1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. 2. Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. 4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. 5. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Christian year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy.

Red Envelope Life Project Responsibility begins with conception and ceases with natural death. Address a red envelope to: President Barack Obama The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Washington, D.C. 20500 On the back of the envelope, write the following message: This envelope represents one child who died in abortion. It is empty because that life was unable to offer anything to the world. Put the envelope in the mail. Then email all your friends and ask them to do the same. I wish we could send 50 million red envelopes, one for every child who died before having a chance to live. Maybe it will change the heart of the president. Thank you to over the 850 parishioners who took part in the Bishop’s postcard campaign to our Senators and representative. Please join Father and others on Saturdays at 8:30 a.m. at the Aanchor abortion clinic.

Catholic Charities Second Collection This Weekend A special second collection will be held on February 21 & 22 for Catholic Charities. There are no special envelopes, just a plea from our hearts for your support. This year Catholic Charities is facing another challenging financial year, yet the need for services for the poor continues to increase. Many of the people that come to Catholic Charities are families in need of basic items – things many of us take for granted like food, clothing and shelter. And almost 50% of those in need are children. This month we will be celebrating Ash Wednesday. The Lenten Season is a good time to consider the vulnerable and needy. Please spend some time finding out more about Catholic Charities and the programs and services in your community. You can also volunteer or help organize an event. For more information, call Rosemary Echevarria at 630-495-8008 x2115 or visit www.cc-doj.org. Please support the Catholic Charities second collection on February 21 & 22. Together we are doing God’s work!
Baskets! Baskets! The St. Joseph Table is in need of large baskets for our raffles at the Table on March 15. If you would be able to donate any, please drop them off at the narthex or call Mary Ellen (630 495-1339) for pick up. Thanks!
Adoration Thank You! The Eucharistic Adoration Committee would like to thank all of you who come to the weekly & 24-hour Eucharistic Adoration to spend quiet and peaceful time talking with Jesus and to be in His presence. We want you to know how much we appreciate your commitment and we invite all who have thought about stopping in, to come join us each Thursday for a personal conversation with Our Lord!

Project Gabriel This is an outreach to girls, young women who have chosen not to abort their child. Those involved with Project Gabriel then mentor, work with the young mom, during her pregnancy and after until her and the baby get settled. Project Gabriel is a ministry of Christ the King. Leslie Mc Namara is our parish coordinator. I need more women and men to be a part of the team with Leslie and I. At one weekday mass, I asked the people for a donation of a car seat, stroller, diapers, etc.. An hour later after mass, one parishioner brought a new car set and stroller to the rectory. A couple kind ladies went shopping and brought back bags of new clothing, diapers. I received over one hundred dollars in cash donations, from those in attendance at mass. This past Thursday, our Knights of Columbus gave a one hundred and fifty dollar donation to the work of Project Gabriel. Thank you knights and all the parishioners who gave towards the cause of the young woman who said no to abortion and brought her child into this world. Interested in being a part of the team or wish to make donations? Contact Fr. Peter at 396.6079 or Leslie our parish coordinator—629.1717 Fr. Peter

February 15, 2009 Dear Parishioners, For almost fifty years, Christ the King Parish has been blessed with the opportunity to touch the minds and hearts of God’s children. Throughout its history, our school has been a witness to the love of Christ while providing for the academic, emotional, and spiritual needs of our students. This has not always been an easy task, and in recent times, our school has faced significant financial challenges. It is important to note that these challenges have in no way resulted from a lack of generosity on the part of our school families or the parish. In fact, the commitment of time, talent, and treasure has never been stronger. Consider the fact that in this year alone, our school parents and parishioners have already raised $36,000 for the school. That comes to over $500 per child! Despite our success in fundraising, our enrollment has fallen as our costs have continued to rise. At current enrollment levels, the cost of educating each student has risen to $7,000 per child. At this level, we are, in effect, no longer able to provide a comprehensive program from pre-school through eighth grade. It is with an overwhelming sense of gratitude for all you have done that I must now share with you an important decision that will certainly affect the parish and each school family. In a letter I have just received from Bishop Peter Sartain, a decision has been made to begin a significant restructuring of our school. Beginning in the Fall of 2009, our school will no longer provide an academic program for students in grades 1-8. If we have sufficient enrollment—a minimum of twenty full-time equivalent students— our school will offer a high quality, Catholic, pre-school and kindergarten program for three, four, and five-year olds. This last statement is, indeed, the silver lining around a cloud of sadness at the loss of our elementary program. With joy we look forward to welcoming God’s little ones to our school as we remember the precious words of our Lord—Let the little children come to me . . . because the kingdom of heaven belongs to people like these. It is important to note that this decision resulted from an advisory process shared by groups at both the diocesan and parish levels. These advisory groups included the Office of the Bishop, the Diocesan School Board, the Catholic Schools Office, the Diocesan Finance Office as well as our own Parish Council, Parish Finance Council and Parish School Board. I am grateful for the assistance, support, and prayers from each of these groups. As the school prepares for this restructuring, both parish and school staffs are dedicated to assisting each school family in the transition to new elementary schools. We have already begun to work with the neighboring Catholic schools to ensure that every child has access to a Catholic education. To begin this process, I have extended to every school parent an invitation to attend an important meeting on Tuesday, February 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the school gym. Principals from our neighboring Catholic schools will be in attendance to provide families with information about their programs and process for registration. Mrs. Placey and I, along with members of our school board, will also be present to answer questions. For those unable to attend this meeting, information will be provided on our school’s web site. A meeting, to be scheduled, will be hosted for families interested in learning more about next year’s pre-school and kindergarten program. Be assured that foremost in our minds are the needs of our school children as they face the uncertainty of next year. Mrs. Placey, Mr. Benning, and I will be working with staff and parents to plan activities that will allow them to make their time at CKS a special time even as they plan for the excitement of a new school experience next year. Please be assured of my prayers and support during this time of transition. Finally, let us all pray for one another as together we show gratitude for the past, celebrate the present, and continue to seek wisdom for the future. In Christ Our King, Father Peter Jarosz

Men, Come for a Great Evening February 23, 7:30-9:00PM Several us of from the parish joined hundreds of others at the Great Lakes Catholic Men’s Conference in October. We now have recordings of the great talks given that day by five great speakers. Please join us in the Parish Life Center as we listen to and reflect on the talk given by Richard Lane. A Catholic convert since 2003, Richard is the son of National Football Hall of Fame cornerback Dick “Night Train” Lane. In 2005 he co-founded Qorban Ministries, a Catholic evangelist organization dedicated to serving the poor, needy and suffering through preaching, teaching and sharing the Word of God. At times he can be found handing out Bibles on the streets of St. Louis, talking to gang bangers, drug dealers and prostitutes. He has been a speaker at various Catholic conferences, parish missions and revivals across the country. For more about Richard Lane, check out http:// www.qorban.net/. Community Building Event March 15 St. Joseph Table Our plans are underway for our annual St. Joseph Table to be held on Sunday, March 15, at 1:00 p. m. in the Christ the King School Gymnasium. This is a wonderful opportunity to share food and friendship with the families and friends of our parishioners. We would like to share a short history of St. Joseph Table, especially for those who are unfamiliar with and new to the event here in our parish. Following is that brief description. The table is a tradition of simple, usually meatless dishes, prepared and shared with neighbors and friends. Those attending offer a free-will donation and all the proceeds are given to the poor, a needy or charitable organization and the like. Sicilian/Italian families started this tradition. History tells us they prayed to St. Joseph to end a famine caused by drought. When their prayers were answered, and it rained, the people showed thanks to St. Joseph by sharing their precious food with the poor. The menu typically includes pasta, fish, eggs/ omelet’s, bread and vegetables which also signifies the “poor”, unable to afford meat in olden times. Another reason for this meatless tradition is believed to be the fact the feast day falls during the Lenten season. There are special breads baked in crosses and other Christian shapes, which are displayed on the main table in the center of the celebration. The main table usually in the shape of a cross or three-tier (to signify the trinity), is decorated with flowers, a sample of each food item, candles and a statue of St. Joseph. Another piece of the history involves the fava bean. During the famine, the fava bean was the only thing to thrive while all the other crops failed. Now this bean is called the “lucky bean”. Legend has it that a person carrying a “lucky bean” will never be without coins. All of this acts as a reminder to pray to St. Joseph, especially for the poor & needy. The proceeds from this year's St. Joseph Table will go to Catholic Charities of Lombard. For our table to be a success again this year, we will need participation from many. We will be asking for your specific commitments and contributions during the next few weeks. Please be thinking now how you might help: food donations, raffle prize donations, set up, clean up, vendor solicitation, pick up, just to name a few of our needs. Being involved in this event has proven to be very rewarding. Plan to attend, help if you can, come enjoy good food, fun, community, and help those in need. What a wonderful feeling you will have - we guarantee it! For further information please call Mary Ellen Clish at 1-630-4951339. Father Peter and the St. Joseph Table Committee
