A proposal for the presentation of Year 4 semester 1 design studio

2 sites, 1 theme: Productive Land

The Idea... to present this semesters work to the people of Limerick City and its surounds, to pass on the information we have gained in this process and to present our projects as new ways of seeing the city. The hope is to encourage a different attitude to land, food, and its production.

The theme for this semester, productive land, provides an opportunity to illustrate to the people of Limerick the possibilities that exist within the city for the more productive and efficient use of land. The sites chosen are state owned and currently underused and undervalued. Our projects propose using these sites in a very different way. There is an opportunity to show people potential that they might never have seen. Many students have proposed using the land for the production of fruit and vegetables. This is a somewhat unusual use of land within the city bounds. However, as the distances our food travels to get to us become of increasing public concern it represents an appealing situation. Limerick’s problem of a continuously diminishing city centre population

is well know. Providing people with some land to grow their own food could be a means of attracting people back to the city. There seems to be an increasing interest in where our food comes from and how it’s produced. Many of these projects suggests ways in which food can be produced much closer to where it is consumed, and possibly by the people who will consume it. By publicising our projects we can begin a discussion about the use of land in Limerick City. We can also begin the spread of ideas. While our ideas may not be the most realistic they can serve as a catalyst for change, if only a change i mindset at first.

Proposed Contents An introduction to the theme of “productive Land” Some text and images explaining what we understood the theme to mean. Some of the information presented to us, like the history of the use of land in cities for food production could be presented here.

An outline of the relevance of the theme to Limerick City An inclusion of drawings showing the green areas in the city, and the amount of land that can be “infilled”. A written explanation of the opportunities that this land provides for the city.

A discription of the two sites

An outline of the general sub themes our projects can be divided into Here themes such as growing crops, allotment gardens, sustainable energy, community amenities etc. would be identified. A brief explaination of the general ideas involved would be given.

The locations of the sites would be identified on a map and described. The general conditions of the sites would be outlined.

A presentation of the information, both general and specific to Limerick, found that related to these sub themes Other information gained in the design of these proposals, such as information about growing certain foods or the amount of energy a houses uses could be included in this section.

A summary of our projects A summary of our research This would contain all of the research we collected with a section for each site. For each, in the form of both text and images, information would be provided under the headings of history and connectivity, soil, water, climate, built scale and landscape character and cultural and urban opportunities. Also the information gained from talking to local people or our own knowledge of the areas would be documented here.

Each project would be outlined, giving the main presentation space to drawing and models rather than text. The projects would be presented under the sub-themes identified earlier, with a focus on the particularities of the execution of the theme in each project.

A conclusion on the possible influences of these ideas

Here the research findings and the ideas contained in the proposals would be discussed and suggestions would be made as to how these ideas might encourage change in the city of Limerick and the lives of the people who live and work there.

Economic Proposal I would see the booklet being available for a small charge (to cover some of the cost of printing) in book shops and public buildings around the city.

I chose landscape format (22.86cm x 17.78 cm because it’s a managable size and would be better suited to presenting drawings than a portrait layout. I choose a coil bind so that the book can easily be opened out flat. I chose full colour printing so drawings , photos etc can be presented in to their best. I imagine the publication having between 50 and 60 pages. The cost of producing one booklet would be about 12 Euro.
