Home Economic Classes are no longer an option in many schools, but they should for all high schools. Home Economic Classes teach students how to cook, do laundry, and answer the phone properly. Students need these skills for future use, such as when they go to college and get a job. Home Economic Classes not only prepare students for the future, but also allow the students to help their families at home. Home Economic Classes need to become an option for all students at all high schools. Home Economic Classes teach students many skills, but one of the most important is learning how to cook. Cooking is an important skill to obtain because it’s healthier than eating out, saves money, and one won’t have to depend on other for food. Julia Wolfson, the first author of a School of Public Health, told the University of Michigan, “Cooking one’s own meals can be a key strategy for avoiding obesity, because it gives people control over the ingredients in what they eat.” When eating out, one doesn’t fully understand what is put in their food. When cooking for oneself, people are aware of what they put in their food, and will try to make it healthier. Cooking is a straightforward way to save money. Money is like a friend who is always ready to help. This help is having the money to pay for other needs instead of a Big Mac from McDonalds every night for six dollars. Knowing how to cook prevents one from spending excessive amounts of money on food every day. Depending on others for food is not good for one’s health. For example, if there was a married couple, and the wife only knew how to cook, the husband would be depending on his wife to cook for him every night. But what if the wife went away for a weekend and the husband didn’t have enough money to order an overpriced fresh pizza from Dominoes? The husband wouldn’t be able to eat a delicious meal, all because he didn’t know the basic skills of cooking. Cooking is a skill not everyone has, but should. Cooking is very important in one’s life. Just as cooking is important in one’s life, learning to do laundry is just as important. Doing laundry teaches one responsibility, gives one future experiences, and teaches one to respect their belongings. Doing their own laundry teaches students responsibility. If one doesn’t do their laundry, they will run out of clothes, like underwear. If one runs out of underwear they must wear a dirty pair, and that is not healthy for one’s body. Responsibility steps into doing laundry because one must be responsible and do their laundry so they don’t run out of clothes. Miguel Angel Ruiz said, “Respect is one of the greatest expressions of love.” Respecting one’s own belongings shows the love for their belongings. Throwing one’s clothes on the ground and

leaving them there, dirty, does not show respect, but if one knows how to do laundry, the clothes will end up being washed and put away and ‘loved’ on. When students go off to college, doing laundry is a big part in their life as a college student. If one doesn’t know how to do laundry, they must depend on others doing it for them, or they may feel embarrassed when they don’t have clean clothes to wear. Knowing how to do laundry will prevent students from wearing dirty clothes and will allow them to live as independent people. Learning how to do laundry is very important in one’s life. Knowing how to cook and do laundry are important skills to have, but knowing how to properly answer the phone is one of the most important skills any person can have. Knowing how to properly answer the phone creates first impressions, provides basic customer service, and enhances one’s communication skills. First impressions are a big key in everyone’s life. No one wants a bad first impression, and if one doesn’t know how to speak cleary on the phone, or sounds rude, this may be what they get. To get a good first impression one must speak clearly, slowly, professional, and have a good attitude. This includes using manners and appropriate language. If one were to work at a store, they must have basic customer service, and this starts with answering the phone. For example, if one puts a customer on hold for more than two minutes than that is not good customer service. If one doesn’t use manners of sounds rude, that is not good customer service. Customer service is big in any business, and if one knows how to properly answer the phone, that business will look for that one because they want good customer service. In an article from Wahm, the writer stated, “Speaking can develop one’s communication skills. Those who often speak can master the art of talking. You can even practice proper grammar through telephone conversations.” As the writer said, speaking can improve ones speaking not only on the phone, but also in person. It is important to have good grammar and be able to speak to others in a professional voice, and learning to speak properly on the phone is a great first step. Knowing how to properly answer the phone is great for all people to know because it can get one a job, as well as give others great impressions on one. Home Economic Classes are a big key in some peoples lives. Many students do not learn the skills of cooking, doing laundry, or answering the phone at home. With Home Economic Classes students get the ability to learn these skills so they can use them in their future. As a district, we must fight to get these classes so we are preparing students for the future. We are talking about future presidents here! Do we want someone who doesn’t know how to cook or do their own laundry to be president? Do we want someone who doesn’t know how to answer the phone to be in charge of the United States? Home Economic Classes teach students how to live individually so they don’t have to depend on others for everything. Teachers must prepare students for the future, and they can’t only do that by teaching them Algebra or Biology. They must teach them everyday life as well. Home Economic Classes should be and always will be an important part in high school for many students.
