Park Lock also known as Troy’s Lock was built in the 1920s by the Shannon Navigation. It was first occupied by John Madden who was the Grandfather of Mayor Paddy Madden.
Around 1930 it became a two story house and the Troy family lived there until it was destroyed by fire in 1977.
Up until 1950s barges travelled up the canal from Lock Quay to Dublin. On the outward trip the first Lock they encountered was Troy’s Lock. The Shannon Scheme was introduced in 1927and the level of water dropped considerably; the barges stopped using the canal. The only trafic coming through was pleasure craft and fishing boats who opened and closed the gates as they pleased. I also made a few bob turning the sluce key. Troy’s Lock was a landmark through the decades for day trippers to plassey on warm summer days. It was a bleak old place in winter with some saying the house was haunted ( I am sure it was).
That maybe justifed as legend has it that, before the canal was cut, a nun’s graveyard was in this vicinity.
In the 50 a watchmans hut was near the bridge while they built a wall to the Dublin Rd at 11pm it was full of patrons from the A1 Bar keeping warm by the fire. The watchman got one and a penny an hour I remember. Mike Madden was a well known local who lived in the canal. In the summer months he took his boat up the canal returning with driftwood filling up his shed with firewood for winter.
1963 and we all walked on water with the big freeze. Boats that passed our lock in the 50s: St James, St Bridgid and
St Patrick. Jimmy McMahon from Lock Quay was an early resident Lockeeper
His son Michael took up the duties when his father retired. Dan Troy (my father) was the superintent for Shannon Navigation from the 1920s right up until 1953. We used use a chat up line inthe 60s that we went to CBU- canal bank uni.
