No. 210

For the first time since 2005, both Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi have confirmed their participation for the $450,000 Chennai Open 2009. The 14th edition of India’s premier ATP tournament will be held at the SDAT Stadium in Nungambakkam from January 5-11. Leander, who has missed the tournament only twice (he missed in 2004 due to injury and in 2007-08, due to prior commitments at Doha) will be partnering Lukas Dlouhy of Czech Republic. The duo had teamed up for the first time after Roland Garros 2008 and has struck a good partnership, winning their first ATP title together at the Thailand Open in Bangkok. Confirming his participation, Paes said: “I am glad to return to the city where I have grown up and to play in front of a crowd that’s always been of great support to me. Lukas and I have had a phenomenal year and we hope to have a great start to the New Year. A fifth Chennai Open title would be a dream start for 2009.” Bhupathi, returning to Chennai after a three-year gap, will be seen in action with his Bahamas partner Mark Knowles. The two had an impressive 2008 season, winning back-to-back titles in Memphis and Dubai and also the ATP Swiss Indoor Championships. The Indian duo has a long standing love affair with the Chennai Open, winning the doubles competition consecutively for three years from 1997-99. They also won in 2002. Ergo Correspondent

Being Barabbas This one-man play shows the life of Barabbas, the criminal who was spared from the cross when the mob was offered the choice of setting Jesus or one of his fellow prisoners free. Adapted from the short novel by Scandinavian Nobel Prize winner Par Lagerkvist, the play attempts to fills in a little hole left open by the Bible; specifically, what happens to Barabbas after the crowd chooses to crucify Jesus and spare his life. The monologue has been designed and enacted by Theatre Nisha founder, director and National School of Drama student, V. Balakrishnan.

t’s the humungous crowd in the small 10x10 feet shop that draws your attention on the busy Bharathi Salai in Triplicane. Amirunisa, the biryani shop, is one of the oldest that exist in Triplicane. Zakir Hussain started this shop in 1990 after trying his hand in textiles. This small eatery specialises in mutton biryani. Served at Rs. 70 per plate, this biryani draws a good number of visitors. Space is a constraint but that doesn’t deter the spirit of the customers. The shop is open throughout the week from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. “Cleanliness and healthy preparation of food is something we swear by. We have a separate kitchen in which we prepare the biryani. We bring in the food from our kitchen and serve it here,” says Hussain. They opt for the traditional way of cooking, on logs instead of LPG. Served with raitha and mutton gravy, it only adds to the Mughalai taste. Roti with Chicken Tandoor and Chicken 65 are sell-outs in the evenings. Hussain’s chefs are from Aambur and they know some of the best secrets behind mouth-watering biryanis. The meat is sourced from a hygienic environment, he explains. They are also into catering services for the film industry, and that’s how they got the name ‘Kollywood Biryani’. Their loyal clientele includes A.R. Rahman, Kushboo and director Seeman. “It’s the unique taste of our biryani that has our customers coming back,” adds Hussain. On a weekday, he sells about 40 kgs of biryani and on a weekend the number scales up to a mammoth 100 kgs. “I find it difficult to sell a plate at Rs. 70 when one kg of mutton costs Rs. 160. But when I see the happiness on my customers’ faces I forget about the cost and feel satisfied. That keeps me going,” concludes Hussain. ■ (Too Good for Critics is a weekly column to celebrate Namma Chennai’s ‘Kaiyendi Bhavans’ and small eateries. Chennai and its median sleepers These people have made the medians their home, preferring them to the common pavements PETLEE PETER [email protected]

an you imagine spending the night on the median with vehicles rushing past you. Sure, many can’t be that daring. But here are some people who spend their nights between life and death. They are the median sleepers. Some of us might have caught a glimpse of these daring denizens during a late-evening drive or stroll. Ergo decided to go after some of them, mostly homeless people who get a good night’s sleep on some medians on city roads. Forty-eight-year-old Alexander, an ice-seller from N.M. Road, is a median sleeper – shockingly, for the past 15 years. The subway in Choolaimedu is where he mostly spends his night. “After a hard day’s work I gulp a few drinks and doze off in my usual place. Sometimes the cops chase me away from there, probably when a VIP is about to pass that way. But most of my nights are spent there,” says Alexander, who has a house in Choolaimedu but

onating one’s organs, either pledged by the deceased himself during his lifetime or by his relatives, has become the latest goodwill gesture many are warming up to. The recent being the case of a small-time social worker based in Chennai. A 43-year-old social worker from Perungudi donated her eyes after she was grievously injured in a fire accident at her home on Friday. Narayani suffered third-degree burns when the kerosene stove acciden-

tally blew up while she was boiling water at her house in MGR Salai, Thiruvalluvar Nagar, Perungadi. She was rushed to the Kilapuk Medical College, but due to lack of proper treatment she was transferred to a hospital in Kanthanchavadi. But, on Monday night she succumbed to her burns and died. Following the advice of the doctors, her two sons, Hari Shankar (25) and Suresh Kannan (23), came forward to donate Narayani’s eyes. Ergo Correspondent

prefers the median. Some medians, like a few on Poonamallee High Road, Aminjikarai, and some in Adyar, are quite popular among the median sleepers. However, some medians have been beautified and barricaded by the Highways Authority, making it difficult for the sleepers, say some. However, medians on Poonamallee High Road and Aminjikarai remain clear of iron barricades, making them comfortable sleeping spots for some. Rag-picker Kondamma (45) is one of the many occupying the 3x4 ft median space opposite Lakshmi Talkies on PH Road,

After a hard day’s work I gulp a few drinks and doze off in the median area. Sometimes the cops chase me away from there, probably when a VIP is about to pass that way.

Aminjikarai. “If you look at it from another angle, it is comparatively safer for a woman as few will want to harass or misbehave with you right in the middle of the road,” she said. On asked about the safety aspect of sleeping in the centre of the road, she pointed out to the accident on New Avadi Road last December, where some construction workers sleeping on the pavement were run over by a Mercedes. “It’s easier for a vehicle to go over a pavement than a median as the latter is more elevated. Accidents could occur on the pavement, but have you ever come across an accident on the median?” she retorted. Interestingly, the beautification and barricading of the medians has also brought in a safety aspect for these median sleepers. “I feel much safer now as the barricading prevents me from rolling over the road in my sleep. The grass is a source of additional comfort,” laughs Thulukanam (64), a rag-picker whose has made the median opposite the NSK Nagar bus-stop his bed. ■

‘‘ OF ANGRY WAVES AND A HOPE When dealing with people, remember you are not dealing with creatures of logic, but creatures of emotion.

Dale Carnegie

Thanks to the post-tsunami relief efforts in this fishing hamlet, Elango is already seeing his dream of becoming an engineer come true

V.HARIPRIYA [email protected]

Dec 26, 2004; 9 a.m. his date will always ring a bell for all those who lost everything to the angry waves. Yet, not even in the least did Kalaimani and his family in this small fishing hamlet in Seruthoor, near Velankanni, think that the tsunami would come as a ray of hope. Thanks to the tsunami, this village will soon get its first engineer.

T

Killer waves Three siblings were heading to a tea shop. Elango, the eldest, was entrusted by their mom to take care of his brother and sister till she returned from the sea – completing her daily chore of buying fish. Their father was resting in

the hut. But, in less than an hour everything was over. People were scurrying for cover from the wall of water. Elango’s mother Elango got entangled in the fishing nets that were placed on the shore for drying and her rib cage was totally shattered. Luckily, others in the family escaped the waves. Hope of a livelihood of many families was dashed and many cursed the sea. But, for Elango the tsunami came in as a blessing. The volunteers of Thozhamai, an NGO which came for an orientation session on child rights in 2005 to the village, offered a help-

ing hand to this young boy, who would have otherwise turned a fisherman like his father. Hearing that Elango had scored 440 in Class X, A. Devaneyan, director of Thozhamai, offered to fund his dreams. In the Plus Two examinations, the boy was again in the spotlight in his village for scoring 1019 marks. Meanwhile, Devaneyan started contacting organisations for a possible sponsorship. Finally, help came from the Community Service Council (CSC) of HCL Technologies. Today, Elango is a student of Electronics and Communication Engineering at DMI Engineering College in Palanchur. The boy is busy preparing for his first semester examinations.

HCL’s gesture According to S. Samson, head

of the CSC, DGM, HR, HCL is sponsoring the education of school-going children in three homes (orphanages). Elango is the first student to do a professional course under the sponsorship of HCL. “We have given the initial amount for Elango’s studies. If he shows progress in the coming semesters we will be paying for his full education,” said Samson. Overcome by the fear of going back to the sea, Elango’s father P. Kalaimani today works as a load man in Koyambedu market. The poor father is already happy that his son is doing Engineering. “Thanks to Thozhamai and HCL, my son is the first boy in our hamlet to do Engineering. I work here for a sum of Rs. 100 per day, and I will be here till my son finishes his course. Our family has pinned all our hopes on Elango.

Elango’s parents: Kalaimani and Sridevi By God’s grace my son will make us proud one day,” says this father, who sometimes skips a meal to save money for his wife and two other children who are still toiling in Seruthoor. ■ (CSR Dossier will be a regular feature in Ergo to showcase the activities of companies that we reach out to. orget the food. Perhaps, this is what fine dining is about. With pretty goldrimmed cups and platinum-coated plates and bowls that glow in the light of chandeliers above, half your evening’s taken care of. Kudos, Vasanja’s newly launched showroom off Ethiraj Salai in Egmore, is for people who take their tableware seriously; for those who wouldn’t like to dip the gourmet spoon into the mocha. Started a few weeks ago, Kudos specialises in porcelain (European, not Chinese), tableware, crystal and silver ware, home linen, home accessories and corporate gifts.

Brand value European brands like Haviland Limoges, Robbe & Berking, D. Portauldt, Moser Crystal, Richard Ginori, Missoni Tableware, David Redman, Deshoulieres and Medard de Noblat find place on shelves here.

Address: Kudos No. 50, Chesney Town House, Near Shivalaya Building, Ethiraj Salai, Egmore, Chennai - 600 008 Ph: 044 – 42148488/ 42148688 Store timings: 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. (Monday to Fridays. Sundays by appointment only)

There are candle stands that range from a tiny white porcelain called ‘Lithosphere,’ to a gigantic Robbe & Berking silver one. Dainty porcelain sets with themes like ‘Black Forest’ sit beside the more elaborate and less minimal. Then there are pieces with interesting graphite and sand-finish surfaces, sushi sets and wine stands. There is, of course, the classic white self-design porcelain. Clear and coloured crystal from David Redman comes in the form of martini and champagne glasses, flutes, cocktail stirrers, et al. Silver ware from Robbe & Berking includes napkin holders, paper cutters and cutlery. The store manager challenges us to find even a single joint in the silver netted bowl-holder basking under the spotlight.

Best in bespoke Kudos specialises in bespoke items, so if you have something specific in mind, just tell them and they’ll get it made and imported for you. Our eyes rest on the ornate red-and-gold cup that Haviland created for Kudos’ managing director, Sandeep J. Golecha. Specific client requirements, be it in terms of crystal ware or silver cutlery or ornamental pieces, will be met. If you want your own, someone’s or your company’s name inscribed on pieces, so be it. A few of Vasanja’s clients include Prego at Taj Coromandel in Chennai and Zodiac Grill at Mumbai’s Taj Mahal Hotel. Corporate orders are also undertaken. The pieces are high-end and exclusive to the point of what can be interpreted as snobbery. But then, everybody loves a little luxury. ■

Iran parliament to impeach minister over fake degree

The UN refugee agency says more than 600 African migrants died or disappeared this year trying to cross the Gulf of Aden from Somalia in smugglers’ boats. A spokeswoman says they were among more than 38,000 people who have attempted the journey from Somalia to the Yemeni coast so far in 2008. Helene Caux said on Tuesday this compares with 29,500 migrants who made the hazardous sea journey in 2007. In that year, 1,400 died.

Iran’s parliament on Tuesday began a process to impeach Interior Minister Ali Kordan for ‘dishonesty’ after he confessed to holding a fake Oxford University degree. The row has caused major embarrassment to the government of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has defended Kordan throughout the controversy and who refused to appear in parliament for the impeachment session. “A person who has to be entrusted with the country’s security has mocked parliament’s trust,” MP Ebrahim Nekunam said in a speech carried live on state radio. “The sensitive position of interior minister requires that Mr Kordan serve in another post. What is important today is the reputation of the Islamic republic system,” added another lawmaker, Ali Asghar Dastgheib.

Washington schools try ‘cash for grades’ scheme

I

t was a bit like pay day for children in 15 middle schools in the US capital who recently received their first checks for good grades, attendance and behaviour. Every two weeks, children aged 12-14 stand to make up to 100 dollars, following a precise sliding scale in which math, science and history-geography grades are as important as attendance and good behaviour in class. “I am going to buy my little cousin something for her birthday because she is turning one,” said sixth grader Kenny Coffin, 11, clutching his check. “I will put a little in my bank account and spend the rest on clothes and shoes,” said seventh

grader Jay Carson, 13. Crammed into a gymnasium, teachers and students at Shaw Middle School, in a working class neighbourhood of the city, listened carefully to what Mayor Adrian Fenty had to say before the first checks in the experimental program were passed out. “Does everybody like to make money?,” he asked rhetorically.

In all, 1,37,813 dollars were distributed to the 15 Washington schools, in the hope grades and behaviour will improve

“Yessssss,” shouted the schoolchildren in glee. In all, 1,37,813 dollars were distributed to the 15 Washington schools participating in the program, in the hope grades and behaviour will improve. In a 2007 study by the National Center for Education Statistics, Washington public schools came last among 11 major US cities in math and reading skills. Half the 2.7 million dollars funding the pilot program for one year comes from city coffers, and the rest from the Education Innovation Laboratory at Harvard University (EdLabs) headed by economist Roland Fryer, who was present at the ceremony. ■ AFP

Recession sends Indian ready-meals, SPICE SALES SOARING

S

ales of spices and Indian ready-meals are soaring in the UK as the worsening economic climate forces curry-lovers to cook their favourite dish at home. As per latest figures, consumers are staying in more rather than heading out to more expensive pubs, clubs and restaurants. Supermarkets have seen sales of curry ingredients such as ginger, coriander and chillies more than double, while Indian ready-meal sales are up 50 per cent. According to Morrisons, sales of spices in the 12 months running up to September have increased dramatically. The sale of curry powder is up 169 per cent, chilli powder 144 per cent, cinnamon sticks 80 per cent, cumin 21 per cent and coriander 13 per cent. Market researchers TNS tracked products bought by a panel of 25,000 shoppers and found that consumers were increasingly flavouring dishes with spices rather than more subtle British and Continental herbs. They found that in the 12 weeks to September, sales of fresh dill were down 1 per

cent, fresh basil down 5 per cent, thyme down 16 per cent and tarragon down 22 per cent. On contrary, sales of fresh coriander and chillies increased by eight per cent. Lime and lemongrass, popular in the preparation of Thai dishes, were also up six and 13 per cent. Edward Garner, director of research at TNS, said that demand for ingredients such as creamed coconut, curry paste and chapattis was eight times higher now than in 1994. Edward Shaw, chairman of Bristol-based herb and spice importer Bart’s, said that he believed that the summer’s poor weather was also to blame for making more people to cook curries at home. “Cooking from scratch is something which people do more when the weather is less good. Throughout the summer there was a lot more cooking than ice-creaming and salad-ing going on,” the Telegraph quoted him, as saying. ■ ANI

Bird not fond of T20 The rate at which Twenty20 is climbing the popularity charts worries former Test umpire Dickie Bird, who fears the shortest version of the game may end up killing county cricket in England. Bird says there might just be “no county cricket in four years’ time” as administrators of the game continues increasing the number of Twenty20 games which have been massive crowd pullers.

Tendulkar or Pietersen will not come cheap for CA’s IPL Cricket Australia may be hoping that the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Kevin Pietersen feature in its IPL-style Twenty20 domestic tournament next summer but some state teams’ officials are not as upbeat as they don’t have enough money to lure the stars. New South Wales Chief Executive of Cricket, David Gilbert said lack of money will make it extremely difficult to lure the exorbitantly high-priced cricketers to Australian shores. “We need someone like a Pietersen or Andrew Flintoff or a Tendulkar. My concern is that are we realistically going to have the funds available to attract those sorts of players? Because they’re not going to come cheap,” Gilbert said. “You presume Pietersen doesn’t get out of bed unless it’s a sizeable amount of money. That’s what we’ve got to get our heads across. We can’t get away from the fact that it’s a domestic competition, so I can’t imagine the funds available will be sizeable to the level I’m talking about, but who knows?” he was quoted as saying by Sydney Morning Herald. Gilbert argued that fielding relatively unknown overseas players will not work.

Bhupathi moves up Barring doubles pro Mahesh Bhupathi, no other Indian managed to gain places in the tennis rankings issued on Tuesday with veteran Leander Paes dropping one spot and Sania Mirza sliding two rungs in the ATP doubles and WTA singles chart, respectively. Bhupathi, who along with Bahamian partner Mark Knowles clinched their third ATP title together this season, winning the Davidoff Swiss Indoors Championship recently, gained one spot to be placed sixth with 3295 rating points. However, the going was tough for his estranged partner Leander Paes, who dropped to 10th with 2900 points. Both Paes and Bhupathi had crashed out in the second-round of the Euro 2,270,000 Paris Masters last week after suffering straight-set defeats along with their respective partners. Meanwhile, out-of-action Sania slipped to 99th spot in the women’s singles chart, although she managed to hang on to the 62nd position in the doubles ranking. PTI

A

ustralia will hope to draw inspiration from their brave batting performance in the last Test when they bid to square the four-match series against India. India lead 1-0 going into the final Test on Thursday after winning the second in Mohali by 320 runs but have been unsettled by the abrupt retirement of captain Anil Kumble. They are also waiting on an appeal against a ban on in-form batsman Gautam Gambhir. Australia’s top-four batsmen scored fifties and Michael Clarke hit a century in a total of 577 in reply to India’s 613 for seven declared before the bowlers gave India a fright by reducing them to 93 for four in the last Test which was drawn. It was a remarkable recovery by Australia whose shortcomings against reverse swing had been exploited during the second Test by Ishant Sharma and Zaheer Khan. Australia captain Ricky Ponting told reporters that the touring side might consider changes in the bowling attack after they took only 12 wickets in Delhi.

It has been tough. There have been a lot of things in the last three or four months that have gone on, but I’m here to play cricket and ready to play. I wouldn’t have come on this tour if I wasn’t ready. Brett Lee

Kumble to open academy A

day after his retirement from the game, former Indian cricket captain Anil Kumble said the plan to start his own cricket academy was very much on his mind and he would start focussing on it. On his immediate plans, he said: “I will take it easy for a couple of days and then go to Nagpur (to watch the fourth test match).” The issue of starting his own cricket academy was on his mind and he would begin focussing on it, he said. Defending his to call it quits, Kumble said: “It is the right time to leave.” Kumble, who returned home after a career spanning 18 years, in an interaction with reporters in Bangalore said: “I have taken the decision rightly to handover the role to Dhoni. I have had a fantas-

tic career and it was the right time to leave. It has not been easy when you play for 18 years. But the time had come to move on.” He said he felt he would not be able to give 100 per cent to the team and hence decided to retire. Commenting on his cricketing career and his contribution to the game, he said: “It has been a great journey. I have done everything I could possibly have done.” Asked whether members of the Indian cricket team have come under pressure following the retirement of two senior players including Saurav Ganguly, he said the team has some good players to carry the momentum forward. “The Indian cricket team is in good hands. The team is all set to be number one in all aspects of the

game.” Talking about the pressure a constant companion for Indian cricketers, the leg-spinner chose to be philosophical. “Players are always under pressure to perform. Each player is picked to perform. It is a team game... Each man has a different role to play and you can’t play the same role at all times. People get confused and expect the same thing from the same person all the time,” Kumble said. Drawing a parallel between Bollywood and cricket, he said: “In Bollywood also, this is the trend. When Amitabh Bachchan started his career, he played a different role and now he plays a different role. But he is still a fantastic performer.” ■ PTI

dia at home this year, sealed their first series victory in India for 35 years in Nagpur in 2004 by winning the third Test by 342 runs. But the world’s top-ranked team are rebuilding after a number of high-profile retirements and are struggling particularly in the bowling department. India, meanwhile, will look to wrap up the series as a fitting farewell to the country’s most successful test captain Saurav Ganguly who is playing in his last Test. Mahendra Singh Dhoni will lead the side. It will also be VVS Laxman’s 100th Test and the stylish middle-order batsman is in form after scoring 200 not out and 59 not out in Delhi.

Bhajji fit to play Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, one short of 300 test wickets, is expected to play after missing the last Test with a toe injury. However, Gambhir’s availability is uncertain after he was charged for elbowing Australian all-rounder Shane Watson during the third Test. The Indian Board has lodged an appeal which will be heard by senior South African judge Albie Sachs by Friday, pending which he can continue to play. ■ Reuters

Seinfeld, Leno and now Minogue

Not the marrying kind

Pop singer Kylie Minogue has her sights set on a career as a comedy actress. The Aussie singer rose to fame in Australian day-time soap opera Neighbours and has returned to her thespian roots several times throughout her career, with a cameo role in 2001’s Moulin Rouge! And on the small screen in a Dr. Who Christmas special last year. She was recently tapped to appear in a new movie by The Edge of Love director John Maybury. And now the singer is planning to go back to acting full time. “I started out as an actress and I thought if I was lucky that would be my career. Then I started singing and I was in that weird space where people say ‘You can’t be a singer, you’re an actress,’” Contactmusic quoted Minogue, as saying. ‘‘I hate that! If you’re creative, there’s no reason you shouldn’t work in different mediums. “It’s so much fun. It’s where I come from so I’m very comfortable to go back to that. It’s not that well known that I’m funny, but I am funny. People who know me will tell you,” she said.

Spanish pop star Enrique Iglesias seems unaffected by his girlfriend Anna Kournikova’s remarks of never marrying him, as he is convinced she will leave him anyway. The Hero singer says that he is cool with the 27-year-old tennis sensation’s remarks, and insists that he is only being realistic about their romance. “Life goes by so fast. My 20s were a blur. I want to enjoy the good moments. They could involve marriage and kids, but not yet. My grandfather had a baby when he was 92. Now there was a man who knew how to live!” Contactmusic quoted the 33-year-old singer as saying. “Anna’s clock may be ticking but I don’t think she’s ready for kids either. We talked about it all one day and she said that she wouldn’t marry me. And she meant it. She said I’m probably just a guy she wants to date for a few years, then she’ll leave me. I’m cool with that.” “Obviously I’m with her because she’s my dream woman. But if she left me tomorrow, what am I going to do? She would have no trouble finding the guy she wants to marry,” he added.

Vaaranam Aayiram on Nov 14 Finally, Gautham Menon’s Vaaranam Aayiram is all set to hit theatres on November 14. The film, which has been in the making since late 2006, has been plagued with one problem after the another. Most notable of them being when its music audio and video leaked when it was still in the production stage. Then one of its actors, Divya, was temporarily banned for not participating in the hunger strike called by Tamil Nadu Film Producers’ Association. Its Diwali release was also delayed. Hope Gautham’s film is a Children’s Day treat to his late father, considering that the film is a tribute to his dad.

MARIAH in Monaco S

inger Mariah Carey is going to have all her diva demands met for the World Music Awards in Monaco. Mirror.co.uk reports that the organisers are planning to spoil her - they are going to spend 10,000 pounds on a private jet that will pick her after her X Factor performance and take her to Monaco for the 20th anniversary celebrations. It will be the first time she will be seen there with her husband Nick Cannon. “It’ll be like a second honeymoon on board for them. There’ll be no expense spared for Mariah. Lilies, mini burgers, sparkling water and bundles of her favourite Hello Kitty toys as a present,” an insider said.

Jo plans a comeback Actress Jyothika, who bid adieu to the film industry after tying the knot with Suriya, might make a comeback if her conditions are met with. The actress has reportedly said that if she gets an offer better than Mozhi she will take it up. And the actress has also added that she is interested in doing negative roles.

Crash! Bang! Boom! Software to prevent car collisions being developed Hema Malini’s day out It was a girls’ day out in Goa as Esha Deol turned a year older. She took to the road on a scootie and taught her mom Hema Malini to ride the two-wheeler too! “I taught her how to ride the scootie. Ahana and me, we both know how to ride a scooter. But mom didn’t,” Esha, who was recently seen in Hijack told IANS. To ring in her birthday Nov 2, Esha invited her mom and sister Ahana to Goa where she is shooting for Shivum Nair’s Exchange Offer. In the mood for fun, Hema let herself go on her daughter’s birthday. “Both my daughters know how to ride the scootie. I didn’t. It was great fun. I’m rediscovering my childhood with my daughters,” said. Esha added: “It was just the three girls, me, Mom and my sister. By some sad coincidence I’m shooting for almost all my birthdays. I shot the whole night on Nov 1. But I did cut a cake on the sets.” IANS

School girl turns to fraud to pay for plastic surgery A 16-year-old Hong Kong school girl unhappy about her appearance forged documents to get a bank loan to pay for plastic surgery, a news report said on Tuesday. Chan Yee-Yee paid an older friend to supply her with payrolls advice slips so she could apply for the 20,000-Hong-Kongdollar loan (2,580 US dollars) and pay for the surgery, a court heard on Monday. Chan, who successfully applied for the loan and has now repaid half of it, was found guilty of fraud and sentenced to 80 hours community service, the South China Morning Post reported. Plastic surgery is a multi-million dollar industry in wealthy, image-conscious Hong Kong where the leading teen idols are squeaky clean Cantopop stars.

A

pedestrian chasing a pet dog suddenly steps in the path of your speeding car 15 metres away. There is no way you can avoid hitting him. The string of cars following you crash behind one another. In future, a new software programme will mitigate or even eliminate such an eventuality. “In dangerous situations, the cars can independently perform coordinated manoeuvres. In this way, they can quickly and safely avoid one another,” explained Thomas Batz, who developed the software with his colleagues at Fraunhofer Institute (Germany) for Information and Data Processing IITB in Karlsruhe and at Karlsruhe University’s chair for interactive real-time systems. Researchers are making use of cognitive automobiles that are autonomously driven for short periods of time. The vehicles are equipped with car-to-car communication and integrated sensors such as cameras, GPS and radar systems, so that they can autonomously recognise their surroundings and avoid any potential obstacles. The vehicles form cooperative groups that can act in unison.

These groups are made up of cars that are travelling in the same direction and are in radio range of one another. Since their speeds and destinations vary, they are constantly regrouped. Sudden dangers, such as a child running onto the road, are recognised not only by the car directly affected but also by the group coordinator. If the car in question can neither brake nor swerve because there is another

car on the lane to the right, the group coordinator steps in. It orders both vehicles to swerve to the right in a coordinated manoeuvre in order to avoid an accident with the child and a collision with one another. Unlike in current driver assistance systems such as the anti-lock braking system (ABS), control of the car is taken over automatically. ■
