FEAR OF THE LORD A. Meaning of the Fear of the Lord • Following God’s ways (Ps. 128:1) Remark: Characteristics of God’s ways: a. Holy (Ps. 77: 13) b. Perfect (2 Sam. 22:31) c. Just and True (Rev. 15:3) d. Right Path (Pr. 14:2) • Hating evil (Pr. 8:13, Job 1:8) Remark: When following God’s ways it’s also hating evil and this can be compared to the verse: “You cannot serve two masters…” (Matt 6:24) • It is True Wisdom ( Job 28:28) Remark: Fear of the Lord is also: a. Foundation of true wisdom (Ps.111:10) b. Foundation of true knowledge (Pr. 1:7) • It is Treasure (Is 33:6) • It is a Spirit (Is 11:2) Remark: If you fear the Lord you’ll eventually receive the following: a. Gift of the Spirit (1 Cor. 12:1-7) b. Fruits of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22-26) Remark: It has been prophesied that God will pour out His spirit. (Joel 2:28-29) B. Learning and understanding the Fear of the Lord: • Read the Bible daily (Deut. 17:18-20) Remark: God blesses the one who reads… (Rev. 1:3) • Search for wisdom and understanding (Pr. 2:1-6) Remark: Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. C. If you fear the Lord you must: • Worship Him (Deut. 10:20) • Praise Him (Ps. 136: 19-21) • Trust Him (Ps.115:9-11) • Faithfully serve Him (Jos. 24:13-15) • Act in fear of the Lord with faithfulness (2 Chr. 19:9) • Not envy sinners (Pr. 23:17-18, Pr. 24:19-22) • Not be impressed by your own wisdom (Pr. 3:5-7) • Not taking advantage of each other (Lev. 25:14-17) • Fear only Him (Deut. 13:1-4) D. The Lord’s delight is in those who feared Him (Ps. 147:10-11) Remark: • He is like a father to those who feared Him (Ps. 103:13) • They have the Lord’s promise of mercy (Mal. 3:16-18)
