Experiential Report (Audio – Video Techniques)

1

Last November 24, 2005 was the first time we visited the FM station DWRR located at the ABSCBN compound. But we failed to come as a group because Renz Roa does not able to come with us. Prior to that visit, it was morning of that same day; our group together with some of the students from other group had merged to visit DZRH, an AM station located at the MBC Building near Aliw Theater and Star City at Roxas Boulevard. We arrived there at about 10AM and waited for a while. There we met Mr. Deo Macalma, the Assistant Station Manager of the radio station. We had a short interview with him to know some of the facts about their station. Then he toured us to the announcer’s booth wherein he showed us their “unique” facilities such as the touch screen computers that costs a fortune. Then after visiting the announcer’s booth we proceeded to the “on air studio” wherein the recording of the radio drama series “Gabi ng Lagim” is being done. Those people are really amazing. They had even exerted fewer efforts to portray their respective roles. I mean, they are professionals and for the students like us who are just beginners, we salute them for having such a wonderful and amazing job – dubbing. Let’s now proceed to our group’s designated station –DWRR 101.9. It was 3 o’clock in the afternoon of that same day when our group gathered together in McDonalds, Quezon Avenue, where we had our final preparations and then after that, our group headed to the location - the ABSCBN compound. The first time we went to DWRR, we’ve met Disc Jockey China Heart. His voice on the radio somewhat shows his identity – a big man. We then started the interview and we found out that he was from the University of Sto.Tomas and he applied for the job when he was on his second year. Fortunate he was, for he was then employed in the station. We asked him some questions with regards to the equipments used in the booth. He acquainted us with the equipments used in their station. So from there we’ve seen their 2

mixer, their OTS juke, the audio vault, speaker monitors, CD & MD players, the CD racks filled with record albums from artists, and the microphones they’re using. He informed us on their functions of course. Their OTS is a touch screen computer used for storing the songs for the programs but then they have told us that they sill needed to use the mouse to operate the device. The Audio vault is another touch screen device and it is better than the OTS. As they have informed us, the equipment costs more than $30,000. That’s about 2 million Pesos! They also have the Genelec Speakers that costs $30,000 each, and it produces better sound quality needed for the radio station. They are not using the cds and mds anymore for they have the the touch screen computers already. He also told us about their satellite located in Antipolo. They did not allow us to take pictures of their equipments. Their reason: they’re on a competition and they were instructed not to allow anyone to take pictures of the equipments. So we go home with no pictures at all. How sad… We went back to the radio station after some weeks for we don’t have with us the information we needed other than their equipments. We thought that we would be complete this time but our irregular classmate Cheeno Orbida failed to come because he is not informed. Our visit was scheduled 6PM, so after our Monday classes, we hurriedly proceed to Quezon Avenue. Before that, we drop by the Gateway Mall to buy some goodies for us to express our gratefulness to them. We waited for a while inside the fan area of the WRR, then after a while, their station Manager arrived.

This time we’ve met not just DJ Don

Henry but also Mr. Eli Bruce Capuyan, the radio station manager of DWRR. We had an interview with Sir Eli before we entered the booth. He told us the history and some of the facts about the radio station:

ALAM MO NA ‘YAN! WRR101.9 For Life

As what we’ve said earlier, Mr. Eli is the Fm station manager and he has about 17 staffs, so 18 in all including himself. And their sole responsibility is the DWRR station only, and its operations as well like the programming, creative etc.

6

On the other hand, Mr. Angelo Palmones is the Station Manager for DZMM, and their responsibility is concentrating only on DZMM am station and its operations. For the production, engineering, sales issues, there are different departments responsible for that, and the people behind the DWRR and DZMM are solely independent and minding their own businesses.
