Welcome to Fall Creek Falls It has been a great pleasure putting together the second annual 2010 Fall Creek Falls Visitor Guide! The Burckhards have spent many of our weekends uncovering stories for the three destinations that we specialize in. We are always searching for those treasures, off-the-beaten track gems, and places that we would like to vacation at. “Oma” (Grandma) Fuchs and the McCann family (sister’s) joined in the opportunity to see the Fall Creek Falls region for the first time since coming to Tennessee in 1993! The Fall Creek Falls (FCF) region is a wonderful destination with endless outdoor recreation possibilities, waterfalls and scenery that rivals any major destination in the US offering superb valleys, gorges, flora, forests, cliffs, wildlife, natural beauty and magnificent panoramic views. The region is rich in history and culture; and the people are welcoming. We have uncovered some excellent eateries including new favorites - fried chicken at the City Café in historic downtown McMinnville and the delightful bohemian, eclectic Foglight Foodhouse in Walling, near Rock Island. The Blue Orchid Bistro in Dunlap, in its second year, continues to serve up excellent gourmet meals including superb lunches and incredible salads with homemade dressings. It has become a destination and special gathering place for visitors, locals and business people alike! Love brick oven pizzas? I love the pizza from Top of the Porch, at the north entrance of the park. They offer the best brick oven pizzas in Tennessee. How about ribs? Fire House Grill smokes their ribs all day for succulent meat that falls off the bone slathered in great sauces. Looking for a great place for a hotdog or taco salad? Pluto’s Hotdogs in downtown Sparta is the place to go. While you are there head over to The Fragrant Mushroom to see Cheri and Thor McNeil. They offer beautiful, handcrafted pottery that has won numerous awards. With their new expanded space, they can offer more of Thor’s masterpiece pottery, handcrafted tiles, lampshades, works from other local artists, and candles. Have a sweet tooth? Travel on over to the Flower Basket and Sweet Shop in downtown McMinnville. They offer homemade chocolate, fresh squeezed lemonade, and a beautiful florist and home furnishings store. Fall Creek Falls State Park continues to offer the best seafood buffet in the Fall Creek Falls region. They offer daily specials on their hot bar. Downtown McMinnville is one of the most delightful towns offering shopping, antiques, history and more. Sherrill and George Bull rallied their local Chamber and businesses to take part in the second annual Fall Creek Falls Visitor Guide to celebrate McMinnville’s 200 years, and showcase their great downtown charm, shopping, antiques, activities and great events. Fall Creek Falls Bed and Breakfast continues to offer excellent accommodations with a scrumptious breakfast located near the park. Long Branch Lakes continues to work feverishly on the premier gated development at Fall Creek Falls with the Trout Hill Condominiums, the Bunkhouse Home Sites dotting the edges of Long Branch Lakes Equestrian Village, and their wonderful amenities including a soccer field, badminton and volleyball nets, basketball court and heated outdoor in ground pool with a lake view! Long Branch Lakes is truly an exceptional, high quality, rustic community preserving God’s assets and making the best use of His creation. The Rock Island area and Cotten’s Marina were my “aha” moments and we loved learning more about Rock Island. The only marina on the Caney Fork River, Greg and Sherry’s Cotten’s Marina has a great Jimmy Buffet feel, awesome cheeseburgers and quesadillas, and the river that spoils the Nashvillians (especially in the summer months) year round. The beauty and opportunities with many of the Rock Island developers, including Rock Island Bay are quite alluring to these river lovers. The Fall Creek Falls region continues to have folks discover the beauty of the land, the outdoor recreation, and the friendly folks. Many are retiring here, relocating, or just investing in land for the future. What a great investment. Come discover this slice of heaven and see why so many vacation and enjoy weekend getaways to this beautiful area, conveniently located less than two hours from Nashville, Chattanooga or Knoxville off of scenic Highway 111. Happy Trails and Enjoy your Visit to the Fall Creek Falls Region! Fall Creek Falls Bed & Breakfast Fall Creek Falls Bed and Breakfast opened in 1991. It was the first bed & breakfast on the Cumberland Plateau in the Fall Creek Falls State Park area. Owners and innkeepers, Doug & Rita Pruett, offer a comfortable and pleasant stay in their luxurious bed and breakfast country manor home. They have lovingly operated their impeccable residence for over eighteen years and have seen a lot of satisfied customers. These guests have enjoyed the sprawling acres, amazing views, and delicious breakfasts cooked by Doug.
Creek Falls region. She feels that the Fall Creek Falls State Park is still one of the largely undiscovered, non-commercialized vacation spots in the South. Her determined efforts have brought positive change to the area with over 64 developers discovering the region. She highlights the region, working closely with both Chambers of Commerce surrounding the park; the PikevilleBledsoe County Chamber of Commerce and The Greater Van Buren County-Spencer Chamber of Commerce. In addition, Rita works with Tennessee’s state tourism officials, both statewide and regionally, to promote the area and to give exposure to this fantastic unspoiled outdoor recreation paradise.
Talk about a scrumptious breakfast, come visit and allow Chef Doug to spoil you with recipes handed down from his grandmother. A typical breakfast might be Stuffed French Toast with Homemade Apple Cider Syrup with Sausage and Cooked Apples, or his more recent addition to the menu - “Peach Crème Cheese Stuffed French Toast” with Lemon Poppy Seed Scones and Homemade Cinnamon Rolls. Of course, along with breakfast you will be blessed with Doug’s fascinating conversations with his guests or anyone willing to join! Doug loves to tell stories and share his viewpoints. Often you will find men in the kitchen talking with Doug about bow hunting or fishing. He is an avid outdoorsman and knows the Fall Creek Falls area better than most folks.
Fall Creek Falls Bed & Breakfast Inn is the only AAA rated lodging facility near the park and is surrounded by natural beauty, privacy, hardwood trees, horses, and wildlife. Guest accommodations include six air conditioned guestrooms, a two room suite, and the romantic MeadowBrook Cabin nestled behind the manor which gives guests their extra privacy, but still lets them enjoy the amenities of a bed and breakfast. Doug hand delivers breakfast to the cabin, making guests feel extra special. All have private baths, and the sunny, glassed-in Florida Room has magnificent views for the guests’ enjoyment, along with TV/ VCR’s, movies, and magazines available.
Since opening, Rita and Doug have hosted many country music singers and songwriters, senators, foreign travelers, and a multitude of work-weary guests, newlyweds, and of course thousands of other visitors to the beautiful Fall Creek Falls region, all leaving with fond memories and happy hearts.

Spotlight on Long Branch Lakes High atop the Cumberland Plateau and nestled in the extraordinary wonders of the Fall Creek Falls region sits one of the best kept secrets in Tennessee - Long Branch Lakes. While the economy and the financial debacle of Wall Street have dominated the main stream news for the last eighteen months, the steadfast developer, Long Branch Lakes (LBL), hums along ever so quietly while humbly building out their premier gated community. They have created a top notch property for nature lovers who are retiring, relocating, or buying a second home to use for vacations, family reunions, or weekend getaways. Long Branch Lakes is a place for people who care about responsible stewardship of the land and desire a high quality of life.
horses. They feel so fortunate to be able to live and be a part of this remarkable equestrian haven. The Bunkhouses at LBL - ten luxury, one of a kind, home sites that are located in the Equestrian Village - offer an extraordinary environment to enjoy nature at the LBL Equestrian Center. Some other exciting news coming from LBL is the building of the Trout Hill Condominium project. At press time, Trout Hill has moved from the conceptual stage to the ground breaking stage. LBL will offer 64 luxury condominiums to residents desiring the lavish living of LBL, without the maintenance. Trout Hill has its own beautiful entrance surrounded by woodlands and lakes. It offers such pleasures as a pool with bathhouse, recreation area, and a lake dock for fishing, canoe and kayak launching, and use of the other amenities in the LBL sprawling 5,000 acres development. Bill Dance, bass fishing’s first true superstar and America’s beloved Bassmaster, has teamed up with Long Branch Lakes to build his Bill Dance Signature Lakes at the community. These Bill Dance Signature Lakes offer trophy fish habitats that serve the serious and recreational fisherman alike and work in harmony and balance with the surrounding land use. The vast investments made by LBL to stock and professionally manage the community’s lakes and ponds, coupled with the expertise and knowledge of Bill Dance and his organization excites both the novice and avid fishermen who reside at LBL. Of course a resident can also enjoy the many lakes at LBL in other ways. Simply relaxing lakeside and reading a book, kayaking, bird watching, skipping rocks, or just enjoying a summer day with a blanket and a picnic lunch are some of the many other options.
Since the last printing of the Fall Creek Falls Visitor Guide in January 2009, much has happened at LBL. Twenty three homes have been built, or are in the process of being completed. In addition, plans for others are now underway and will break ground before 2009 ends. Soccer fields, basketball courts, volleyball and badminton courts, professional tennis courts, and a showcase in-ground lakeside heated outdoor pool are just a few of the amenities that welcome LBL residents. Custom built log pavilions with stone fireplaces create lakeside structures offering residents top amenities that can be used for outdoor sports, entertaining, socializing and/or relaxation. These are available for the residents of LBL and visiting friends and family. Log lined streets, rustic lampposts, and the newly opened Discovery Center with fantastic views across Camp Lake remind the residents and visitors of owners Edmond Cash, Andy Cash and Rick Klewein’s desire to give people a spectacular place to call home.
Come enjoy the activities at LBL and see why this premier community is receiving the highest compliments from its residents, folks moving in, the industry, and the local community. Long Branch Lakes can be visited during the Discovery Weekends (see dates on website) at 10 Long Branch Road, Spencer, TN. You can also visit them by website at www.longbranchlakes.com, or contact by phone at 888-615-6616.
LBL’s Equestrian Center managers, Lamar and Vanessa Wright, have also been busy laying out over thirty miles of meandering trails that allow the novice or experienced horse rider the chance to explore and uncover the majestic beauty of Long Branch’s most beautiful geography. They have been able to build a new 100’ x 200’ outdoor arena, along with two new paddocks and fence two new pastures for the horses to graze. Lamar and Vanessa feel very fortunate to be able to fulfill so many residents’ and visitors’ dreams of owning or adopting a horse and enjoying the equestrian lifestyle. Utilizing their vast knowledge, they are there to help give professional instruction to the novice or experienced rider, break a horse, train, and care for horses in these superior custom-built facilities. Fall Spotlight Creek FallsonVisitor Pikeville Guide The small town of Pikeville was formed in 1816 and is located at the head of the beautiful Sequatchie Valley in Bledsoe County. Farming has always been a major industry because of the fertile valley soil. The state of Tennessee has officially recognized Bledsoe County as the “Pumpkin Capital of Tennessee”. If you put all the pumpkins grown in Bledsoe County end-to-end, the line would be three miles long! The town of Pikeville is serious about welcoming tourists and drawing them to the downtown area. A magnificent renovation project is nearing completion which has involved installing beautiful street lights and landscaping. The town of Pikeville is sending a message during these tough economic times that “we are here to stay”. Several Pikeville historical structures have also been renovated and opened to the public. The Dr. James A. Ross House at 122 Frazier Street is one of them. It stores medical history and artifacts from the late 1870’s when it was used as a medical office and hospital up until the time the Bledsoe Memorial Hospital was built. The museum is open on the first and third Wednesday of each month from 12 noon CST to 2 PM CST. Call 423-533-4181 to verify dates and time.
127 Yard Sale comes through the middle of Pikeville bringing hundreds of out of state visitors who may never have visited otherwise. These folks delight in the hunt for bargains and treasures and get a taste of the local flavor while here. The town and people of Pikeville continue to work to make their town attractive to all who pass through. For more information about the attractions and events, contact Mrs. Carolyn Knight, Bledsoe County Librarian, at

Spotlight TopVisitor of theGuide Porch Fall Creek on Falls Top of the Porch Restaurant is a delightful restaurant, owned and operated by Janice and B.J. Starnes, conveniently located at the north entrance of the Fall Creek Falls State Park. Its presence is known to all entering the north entrance due to its 8,000 square feet of beautiful, white two story splendor and their elephant mascot that stands out front. Built five years ago as their personal residence, owner B.J. has since converted some of the living space to overnight accommodations, now known as Dogwood Manor. The Starnes’ also offer a wedding chapel and a small group meeting/ event space with full catering, planning, and restaurant that allows visitors coming from near and far to enjoy the marvelous atmosphere. Top of the Porch, is a full service restaurant which began as a need and today creates lasting memories for many visitors to the Fall Creek Falls State Park and region. B.J. and wife, Janice, pride themselves on offering excellent food, service, and desire to please their customers. Spotlight on Spencer There is a very old saying in our area - “If you stay in Van Buren County long enough to wear out a pair of shoes you will never leave.” Van Buren County is home to the majestic Fall Creek Falls State Park and waterfall. Of the 22,000 plus acres that comprise the Fall Creek Falls State Park, ninety percent of the land is within the boundaries of Van Buren County.
recovered from the closure. The beautiful Fall Creek Falls area was also home to the great civil war painter William Gilbert Gaul. Mr. Gaul was born in 1855 and inherited a 5,000 acre farm in Van Buren County from his uncle, Hiram Gilbert, Sr., a brother of his mother. Gilbert Gaul’s mother and uncle were both natives of Spencer. The land Gaul inherited was situated on the plateau near Cane Creek in an area which now borders on the southwest corner of Fall Creek Falls State Park. Mr. Gaul had a studio on his farm. Some of his best pictures were painted using local people posing in clothing worn by their ancestors, or themselves. The project that was to make Mr. Gaul a household name in his day and an acclaimed artist was a series of seven civil war themed paintings. A letter from the president of the National Academy of Design in New York described Mr. Gaul as the best qualified painter of war subjects on the continent. “The Pickett” was painted between 1905 and 1907; and a copy of it hangs in the Gilbert Gaul room at Fall Creek Falls State Park.
Van Buren County is also home to many caves. The most recent discovery- “Rumbling Falls Cave”- was written about in The National Geographic Magazine in June 2009. Another famous cave is “Big Bone Cave”. A radio carbon determination shows prehistoric activity dating back to the terminal archaic period, as early as 1000 B.C. Long regarded as an important historical site because of the discovery of the bones of the Megalonyx jeffersonii, a giant pleistocene ground sloth. It is for the preservation of these important artifacts that the State of Tennessee purchased the cave and surrounding land in 1976. Unfortunately, the bones of the giant sloth reside in the Philadelphia Science Museum in Philadelphia, PA.
I have only touched on the rich history of our unique Cumberland Plateau and Sequatchie Valley areas. Come and experience for yourself a people and area as unique as our history. For information about Spencer and Van Buren County, contact the Chamber of Commerce at www.VanBurenChamber.com or Landon Medley at

Quality education has always been a priority for the residents of Van Buren County. In 1849, the first co-educational college in the south was built in Spencer - Burritt College. The archway and a small portion of the original building are still standing. It served until 1939 as a major influence in the education of the youth in the area, as well as those from other communities. The decline of the school has been attributed to malaria and influenza epidemics that forced the school to close for a period of time until it was deemed safe to re-open. It never fully

Fall Spotlight Creek Falls on McMinnville Visitor Guide
Tribute to Ed Partin - It is with great sadness that McMinnville says goodbye to a dear friend, businessman, humanitarian, civic leader and one of McMinnville-Warren County’s biggest cheerleaders - Ed Partin, who passed away on September 12th, 2009. Ed lived a life that many would like to live. He was always happy, helpful, and determined to make a difference. He is fondly remembered by many friends, clients, and business associates. His unfaltering work in promoting McMinnville-Warren County brought many changes to the historic downtown area and helped many new folks discover why McMinnville is such a great place to live, work, and visit. Although I didn’t know Ed very well, I feel like I knew what he meant to so many. Many of us don’t take the opportunity to live a life that makes a difference and enjoy ours in the process. Ed did. He gave so much and made such a difference by deeds big and small, never asking anything in return. Everyone can learn a lesson from Ed’s lifestyle. By giving, seeking positive change, and believing in yourself and God, you too can make a difference in your life and in the lives of others. Make a choice to give back. Give a little or give a lot. It does make a difference. I know that Ed Partin’s contributions made McMinnville-Warren County a better place and he will be sorely missed. Goodbye, Ed and thank you from all of us. Fall Spotlight Creek Falls on McMinnville Visitor Guide McMinnville, TN is truly one of those bustling, yet charming southern towns loaded with character, history and southern hospitality. It is one of those towns that grabs you the moment you encounter one of the many ambassadors, which you can find in the downtown district at one of the beautiful bed and breakfasts, at many of the attractions in and around McMinnville, or perhaps one of the new residents. Folks choose McMinnville due to its comfortable quality of living, abundant shopping and dining options, rich history and culture, and central location to three of the major metropolitan areas of Tennessee - Nashville, Knoxville and Chattanooga. McMinnville was chartered as a county seat in 1810 and a railroad was built in the 1850’s - further opening this town to neighboring cities. Unfortunately, that same railroad made this an attractive stopover and target for both Union and Confederate troops nearly a decade later. No major battles were fought here, but McMinnville did change hands seven times during the War Between the States.
downtown merchants undertook a downtown revitalization project that has allowed this vibrant downtown area to shine once again. Now you see newly paved streets, underground lighting and utilities, beautifully landscaped sidewalks, walkways and park areas, and plenty of parking for visitors. Sherrill and George Bull, owners of Antiques and the Arts are examples of the visionaries and other folks that have invested in their businesses and the downtown area to benefit everyone for decades to come. Many of the local historians showcase the history, culture and technology unique to McMinnville. Attractions adorn this beautifully landscaped region, including the popular Cumberland Caverns, compared to Carlsbad in splendor and caves. They are open to the public for tours and are also the home of the internationally known Bluegrass Underground. Falcon Rest, a nationally acclaimed historic site, offers tours, events, meals and overnight retreats. Golfing is superb at The Reserve at Collins River and at nearby Fall Creek Falls State Park. Rock Island is another of Tennessee’s best kept secrets with camping, hiking, swimming, boating, fishing, picnicking, kayaking, rock climbing, and so much more. Visit downtown McMinnville and stroll down the lovely streets, eat the best fried chicken around or enjoy the best salad bar in the region filled with the locally grown hydroponic lettuce at City Café Tell Jr. that “Annie” sent you. Enjoy the hospitality of this marvelous southern downtown area and take a look around this remarkable region. Visit the Chamber website at www.WarrenTN.com or give them a call at 931.473.6611.
McMinnville today is known as the “Nursery Capital of the World” which came about in part due to the rebuilding after the war, water-driven mills, accessible waterways and a unique combinations of elevations, fertile soil, abundant water and mild weather. FallAntiques Creek Falls andVisitor the Arts Guide One of America’s favorite pastimes is shopping and having a one of a kind experience. This is something that you can easily find at Antiques and the Arts in downtown McMinnville, TN. Owner Sherrill Bull has never met a stranger. She welcomes her guests with her infectious smile and warm personality - like many in the Fall Creek Falls (FCF) region. Sherrill and husband, George - who owns and operates George Bull Band Instruments (located at Antiques and the Arts) - opened their business four years ago for the love of what they both do. Sherrill offers an eclectic array of antiques, some rare pieces, primitive and antique furniture, estate jewelry, vintage clothing, hats and accessories, collectibles, antique dolls, and a high quality instrument section offered by George. Sherrill also proudly displays and highlights local stoneware potter Dorinda Watts. Dorinda has refined her talents to offer a wide selection of serving pieces, casserole dishes, cornbread bakers, mugs, vases, and decorative pieces for any kitchen, home or special gift. Sherrill loves to show her guests around or offer her visitors space to browse and take in all of her treasures. She can tender advice for your home or make recommendations for a special gift, and loves to tell about her love of McMinnville and the FCF region, and some of the special events in the county. Sherrill moved to McMinnville over ten years ago and has lovingly rallied the businesses in downtown McMinnville together in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce and City Government to make downtown McMinnville a destination for shopping, eating, and socializing. Sadly, many downtown areas in the United States have been forever lost. However, in some cases, like Historic Downtown McMinnville, they have been revitalized to offer a vibrant community. Antiques and the Arts is a celebration of love, timeless treasures, memorabilia, and culture captured within the many eras of treasures. In addition to this vast collection, George’s wonderful love of music offers a charming addition to the store through the harmonious sounds of his new and classic instruments. He is an instrument connoisseur and highly skilled professional who loves to share his passion for music with others. He can often be found playing in the oldest community band in Tennessee (the “Silver and Gold” band which was founded in 1886) playing several performances a year. George offers clarinet and saxophone lessons to those eager to learn. He specializes in stocking woodwind and brass musical instruments on all levels, including student, intermediate, and professional instruments. He also offers repairs and music accessories, including music books, vintage sheet music, mouthpieces and reeds along with cleaning and maintenance supplies. George’s areas of specialty also include selling and taking care of quality band instruments which are available for purchase or rent. Our sons, Grant and Blake, recently took up guitar lessons with Sam Bailey of Livingston, TN. George fixed us up with a guitar on the rent to own program. One of my favorite pieces are the melodious lamps - wildly popular custom built lamps out of guitars, clarinets, flutes or other instruments. This one-of-a-kind collection of Melodious Lamps is perfect for a special room, guest bedroom, music room or a great gift for that musician in your family or circle of friends. Antiques and the Arts is definitely the heart of the McMinnville merchants. It is often a meeting place for those visiting, the community, and the place to find that special gift or accessory for your home or vacation home. Come in and experience Antiques and the Arts and say “hello” to Sherrill and George. Stay a while and visit and don’t forget to tell them that “Annie sent you”! Antiques and the Arts can be visited at 121 East Main St., online at www.AntiquesAndTheArtsTN.com,or by phoning 931-507-9811.

Falcon Rest Mansion & Gardens Falcon Rest is a southern classic gem located in McMinnville, TN, less than an hour’s drive from Fall Creek Falls State Park. This beautiful, 10,000 square foot Victorian mansion has been called “Tennessee’s Biltmore” by PBS. Thousands of tourists visit each year to take in its history and splendor, but also have fun doing so. Fun is the theme for the daily guided mansion tours, as well as the entertaining shows that Falcon Rest offers for tour groups. The mansion is filled with an amazing collection of museum-quality Victorian antiques; however, the emphasis is on the interesting people who have lived there. Manufacturer Clay Faulkner built Falcon Rest in 1896 to entice his wife to move to the country (just 2-1/2 miles from downtown McMinnville) to be closer to his woolen mill across the road.
central steam heat, spring water for refrigeration and air conditioning, and even a telephone. From the 1940s through the 60s, the building served as a hospital and nursing home before being boarded up and abandoned for years. Falcon Rest was re-opened to the public in 1993, after a 4-1/2 year restoration which won the National Trust’s “Great American Home Award.” The proprietors, George and Charlien McGlothin, have devotedly restored this home. They love to share its history and beauty, as well as create a memorable experience for each visitor. Charlien is the master chef and enjoys serving seasonal meals, while making her guests feel comfortable. George came back to his hometown of McMinnville to restore this glorious mansion and to enjoy what he loves doing most - buying for his Victorian gift store and sharing the many stories about the mansion. Today the mansion is presided over by a friendly ghost – perhaps the proud builder himself. Falcon Rest is open seven days a week from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM for tours, and visitors can find a unique selection of 1890s style treasures in the Victorian Gift Shop, which has been called “an attraction in itself.” Falcon Rest’s Victorian Carriage House dining room is also a popular setting for weddings and special events. For more information, visit online at www.FalconRest.com or call 931-668-4444.
Falcon Rest’s focus on fun is to display Mr. Faulkner’s sense of humor, which was demonstrated in the way he advertised the mill’s products: Gorilla Jeans and Pants. Faulkner’s newspaper ads featured whimsical drawings of pants-wearing apes with slogans like “so strong even a gorilla couldn’t tear them apart,” and “gorilla grip; they’ll never rip.” His humor served him well and he became the richest man in this part of the country. This allowed him to build his beloved Mary a mansion that was the finest in the region. The Falcon Rest boasted three-brick-thick walls inside and out, closets, and all the “modern conveniences” – indoor plumbing, electric lights,

Plus, once a year, they have a tremendous outing at the Warren County Fair Senior Day. This year I was asked to be a judge at the Senior Day festivities. I got to experience my first “hog callers”. Now I didn’t know what to expect, but boy, hog calling is serious business! I also got to judge the sexy men and women’s legs contests. Other favorites were the “knotty knee contest” and the talent contest. I asked Cheryl to put me down for next year. I laughed all morning and it was such great fun. These individuals know how to have a good time. The Warren County Fair is a ten day event with thousands of visitors and Senior Day was a great day out for over two hundred seniors that came to experience the fun, the various contests, and eat a great, warm boxed lunch donated by one of the local doctors. The center also gives back to the community by administering the Second Harvest Food Drive once a month - serving over 200 families. They also help homebound residents with food, produce, and have a daily bread ministry. Cheryl and her team - Roxanne, Pam, and Tish to name a few, have true servants’ hearts that just keep giving with warmth, compassion, and smiles. Today, McMinnville boasts of a revitalized bustling downtown historic district full of shops, antiques, eateries, professional and government offices, and roots that go back for centuries. In its heyday, McMinnville overflowed with commerce thriving on the textile industry of the 19th century, with many doctors, lawyers, pastors and educators coming to town to build fine homes, academies, and churches in addition to first class stores, shops, and businesses. Scholars from all over the world came to McMinnville-Warren County (which was also known as a center for learning with such establishments as the Edmondson Academy and The Cumberland Female College – both were established in the early to mid 19th century). The Southern School of Photography officially opened its doors in 1904 and quickly became a Mecca for photographers from all around the world who wanted to study under the tutelage of William Spencer “Dad” Lively. McMinnville was known as one of the state’s most popular summer resorts after the Civil War. In the 1920’s, folks would flock to McMinnville to enjoy the gracious southern hospitality at the legendary Sedberry Hotel with its first-class service - for which it was named the “best little hotel on the North American Continent” in 1927 by an official from AAA. Spotlight on Sparta Sparta is a bustling little town located off of scenic Hwy. 111, between Fall Creek Falls State Park and Cookeville. It has an old time feel and prides itself on its bluegrass roots. Sparta can claim such famous musicians as Benny Martin and the legendary Lester Flatt. This genre of music is celebrated at the annual bluegrass festival, which takes place the third weekend in September. It consists of a variety of bluegrass musicians, a main bluegrass headliner, arts, crafts, fun and downtown festivities. Downtown Sparta continues to grow with the renovation of century old buildings. It has some trendy shops, eateries, antiques, quilting and sewing shops. The newly relocated Fragrant Mushroom also calls this part of town home. Cherri and Thor McNeil took the big plunge with a leap of faith this past year and bought an old 5,000 square foot building which used to be a drugstore in the 50’s. They lovingly restored it, exposing the gorgeous hardwood floors, brick walls and adding some fashionable colors with Thor’s lights and some chic accessories. The Fragrant Mushroom also offers handcrafted jewelry by notable artists such as April Price and “You’ve got Maille” - designer chainmaille and wire wrapped jewelry. Karen Ross Walton displays her very popular one-of-a-kind handbags. The Fragrant Mushroom just celebrated their ten year anniversary and Cherri and Thor look back and reminisce at their journey. Cherri, originally from Sparta, moved back from Knoxville in 1999 and opened the store more as a studio and showroom. Today, ten years later, both Thor and Cherri enjoy their new space and continue to sell to wholesalers, tourists, and repeat clients. Spotlight Fall Creek onFalls Foglight Visitor Foodhouse Guide Foglight Foodhouse is a charming restaurant located in Walling, TN. Chef Edward Philpot has been cooking up his delightful signature “dish of the day” for twelve years now. He opened the restaurant in January 1997 with his twin brother, Paul, and older brother, Ian. The three brothers put their careers on hold while taking care of their ailing terminally ill mother, Jill, which brought the brothers back to Walling. The time that they spent together while caring for their mom was a rich time, allowing the brothers to catch up and get to know each other as adults. This led them to brainstorm about what they could do during this time and the Foglight was born. The Foglight Foodhouse was created on a shoestring budget and was an immediate success with folks coming from all over, just by word of mouth. Edward (a.k.a. Eduardo) smiles lovingly at those early memories, and wistfully remembers his late mother and her love in the kitchen. Jill had a very successful catering business in Cookeville, TN and believed that if you were old enough to ask questions, you were old enough to help. Edward obviously asked lots of questions, and loved to help his mother. He loves both the creative and the technical side of cooking, since graduating culinary school in Lexington, KY. Today he and his wife, Pam, are the sole owners of the business. The Foglight Foodhouse serves guests Tuesday through Saturday with delicious gourmet food in a casual, but eclectic atmosphere. The Foglight is perched upon a hill overlooking Rock Island, the old but still functioning railroad bridge, and the beautiful flowing Caney Fork River. Edward and his professional team of

servers love to entertain, create memories, and serve their guests in their outside and inside dining rooms, where 130 folks can dine on the delicious specials. My family and I enjoyed a sour apple marinated braised pecan encrusted pork loin served over a generous portion of homemade mashed potatoes, ginger snap gravy and sugar snap peas. Blake had a delicious queen cut rib eye steak cooked to perfection. Terry loved his chicken Alfredo pasta served with a fresh mixed green salad with Portobello balsamic vinaigrette dressing. Patrons love to bring their favorite bottle of wine or beer along to compliment their meal and the Foglight Foodhouse has the appropriate glasses and ice if you wish. This is a delightful restaurant with a splendid reputation for excellent food, great service and ambience throughout the year with great views – perfect for any occasion. They have a special room available to seat approximately 30 people equipped with a digital projector for meetings. Walling, TN is located between the Fall Creek Falls State Park and McMinnville, TN near Rock Island State Park and across the river from Cotten’s Marina. Come see why Edward has been featured in many national magazines such as the National Geographic, Tennessee Crossroads, Entrée and others. Stop by and say hello to Chef Edward and tell him that “Annie” sent you. Bon Appetit! Hours of operation are Tuesday through Thursday 5pm to 8pm and Friday and Saturday 5pm to 9pm. Rock Fall Island Creek Bay Falls & Supreme Visitor Guide Building Rock Island Bay is one of the newest developments in the Fall Creek Falls region offering eleven beautiful river view lots with awesome panoramic views of the Caney Fork and Rocky Rivers. The majestic mountains of the Cumberland Plateau dot the background. One of my favorite finds this year has been the Rock Island area. There is no doubt that this is the best kept secret east of Nashville. Many Nashvillians have found out about this river haven and spend many lazy summer days with family and friends. Rock Island Bay, owned and developed by the Moore Family, owners of Supreme Building Products in McMinnville, TN has built their business since 1963 upon service and quality. The development is ideally situated with views not only of one of the three beloved rivers (Caney, Rocky and Collins) that meander through this valley and on into Center Hill Lake, but two of the rivers – the Caney Fork and the Rocky Rivers. Each lot has a hundred feet of waterfront views. Many of the residents have boathouses and custom built decks that encompass their boat slips, outdoor living area, diving board, and slides for the children’s enjoyment, as well as fantastic views of the waterways.
doors, Trekx decking, paint, hardware, great showrooms, and most name brands. Rock Island Bay is a testimony to their attention to quality workmanship in a quality development. There are outstanding parcels of land in this very desirable Rock Island area, with close proximity to Fall Creek Falls, Rock Island State Park, and boat launching at Cotten’s Marina or from your own private boathouse. Rock Island Bay is less than two hours from Chattanooga, Nashville and Knoxville - perfect for a weekend getaway or a second home for summer vacations and family gatherings over the holidays. Visit Rock Island Bay and take a look around this idyllic river life! Stop by Cotten’s Marina, say hello to Greg and Sherry and have a cheeseburger or quesadilla alfresco style on their awesome river deck. Or drive to beautiful McMinnville and stop in at Supreme and meet the family! See why so many generations have used Supreme Building Products for their building needs, advice, and quality materials. You can visit Rock Island Bay at www.RockIslandBay.com or Supreme’s website, www.SupremeBuilding.com.
Quality builder Waymon Hale built the first home at Rock Island Bay. This showcase home has over 4,000 square feet, the finest craftsmanship using top rated materials, amazing views, and over 1,000 square feet of outdoor living areas from multiple levels of outside decks and enclosed porch areas. Another key feature of Rock Island Bay is natural gas! All homes have access to city water and natural gas, one of the special amenities unique to Rock Island Bay. Rock Island Bay showcases Supreme’s long family heritage of the utmost service which has awarded them with over two hundred fifty million dollars worth of top quality building materials on jobsites throughout Middle Tennessee. Their business has been built around long lasting relationships and Supreme Building Products treats every customer like they are at home. The Supreme team offers not only quality materials, but also masonry, engineered doors, roofing, doors and windows, including Peachtree windows and Toll Free 888-462-2730 / www.Go2FCF.com

Annie’s Fall Creek Travels Fallsand Visitor Treasures Guide One of the Fall Creek Falls region’s hidden gems is Cotten’s Marina - a charming, “Jimmy Buffet” style marina with a public boat dock. Weekenders from Nashville have known about this slice of heaven for decades. Families and retirees love the summer ambience and have built multifamily weekend homes, vacation homes, and retirement homes right on the river to enjoy the serene river lifestyle. The atmosphere reminds me of something like Cape Cod or the Hamptons on the east coast. Cotten’s Marina is the only fullservice marina and boat storage on the Caney Fork River and the Cotten family has created a warm, fun atmosphere offering pontoon and boat rentals, kayaks, and river cottage rentals. They have an awesome restaurant that serves up delicious cheeseburgers, Philly steak sandwiches, and my favorite - chicken quesadillas. Their restaurant is open for lunch and dinner. They also have amazing patio river dining with beautiful flowers and plants adorning the deck, and some of the tables shaded by big sun umbrellas. The Caney Fork, Rocky, and Collins Rivers upstream offer 35-40 miles of navigable waterway for cruising, fishing, relaxing, and swimming. Cotten’s Marina is within a stone’s throw of the “Rock Island” which is the nearest center landmark in TN, hence the name of Rock Island State Park just down the road. Fishermen love to fish the waterways for species such as Kentucky largemouth bass, black and white crappie, walleye, bluegills and catfish. Owner Greg Cotten has built 37 aluminum FDI docks, and some custom wood and steel boat storage docks since he and his wife, Sherry, took over the marina. Some have multiple slips with patios, summer garden cooking areas, slides, and sunning areas for the sun bathers. This is true outdoor river living, where residents love to enjoy the beauty and nature all around. The river residents love to celebrate every 4th of July. They decorate their docks, bath houses, and boats. They then have a parade down the river. July 4th 2009, was celebrated with BBQ’s, fireworks and celebrations all along the waterways. Come over to Cotten’s Marina and meet some of the nicest folks. Enjoy a burger, fries, and a cold drink and view the historic railroad bridge that is still in operation today. This is an “Annie’s” favorite. Such an unexpected, yet pleasant surprise on our journey to the Fall Creek Falls State Park one hot summer day! Cotten’s Marina can be contacted through their website, www.CottensMarina.com or by phone at 931-686-2373.
and serving others at special events such as weddings, reunions and private gatherings. Pete and Bambi also love to entertain at their ranch, too. Special events are their area of expertise, such as weddings, small business retreats, and family reunions. They have several cabins to rent and love to cook for larger groups of overnight guests of ten or more. If you would like to play cowboy for the weekend, let the “horse whisperer” Pete take you out on a trail ride, train your horse, or give you lessons. For more information, pricing, or to have them cater your next event, contact their website at www.fireflyacres.com or call them at 931-946-7383. Fire House Grill has unbelievable baby back ribs! They had my Mom, Gisela/“Oma”, drooling for more during her recent stay at Grandview Cabins at Fall Creek Falls. While there, she wanted to see the Fall Creek Falls and after a delightful day of hiking and exploring the area, she was hungry. Her wish was some BBQ from the Fire House Grill. She said that she was craving some good ribs. Now, Oma is from Germany and loves great food. She was looking forward to some excellent, mouthwatering, fall off the bone, meaty ribs. Needless to say, she found exactly what she wanted at the Fire House Grill. The meat was tender and smoky, and the sauce was superb. We enjoyed some great sides such as homemade coleslaw, beans, and potato salad, too. Get there early, as word is getting out about the high quality BBQ ribs, pork and chicken. Fire House Grill also has indoor seating if you wish to sit down and have your meal inside. Come over and enjoy. Tel: 423-881-5118. Penny’s General Store is one of my favorite new stores in the Fall Creek Falls region - just minutes from the north entrance of the park. Penny and Brian Roman bought the store four years ago and after much work, opened the store in April 2009. Penny has always wanted an oldtime general store. After collecting antiques and collectibles, scouring flea markets and estate sales, she has made her dream come true in Penny’s General Store. This store is amazing with its selection of high quality items including primitive antique furniture and an amazing collection of antique mixing bowls in all shapes and colors. Estate and vintage jewelry and Trisha Waldron’s beautiful designer jewelry make great gifts. Penny’s also offers metal memorabilia (new and old), older comic books, hillbilly items, gift items, and a great selection of collector knives and guns. Penny’s General Store is an authorized Case Knife dealer and carries a wide selection. I was quite impressed with the merchandising in beautiful pine cabinets, shelves and custom built cabinetry throughout the store. Penny said that her husband, Brian, built all of them from pine trees that they were able to salvage from the nine acres around the store. His craftsmanship is superb and I believe that he could sell this cabinetry to many of the folks moving in! Penny’s General Store is probably the only destination within the Fall Creek Falls region with
While at the Long Branch Lakes Discovery Weekend, I met the delightful folks from Firefly Acres – Pete and Bambi Dillingham. Two and a half years ago they combined their passions and created Firefly Acres located off of Highway 285 in Sparta, TN. Bambi was working at the Hyatt Marriot in Food Service and Hospitability and Pete left his riding stable to create one of the best catering outfits and full service ranches in the Fall Creek Falls region. Bambi loves to cook and her food is proof of her talent and generosity. I had the good fortune of sampling their barbecued ribs, tangy ginger teriyaki chicken, homemade potato salad, and the most delicious tangy coleslaw I have ever eaten. All of this was topped off with scrumptious desserts. It sort of reminds me of Emeril’s cooking, where everything has been “moved up a notch” - fresh ingredients, unique spices and herbs and a fantastic presentation style. Annie’s Fall Creek Travels Fallsand Visitor Treasures Guide Coconut, Dark Expresso, Peanut Butter, and Maple Nut to name just a few. There are several sugar-free versions that will delight the diabetic or those watching their sugar intake. The décor of the Sweet Shop creates a warm and inviting atmosphere through the rich reds, decadent restored hardwood floors, vintage signage and décor throughout. There are plenty of seats in the Sweet Shop to enjoy a fresh brewed cup of coffee or a refreshing glass of lemonade along with a piece of chocolate as you enjoy a stroll down Main St. The Flower Basket’s former owner, Ms. Claudene Ray, wanted to preserve the shop’s deep roots in McMinnville. So in 2006, when she sold The Flower Basket to the Witt’s, she knew that her tradition of service would continue for years to come. The Witt’s, like much of McMinnville, take great pride in their heritage, service, and values. The Flower Basket originated in 1947 in the famous Sedberry Hotel, which was known all around the country. Today, the old Sedberry Hotel sign can still be seen from the present location of The Flower Basket & Sweet Shop. They also offer gift items, furniture and place settings - perfect gifts for the bride and groom. Any of several professional photographers to capture your special moment can be arranged. hand dipped ice cream being sold from an old fashioned ice cream truck throughout the summer months and authentic bluegrass, country, or gospel music playing in the parking lot - like the day I was visiting. Take a look around and enjoy one of the newest stores in the Fall Creek Falls region. Penny’s hours are from 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM CST Tuesday through Sunday. The store is closed on Monday. Penny and Brian can be reached at 423-881-5362. City Café reminds me of our local main street diner where I grew up in Michigan. I always loved to go and sit on those round diner stools and get an order of French fries and a coke. I would take the plastic ketchup container and douse my French fries then eat them one by one. Of course, most times, mom and dad didn’t know where I was, as I would ride my bicycle to town and take a look around at the five and dime stores. City Café is the diner in downtown McMinnville where shoppers flock to have a cup of coffee and a piece of homemade pie, and business owners and professionals from around the downtown district come and get their lunch or breakfast. I love City Café’s fried chicken and salad bar. My reasoning is that if you have a piece of succulent fried chicken, the salad bar will compensate for the calories. City Café definitely has an excellent salad bar with fresh ingredients such as fresh baby hydroponic grown mixed baby green salad, spinach, sliced beets, pickled green tomatoes, radishes, homemade salads and fresh homemade salad dressings. The plates are cold at the bar and there is always a soup of the day for those soup and chili lovers! Owners, Penny and Jr. Medley, pride themselves, along with their thirteen employees, in offering quick, courteous service with southern hospitality and quality food. I recently used the City Café to cater an event at the McMinnville-Warren County Senior Center, one of my favorite community centers on the plateau, and the fried chicken and coleslaw were huge hits! City Café can cater any event, large or small, and will deliver hot and fresh. City Café is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Their dinner menu, offered Monday through Friday consists of an intimate dinner atmosphere, grilled steaks, Atlantic salmon, loaded baked potatoes, and daily specials. The muted lighting and great menu offers a great place for evening dining and a perfect place for a date, special occasion or just a night out. City Café is located at 201 E. Main Street and can be contacted at, 931-507-FOOD.
Pluto’s Hotdogs is a delightful 1960’s feel diner located on Bockman Way in downtown Sparta. They serve great all beef hotdogs, real home cooking, and a terrific ambience. My roots go back to Motown in Detroit where Coney Dogs are served many different ways; with chili, onions, relish, pickles, jalapeños, etc. Pluto’s Hotdogs brings back so many memories for me. Pluto’s is a great way to end your shopping or day outing in the region. Jeannie and Ray moved here from California 14 years ago. Aaron, their son, had a strong desire to open a good quality hot dog restaurant. Today, Pluto’s is a fun, wholesome hotdog diner where Aaron and his family love to serve all their hungry diners. Their signature all beef hotdogs can be dressed many different ways using the freshest ingredients, some available from local farmers. My favorite is the hotdog loaded with chili, onions, and cheese slathered with mustard and ketchup. This requires lots of napkins and for me a knife and fork! My husband, Terry, dug into the taco salad that was loaded with lots of nacho chips, meat, and other fresh ingredients on top of the salad, dressed with salsa and sour cream. This is a delightful place to come and relax. Bring your computer because wi-fi is available and pop a few quarters into the jukebox for some 5060’s music. Pluto’s is open from 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM Tuesday through Saturday and if you have a “to go” order, call ahead and have your order ready to take with you to the office, cabin, boat or wherever. Enjoy the perfect, wholesome Pluto’s Hotdogs and tell them that “Annie” sent you. Pluto’s tel: 931-83-PLUTO.

He is a bit modest about his culinary ability, but he has been featured on the local television cooking show and loves to entertain and make his guests feel very welcome. The Inn at Harvest Farms Lake is located close to the Fall Creek Falls area, downtown McMinnville, and less than an hour from one of Tennessee’s favorites - Jack Daniels Distillery in Lynchburg, TN. They love the Christmas season and have over twelve Christmas trees decorated throughout their spacious home. To make the gentlemen feel at home while their ladies shop, Cheryl’s husband keeps a special space upstairs with a TV, couch, and magazines (his) where they can have some time to enjoy their visit too. Among the many classes available in 2010, she will be offering a class featuring the Janome 1100 embroidery machine – a Block of the Month Quilt. This machine is simple and easy to use. Everyone (no matter your level of expertise) is sure to have a great time. There are 3 requirements for any class or event at Simply Southern Quilts. 1) It must be relatively simple so all levels of experience can enjoy their time there. 2) Laughter is a MUST. 3) Chocolate must also be on hand. They offer that good old fashioned fun of watching a movie from the comfort of your car. After working there for many years, Tommy and Judy Brown decided to buy the Sparta Drive-In in 2008. It is a fun, family atmosphere with a children’s playground area, kitchen offering delicious 8 ounce T&T burgers, hotdogs, chicken, Frito pies, and of course scrumptious popcorn. Popcorn and candy are essentials to any movie night out and their team of eight employees keep the patrons happy with fresh popped buttery popcorn and soda. Drive-ins bring back memories for many baby boomers who used to take their dates out for a special evening and hope to steal a kiss or two! Today the Sparta Drive-In offers this nostalgia, with an affordable, fun and safe entertainment space for families. The prices are very affordable and, at the time of printing, the cost to watch two movies is $5.00 per adult, $2.00 per child, and children under the age of 5 are free. Come plenty early, as Tommy said that folks start lining up around 4:00 PM to get their chance of getting those first row aisle seats! The Sparta Drive-In has two movies and the movies generally start around 8:15 PM CST (or when it gets dark). They can hold up to 270 automobiles. If you have a vintage car, bring it over on a Saturday, and you get 50% off of the normal ticket price. Sparta Drive-In is conveniently located just north of Sparta off of Hwy. 111, approximately thirty minutes from the Fall Creek Falls State Park. Sparta Drive-In is located at 220 Roberts Matthew Hwy, Sparta, TN 38583 and can be contacted at tel: 931-739-8000 or www.SpartaDriveIn.com.
The Reserve at Collins River is a beautiful sprawling 450 acre development that hugs the picturesque, softly flowing Collins River, with gently rolling hills, mountain ranges, abundant wildlife and a beautiful championship golf course. The majestic homes in this development have tremendous views overlooking some of the most beautiful mountain ranges of the Cumberland Plateau, including Harris Ferry, Caldwell and the Ben Lomand mountain ranges. Some of the homes overlook the golf course and offer the peace and tranquility for which the Fall Creek Falls region is known. Founders of The Reserve at Collins River, Dwight and Hannah O’Neal, bought the family farm and acreage from his parents in the 1990’s. Dwight knew this land well - every curve and every bend. After raising their two sons, Joe and Chris, he says that he had a vision for this rich land that included a golf course and development to offer beautiful home sites which would allow others to treasure this land as much as he does. The nine hole golf course opened in July of 2006 with a clubhouse grille, plus fantastic panoramic views from the wraparound porch

They have many tournaments throughout the year, including the Troy Jones Memorial held the first Saturday of September. This tournament honors a local retired high school coach, teacher, principal and golf fan that had a tremendous impact on his students’ lives. He watched the golf course being built and a month before the course opened, he died of a massive heart attack. Golf rates for nine holes of gold plus a cart start out with winter rates of $16.00 and in peak season, weekend rates are an affordable $25.00 (at press time – rates are subject to change). The Reserve at Collins River offers unprecedented value and they are conveniently located near downtown McMinnville and less than one hour from Chattanooga and Nashville and about two hours from Knoxville or Atlanta. The Reserve at Collins River offers the best of both worlds country living with accessibility to the metropolitan areas. By 1937 the project had progressed along nicely. Most of the 16,000 acres had been purchased (at an average of $6.50 per acre) or was under option, the road in from Highway 30 had been improved, a headquarters had been constructed, and work was progressing on a group camp (today, Camp 1). However, the road over to Fall Creek Falls was years away, and there was no camping area for individuals or families. That same year, the National Park Service had second thoughts about their plan of turning the area over to the State of Tennessee. At the urging of Conrad With, assistant director of the N.P.S., a committee of park professionals was sent to Fall Creek Falls to evaluate it for inclusion as part of the National Park System. They arrived in late June, and in what must have been a very dry Summer, most of the storied waterfalls were either flowing at a trickle, or dry altogether. They were especially disappointed to find Fall Creek Falls dry. They decided that the original plan of turning the area over to the State should be followed through. Some other interesting suggestions this committee made was to suggest a name change to “Caney Gulf” Park to highlight the tremendous canyons in the Park. Another suggestion they made was to increase the size of the Park to 52,000 acres and acquire more of the watershed of the park to help with water quality and to improve the flow of the waterfalls (much of the upper drainage of Fall Creek and Cane Creek had apparently been heavily logged). They also suggested adding areas such as Dry Fork Gulf to the Park, because of its size and beauty. In 1944, plans to turn the area over to the State were carried out, and Fall Creek Falls National Recreation Demonstration Area became Fall Creek Falls State Park. The area, unfortunately, was never increased to the proposed 52,000 acres. “Caney Creek Gulf” as the suggested name was dropped, and Fall Creek Falls kept. But the Federal Government recognized they were transferring an area of superlative beauty and recreational value, and so they put a reversionary clause in the deed transferring the land to the State. This reversionary clause states: “this deed is made upon the express conditions that the State of Tennessee shall use the said property exclusively for public park, recreational, and conservation purposes…and that the title and right to possession of said lands…shall revert to the United States of America upon a finding…that the State has not complied with the aforesaid conditions….”. The deed was signed by Harold Ickes, Secretary of Interior, 4th day of May, 1944.
Fall Creek Falls State Park celebrates its 75th birthday in 2010. It was in 1935 that the National Park Service began purchasing the land that would become the Park. The Park was not created in one fell swoop—it continues to grow to this day, keep in mind that the drive to create a Park here had begun years before. The 1930’s were the years of the Great Depression. After inauguration in 1933, Franklin Delano Roosevelt pushed through the Economic Relief Act, which created agencies such as the Civilian Conservation Corps (the C.C.C.), and the Works Project Administration (the W.P.A.). These groups were tasked with not only putting people back to work, but also to set aside and develop parks. In other places, where the landscape was scarred from overuse and abuse, they moved in to fix the erosion with waterbars and to plant an often bleak landscape with trees, shrubs, and grasses. Work was started on setting aside this area in the Spring of 1935, with the official name of the project being “Fall Creek Falls National Recreation Demonstration Area”. Southern Fall CreekMuseum Falls Visitor & Galleries Guide Recently, I discovered a wonderfully unique destination located on East Main St. in downtown McMinnville, TN. The Southern Museum & Galleries of Photography, Culture & History captures the essence of McMinnville, its history (including that of one of McMinnville’s legendary photographers), and its heyday. The museum was created and opened in November 2001 by Monty Wanamaker and Chris Keathley. Monty and Chris have crafted an outstanding museum; highlighted by the purchase of the “Steamboat” Cassetty Estate - a broad collection of photographs, photography, equipment, memorabilia, and artifacts which portray legendary Mr. William Spencer “Dad” Lively.
country, he felt his mission was to strive to teach professional photographers to be more than merely takers of pictures, but to attempt to create art with their camera. Mr. Lively gained great recognition and accolades in the photography world and received a request from Eastman Kodak Company to make a number of pictures for a national exhibition in 1909. One of three original images has since been displayed in the collections of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. and the Eastman National Museum of Photography in Rochester, NY. Of course, the Southern Museum & Galleries of Photography, Culture & History have two images on permanent display. You can view three, rare original Lumier Auto-Chromes (early color images) from circa 1913, along with some of the original glass plate negatives of Mr. Lively. There is also available for viewing, one of the early slide projectors from circa 1916 in addition to many other antique cameras and equipment. This wonderful collection with the historical timeline shows how technology has rapidly changed and how passion and dedication can change the way in which an art form is viewed, learned and duplicated. The Southern Museum & Galleries of Photography, Culture & History also have a Dottie West Collection (country music star and McMinnville native). A small gift shop features historical books, prints, note cards, original artworks by local artists, and some beautiful Susan DeMay pottery and jewelry. The Museum and Gift Shop are open to the public Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, CST and by appointment. Admission is free. Tel: 931-507-8102 or email

Monty Wanamaker was born and raised in McMinnville and like most young men traveled out of state to follow his dream of the arts. Monty lived and worked in New York City, but returned in the 80’s, after working among some of the best artists around. He contributed and worked at one of the first galleries of modern art in NYC, where he utilized his talents of writing and art, along with his excellent people skills. Monty gained tremendous skills and techniques while there and obtained a vast knowledge which is now apparent in the Southern Museum & Galleries of Photography, Culture & History. After purchasing the collection from the Cassetty Estate and meeting Chris Keathley, the two budding artists have created a labor of love; offering visitors, historians and photographers a tremendous walk down the photography and historical timeline. What makes this museum special are the tremendous collections of photographic equipment, the history of photography, and the tribute to Mr. Lively whose contribution is a national treasure to the Art Photographic scene. If you have followed the progression of photography over the last 100 plus years, you will immediately realize how significant this museum is for photographers worldwide. Students from all over the world would travel to McMinnville, TN in the early twentieth century to learn and study photography at The Southern School of Photography with Mr. William Spencer Lively. Mr. Lively and his two sons started the school in 1904 - one of only two schools of photography in the United States at the time. Mr. Lively was passionate about photography and after lecturing, demonstrating, and presenting his work in exhibitions throughout the DALE HOLLOW MARKETING GROUP, LLC

Day Fall Creek Trips to Falls Dale Visitor Hollow Guide Lake Dale Hollow Lake (DHL) offers abundant water recreation, houseboating, trophy fishing, camping, cabin rentals and relaxation within ninety minutes of the Fall Creek Falls region. DHL’s expansive waters wind around 620 miles of pristine shoreline with numerous coves for unique, quiet, and secluded getaways. DHL is managed by the Corps of Engineers and was founded in the 1940’s upon land where hundreds of families farmed this fertile area. They were forced to leave their beloved valley to make way for DHL. Today the lake is visited by over 3.4 million people every year. Many families have been enjoying the spectacular waters for many generations.
campsites available around the lake. The swimming is spectacular from either the safe and secure swimming area or from your boat. Pontoon and houseboat rentals are a perfect weekend or week vacation for families that are looking to enjoy the lake and the many water activities. Come see why DHL has been rated as one of the top 10 places in the US by USA Today to “Float Your Houseboat”. With gas hovering around $2.50 per gallon (at time of printing), several families sharing the cost of the rental makes this a very affordable and memorable vacation option. The DHL region is blessed with rolling hills, beautiful pasture land, lots of horse ranches and farms that have been lovingly tended to for centuries. The eagles love to nest at DHL in the winter and those who enjoy the Corps of Engineers annual eagle watch barge trip in January brave the cold and frigid weather to witness this majestic bird in its natural habitat. DHL is entertaining all year round. Fishing in the winter is excellent. It is also a great time to rent a cabin and snuggle next to a roaring fire enjoying a book, cup of hot chocolate and just rest far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It is the perfect destination for family reunions, girls’ getaways, weddings, small meetings and so much more.
DHL is known for its trophy fishing and still holds the world record for the largest smallmouth bass caught in July 1955 by Mr. D.L. Hayes. This whopping smallmouth bass weighed 11 lbs. and 15 ounces! Diehard fishermen from all over the world have been trying to top this record for decades. In fact, DHL holds three records in the top 10 for smallmouth bass, highlighting the excellent fishing available. DHL also offers great pan fishing for bluegill, crappie, trout, muskie, catfish and largemouth bass. There are many local, regional and national tournaments on this great lake each year. Paradise has never been so affordable. Bring this ad and we will give you nine holes of free play! If you’re a non-golfer and would just like to tour the property, we will set you up with a sandwich and drink from our clubhouse grille when you bring your copy of this ad in!
The Reserve at Collins River is offering unprecedented opportunities for ownership in our development at prices you will not believe! Many of us dream of living in a quiet, unhurried, hospitable community. We crave the peaceful lifestyle enjoyed by our ancestors. That lifestyle can be yours by becoming a homeowner at The Reserve at Collins River. Our homesites are situated on the flank of the gorgeous Harrison Ferry mountain, lying along the banks of the gently flowing Collins River. More than 450 acres of, virtually pristine Tennessee real estate have been transformed into a challenging, championship golf course that follows the contours of the original terrain and is ringed by generously portioned homesites.
