Instead of burying our head in the sand, we made the conscious decision to face the treatment issues head-on, by changing the way we treat our wood to ensure that we can provide our

customers with a meaningful, quality assured guarantee.” Having had a treatment facility on their site for half a century, the latest investment is a shiny new kiln which is now up and running. Having been planning the installation for more than a year, its use will revolutionise the way things work at Walford. Instead of letting timber dry naturally and treating it as it is, much of Walford’s stock destined for ground contact will be kiln-dried to ensure that it reaches a moisture content of 28%, in order for the treatment to be absorbed much deeper into the product. George adds, “We’ve also built some new dry stores, so that instead of the wood sitting around outside getting damp , it’s now stored in a nice dry environment before being put into the kiln, which speeds up the process.” At the moment, not all Walford’s timber will be kiln-dried, as George believes that it is important to give customers a choice suited to their budget: “Currently, price is a big

issue for many contractors, and some would rather choose the cheaper nonkiln dried materials - so for now we’ll be continuing to offer those materials as well”. Though these products are by no means shoddy, they will come without the 15 year guarantee that new brand ‘PermaTimber’ will offer. Unlike the standard products, the PermaTimber range will consist only of Pine, Larch and Douglas fir, for their suitability to treatment and their natural durability. The range of products launched under this new umbrella will also be available treated to the Highways Sector Scheme 4 requirements (which comes with a 30 year guarantee) – thus providing those that want it with the most failsafe timber available. Having undergone a rigorous process backed by Osmose, being Quality Assured - and with the company being all set to achieve ISO 9001 (a requirement in order to reach standards laid out by the Highways Agency), George’s confidence in his products is higher than ever. And he’s happy with the prediction that in the future we will see a time when all wood will be treated in this way to comply with requirements from local authorities, the construction industry – and the general public. And as if the overhaul in treatment wasn’t enough going on at Walford Timber, as George shows me around the site he reveals even more investments which have been made to improve the running of the company. The biggest of these is the recent purchase of a Stenner multi-head Featheredge line, which converts timber sections into featheredge quickly and more efficiently than

ever before. George tells me: “We have also been focusing on service levels a great deal, measuring our performance to ensure we exceed the customers expectations, ensuring the site is as tidy and organised as possible - as well as hiring the services of a marketing company to help us communicate what we do well and sell the benefits of buying from Walford Timber.” “We’ve had a lot to keep up with, including maintaining our FSC status, but we have to make sure every box is ticked in order to continue growing and keep ourselves open to new business.” George plans to open another retail outlet following the success of his Cheltenham branch, which since first trading in 2004, has been quite the success story – even through the recession. Speaking of which, despite many businesses feeling the heat, Walford Timber has been sturdy enough to make the past year a productive one, by focusing on putting an infrastructure in place that will hold them in good stead when things take an upwards turn. With big plans for the future and plenty of enthusiasm for his family business, George is dedicated to upping his game and providing the best service and timber money can buy. With service, quality and reliability being top of his check-list, I have no doubt that his forward thinking will pay off grandly. Torry Hill gain FSC accreditation

Victoria Poolman visits John Leigh-Pemberton and John Gambell of Torry Hill Fencing to find out how their ‘green’ chestnut just got greener... In the six months since I visited Torry Hill, productivity has certainly been on a high. Not only has their huge larch-panelled building been filled with three new machines, the vast yard area is fully stocked with roll upon roll of chestnut fencing, as well as a few new products to boot. Walking around the site, there’s a definite buzz in the air - and for good reason too.

John Gambell and John Leigh-Pemberton

Having just achieved the prestigious FSC certification, both Torry Hill’s fencing manager, John Gambol, and director, John Leigh Pemberton, are over the moon. The former tells me, “We believe we are one of the only chestnut fencing manufacturers in the world to be awarded 100% pure FSC status so it really does set us apart.” Indeed, with Torry Hill exporting products to eco-conscious Europe, their green customers are very excited about the news. John Gambell tells me, “by having

the FSC certification, it really honours the fact that all our products are sustainably, locally sourced - and given how keen John LeighPemberton is on well-managed

woodland, it really pays testimony to all the hard work that goes on here.” Indeed, with chestnut being a

company news it’s attractive too – as well as being economic, easily erected and strong. What’s more, now with the FSC status tucked nicely under the Torry Hill belt, the company has a Chain of Custody certificate so that their chestnut can be traced back to the source... which is about five minutes down the road. The FSC accreditation isn’t the only good news, with Torry Hill Fencing having just been awarded a contract of olympic proportions... quite literally! The Company will be supplying contractors Norbury with a whopping eight and a half miles of chestnut fencing and posts to the Olympic village, currently under construction in Hackney. And if this is anything to go by, all this recognition means a Torry Hill explosion onto the marketplace. John Leigh-Pemberton tells me: “We’ve now got the credentials to get out into all kinds of new arenas such as civil engineering, as well as local authorities and trusts. Chestnut is the answer to the softwood treatment problems and is completely renewable as it thrives on being harvested. It’s wonderful that in times when it’s so important to have a green conscience, the virtues of chestnut are being recognised.” As the timber is growing in popularity,

two new products have recently been launched. Torry Post and Rail is the first new arrival, bearing similarities to a traditional cleft fence, but with rails intersecting and overlapping to give a stronger, more durable product. In addition, the Torry Panel Fence is a real revelation, providing an attractive alternative to the traditional panel fencing with a strong, rustic look that’s perfect for gardens. John Gambell adds: “We’re also changing our rolls to 5 and 10 metres, and palletising them in lots of 12 or 20 to make it easier to offload.” Having designed his own stacking machine to palletise these

loads, John is very excited about the large orders coming in. And by way of marking the start of a new era for the company, their website (www.torryhill.co.uk/ chestnut) has just been launched, having undergone a very successful facelift. As if all this news weren’t enough to fill a page, plans are afoot to relocate a chipper at the top of the site in keeping with the green image. John Leigh-Pemberton tells me, “This winter I shall supply approximately 1,000 tons of very high quality G50 grade hardwood seasoned woodchip. We’re currently supplying

schools and Local Authorities with the chip, as well as selling for biomass fuels and heating all the offices and holiday accommodation on the Torry Hill Farm estate.” These are exciting times indeed for the two Johns. And with Mr Gambell developing Torry Hill Fencing at a rate of knots, we’re all sure to be seeing a lot more of the name in the coming months... and in 2012, of course. Stenner unveils new service packages One of the world leaders in bandsaw technology, is launching a service package that will help customers service their machines faster and more effectively – at a competitive price. With reliability of band resaws a key issue for small and medium size timber merchants, Stenner Limited has extended the range of service packages it currently offers the sector, with a new pack that contains everything a merchant will need to keep his machine running effectively. With each service call, Stenner can now provide a service pack of “consumable” spare parts. This pack will contain all the parts normally required for a routine service, plus some additional components for later use, with the combined pack price carrying a significant discount over the individually-priced items. And, in addition to its own skilled installation and service technicians, who will respond to customer requirements for machine servicing, Stenner also has ‘approved service

partners’ whose technicians have completed training at the Stenner factory in the maintenance requirements of its band resaws. “All too often technicians make service calls and leave the customer with a list of components required for each machine simply because they have nothing to fit at the time,” says Stenner Sales Director Fred Harding. “This would be unacceptable in other industries. With our new service pack, we can make sure that Stenner machine users have all the serviceable parts they need, when they need them. This should mean the machines are serviced quicker and more effectively.” Service packs will be available direct from Stenner or through its approved service partners. Tornado launches large rolls The successful development of machinery such as the Quickfencer, which aids the unrolling and tensioning of wire fencing using a tractor, has reduced fencing installation time and led to demand for longer rolls of fencing. Wire fencing was traditionally supplied in 50 metre rolls before Tornado revolutionised the fencing industry and introduced high tensile fencing into the UK in 100 metre lengths, which quickly became the standard. The Quickfencer, which enables the use of much longer rolls, is changing this. In order to satisfy demand for longer rolls an extensive upgrade was undertaken at Tornado’s UK manufacturing plant, enabling Tornado to offer both Mild Steel and Hi-Tensile Plus stock fencing in up to 500 metre rolls and horse fencing in up to 150 metres. The results are a significant saving in both wire joiners and labour, with mechanised fencing also reducing manual handling issues and improving health and safety. The range of longer roll products has

The Price is Right in Shropshire Chris Berry talks with John Price of DJ Price Shropshire-based DJ Price has been involved with forestry, timber and fencing supplies since the early 80s, but the family ties with the industry go back even further. ‘My father, Roland, worked in timber for many years. I started in the forestry world straight from school and I’ve been with it ever since. Together with my brother, Chris, we formed DJ Price, initially felling timber. Our business changed when the demand for peeled stakes was required and we moved out of the woods to centre on peeling and pointing.’ Today’s business now sees the company as a leading supplier of timber and fencing in Wem and the surrounding area. ‘We are still an independent family firm providing all manner of timber and fencing supplies, including specialist supplies of peeled and untreated material, redwood posts, cundy peeled and pointed stakes and rails as well as traditional post and rail.’

Chris concentrates on the outside work putting up fences where they offer a full service from supply to erecting, whilst John and his son

David look after the mill and the manufacturing operation. It is a system that is working well and David is about to become an even

greater part of the business for he future. ‘I am delighted that David is joining

We supply a number of customers who treat their own timber and we believe that the quality we provide enables them to make the most of their treating facilities.’

DJ Price’s business is split between agriculture, domestic and equestrian, but being in a rural heartland it comes as no surprise that agriculture makes up the lion’s share of their work. Entries flood in for Newark Tractor Show CRASH PROTECTION PRODUCTS

Visitors to the increasingly popular Newark Vintage Tractor & Heritage Show (7 – 8 November) will be treated to a fantastic display of vehicles as entries are flooding in almost double compared to this time last year. With indoor space at a premium, demand is so great that organisers may have to bring forward the closing date. The showground’s permanent exhibition halls and specially erected marquees can house 700 exhibits – once that figure is reached entries will be allocated an outside plot. The organisers are pleased to confirm that a special 180-metre long marquee will connect the Lady Eastwood Pavilion to the George Stephenson Exhibition Hall thus allowing visitors to enjoy the majority of the Show under cover. Traditional features, the Brown & Co Auction (Saturday) and the Old Sodbury Sort-Out (Sunday), will be relocated to the Main Ring this year for easy access. Sunday sees the traditional Remembrance Day Service in the George Stephenson Exhibition Hall. Links between the show and

the armed services will be further reinforced with an extended display of military vehicles. Vintage and classic commercial vehicles and that agricultural icon, the Land Rover, will also be well represented. One of the many highlights of the show is the Presentation Dinner on Saturday evening. Held in the Cedric Ford Pavilion, the three-course dinner is preceded by the presentation of trophies – a vast array of silverware much coveted by the exhibitors. Discounted tickets can be purchased in advance for both the show and the Presentation Dinner (saving £2.00 on each). Children under-16 will be admitted free of charge so at just £5.00 per adult (£7.00 on the gate) the Newark Vintage Tractor & Heritage Show is truly an inexpensive day out for all the family. JACKSONS FENCING AIDS DRAGON’S BID TO REVAMP FADING SEASIDE ATTRACTION Jacksons Fencing, one of the country’s leading fencing and access control specialists which is headquartered in Kent, has joined forces with entrepreneur and infamous Dragons’ Den business angel, Duncan Bannatyne OBE to inject a new lease of life into a fading local seaside attraction – the Boating Pool in Ramsgate. The Boating Pool was one of 6 coastal sites around the UK chosen to take part in a brand new TV series which aims to prove that regeneration can rekindle public affection for our seaside attractions – and most importantly stimulate a growth in business income for the local community. The revamp is due to be featured on the new Virgin 1 TV show, ‘The Great British Holiday Makeover’, fronted by Duncan Bannatyne, and scheduled to hit our screens in early summer 2010. The site, which is now leased by Mr Thalis Thalis, was originally opened as a tea pavilion and bandstand in 1926 by HRH the Prince of Wales. In the early 50s the bandstand was demolished and a boating pool and play area installed. Now Grade II listed, the site was in dire need of renovation, with an urgent requirement to replace the tatty galvanised triple point palisade fencing attached to a run of temporary fencing topped by barbed wire which surrounds the play area. Since this area backs onto a 4 foot drop to the promenade, the design of a secure and safe perimeter fence, which blended with the elegant design of the buildings surrounding the pool, was a number one priority. Jacksons Fencing was asked to make recommendations for replacing the fencing at the front of the playground. In the interest of supporting a local regeneration project, the company offered to fund 50% of the fencing renovation works, and proposed a specially designed railing system that would meet with all design, safety and security considerations, with the balance of funding coming from Thanet District Council. The final choice of fencing provides an aesthetically pleasing solution in keeping with the character of the site, but with no

Duncan and Richard

“Jacksons Fencing provided a bespoke solution in record time which delivers the right level of protection – whilst complementing the original grace and charm of the architecture.” Mr Thalis compromise on safety and meeting with all current BS standards. The simple, clean lines of the new fence echo traditional wrought iron railings but feature an anti-trap design and the added strength and durability of galvanized and powder coated steel. In addition, the fencing also delivers a lasting legacy - in being backed by the company’s standard 25-year service life guarantee. In true TV style, Jackons Fencing was given just one week to develop the design and manufacture, galvanize and powder coat the fence panels and posts, before shipping to site for installation from 17th August 2009. Commenting on the project Mr Thalis said “I’m delighted with the transformation of the site. The replacement of the fencing was key

to the success of this project since not only was the existing barrier an eye sore – it also represented a major safety hazard for the children enjoying the play area facility. Jacksons Fencing provided a bespoke solution in record time which delivers the right level of protection – whilst complementing the original grace and charm of the architecture.” Mr Thalis continued “I’m amazed by the quick turnaround on this project and the tireless professionalism of the Jacksons Fencing team. The new boundary fencing has helped to restore the site to its former glory and the children’s play area is now safely protected from the drop to the promenade without restricting the wonderful sea views”. Brian White, Director of Regeneration Services at Thanet District Council

commented “These historic buildings are an important part of Ramsgate’s promenade. But in a way their condition reflected the gradual decline of seaside holidays, resulting in lack of investment to seafront areas, which in turn made them less attractive to visitors. Happily this project has shown that a thoughtful approach, without excessive cost, can improve not just the business but also the surrounding area. Bringing holiday makers and locals back to enjoying the seaside”. It is hoped grant assistance may be provided to allow the fencing around the entire play area to be replaced with this new style fencing. For more information... Visit www.jacksonfencing.co.uk

Kanga – it’s kid’s play Chris Berry talks with Charlie Clayton of PGS Installations Business ups and downs are often referred to as ‘what you win on the swings you might lose on the roundabouts’. For Charlie Clayton and his son Paul it’s all swings and roundabouts, all the time. They are playground installers and carry out their business throughout the UK, Ireland and have even installed a playground over in Austria.

74

fencing news October 2009

Charlie has been in business, firstly as Playground Services Ltd, and latterly as PGS Installations Ltd for over 12 years, but it is the machine he bought 2 years ago that has really assisted his trade in the recent past. ‘We purchased a Kanga Kid. It’s a fantastic machine which has effectively saved me labour and time. Prior to getting it we used to do all of the jobs it now does, by hand. We can now drill holes from 6” right up to 20” and when you’re dealing with all aspects of playground installation it is a real help. It has a big Honda engine and is so versatile. It can have a trenching machine attached, or cement mixer or rotovator. It’s also

ideal for getting into tight entrances to playgrounds and can be transported in the transit van.’

top. I think it’s all about schools and local authorities embracing environmentally sound play areas.’

Charlie has been extremely impressed by not only the performance of the machine but also the back-up service he gets from Kanga.

Charlie’s son Paul drives the Kanga most, and received full training from a Kanga representative when the machine was delivered.

‘Occasionally we have needed some oil filters, air filter, spark plugs, replacement auger teeth or just a service, and I’ve got to say the after sales service for parts and service provided by them is fantastic. It’s definitely the best we’ve ever had.’

‘It is a major asset to our business,’ says Charlie. ‘I can’t now imagine how we worked without it. Because it is one of Kanga’s smallest machines it is also able to get into those tight spots where you only get a wheelbarrow’s width to get in and out – and that’s a great help too.’

Having worked originally for Berkshire County Council, Charlie started in business when the council tendered for jobs. He tells of how today’s playground business has changed back again to what it was years ago. ‘For a time rubber surfaces were the thing, but more and more are now going back to bark, woodchip or sand. We prefer the sand as the Kanga Kid simply scoots across the

Magnetically triggered latch is ideal for general-purpose gates The Magna-Latch® ‘Side Pull’ general-purpose gate latch offers a low-cost and effective latching solution for gates around homes and gardens. When Australian design and manufacturing company D&D Technologies first devised the idea of a reliable, magnetic gate latch it developed the Side Pull shape and design. Powered by super-strong “permanent magnets”, which never lose their power, these quality latches incur no mechanical interference to closure, offering a high degree of reliability, safety, and, in some instances, child resistance. The Side Pull “Series 2” model now offers up to 10mm (3/8”) of vertical adjustment, as well as 10mm (3/8”) of horizontal adjustment. This is a convenient improvement over the preceding model. This added adjustability makes the S2 very easy to install – and it also easily adapts to left- or right-hand hinged gates.

The Side Pull model is one of three Magna-Latch models designed for different applications. While the bigger Top Pull and Vertical Pull are key lockable and offer an inherently higher level of child resistance, the Side Pull does not carry a key lock feature. Thus it is an inexpensive solution.

D&D Technologies’ simple but effective MagnaLatch® ‘Side Pull’ is ideal for general-purpose house and garden gates.”

All Magna-Latch models are designed to guard against rust, binding, sagging, bending and staining. Despite some dimensional limitations (e.g. gateto-post gap), the Side Pull can be mounted to any type of gate or fence material. As with all of D&D Technologies’ products, the Magna-Latch® ‘Side Pull’ is backed by a Lifetime Warranty. For product availability or further information contact Cathy Elliott at D&D Technologies’ on +31 (0)30 291 9847 or [email protected]. au, or visit D&D’s website at www.ddtechglobal.com

Saving time – through tension fencing news watches the innovative new Scot Fencer roll out in England! Working smarter not harder is what most of us strive for, and with a new product that has hit the market recently Clive Houldey of DCH Farm Sales reckons it is doing just that for the people he is involved with. Together with agricultural engineer Chris Thompson of BoM Agriquipment, Clive designed and

then Chris developed what is now known as the Scot Fencer, which is a front wire dispenser for wire tensioning that loads on to the front of a tractor. ‘It has certainly made the job such a lot easier,’ says Dave Pearson of Belton-based fencing contractors Pearson Brothers who have been involved with the Scot Fencer for

a while now. ‘It really does cut the job down by half the time and it’s no longer the back-breaking time it once was, so that has to be good. It’s now just a case of rolling it out and stapling it to each post.’

Dave Pearson is particularly pleased with its consistency and quality of tension, something that really matters in the industry. ‘It is simply outstanding and beats doing the job by hand. We’ve also

machinery installed two lines of barbed wire around the perimeter of where we have been working in Crowle recently and the Scot Fencer has coped with that easily too.’

Pearson Brothers have worked with Chris Thompson for the past two years and also use his post borer for many jobs, so they were aware of the quality they were taking on.

‘It has transformed the way we work,’ says Dave, who works with his brother Anthony across Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. The Scot Fencer has been developed since 2008 and has appeared at the Highland Show. It is already used on a number of Scottish farms and the name for the machine came about because that is where it was first used.

Arch team triumphs at Leeds Tree-Athlon Never ones to back away from a challenge, a 13-strong team from Arch Timber Protection took part in the 2009 Tree-Athlon a 5km run held at Temple Newsam in Leeds in September. The Arch team was racing to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Tanalith E wood preservative in the UK, and also promote the benefit of trees in the urban landscape through the event charity, Trees for Cities. Suitably attired in their celebration t-shirts and race numbers, the team has collectively raised close to £1,000 for Trees for Cities. Members of the running team have each undertaken a variety of training regimes, including what became a staple Friday afternoon session around Pontefract Park straight

from the office. A keen triathlete in recent years, Regional Sales Manager Chris Smith is currently studying for his MBA with Arch, and used the event as the perfect opportunity to get back into running.

On the day, leading the way to victory for Arch Timber Protection was Richard Spooner, Marketing Executive, winning the race overall with an excellent time of 18:08. Noteworthy performances also included those from Bev Clark, Purchasing Manager who secured a prize for second lady overall, and Vicky Flowers, QA Administrator, whose training regime really paid dividends to see her cross the line in 29:55.
