Fact Family Project

This project is due on _____________. Projects will not be accepted after 7 days pass the due date. This means your child will receive a zero if the allotted time expires and/or the project is not turned in. Materials: 1. Poster Board or Construction Paper 2. Pencil, Makers, or Colored Pencils Instructions: Fact Family Homes: Fact families can be a difficult concept for students to understand, so here is an activity to help them master the concept. First, I teach students that in a fact family, there are four number sentences, which use only the three numbers. For example: 2,4,6 make up a fact family which looks something like this: 2+4=6

6-4=2

4+2=6

6-2=4

The students learn that the same three numbers are used throughout the fact family and that they just change spots when they go into another number sentence. After this lesson (which takes between 1-2 days), the students then create homes for the fact families. Here is an illustration of what their fact family homes will look like: Students must create 8 houses for their projects and select the numbers that go on the roof of the house. Then they have to write the two addition and two subtraction sentences. Rubric: 1. The student created 8 fact family houses. 2. The fact family numbers are correct because the addends must equal the sum.

3. The students presentation is neat and organized 4. The parent must place their signature on the back of the project.
