[email protected] SHS: 610.797.4107 EXT. 2120 Mobile: 484.505.0986 Skype: Rita.Jean.Stangherlin What is English 10 Designed for students who demonstrate a need for additional reading support and reinforcement, this class will supplement the grade level English curriculum with various texts focused on reading strategies and 21st century learning skills including, but not limited to, connecting fiction to nonfiction, evaluating text, literary devices, summarizing, and independent reading choice. A variety of both short and long textbook readings from major academic disciplines will be utilized. Progress will be evaluated quarterly using PSSA-aligned assessments. Prior to registration, reading readiness will be evaluated to determine student placement. How do we learn?

What is the English 10 Approach?

What do we study? •

Academic Literacy Skills o metacognition, schema, talk to the text, think aloud, predict, clarify, infer, summarize, question, make connections (personal, text and world), re-read, visualize, and all the related activities such as looking for context clues, underlining key words in questions and prompts, asking questions about the title , sub-title, text o skill sets are not limited to the above strategies but will build out from them Fiction, Non-Fiction, and Non-Traditional Texts (e.g. maps, charts, graphs)

Always come to class prepared a. Book – covered at all times (otherwise, you receive a 0 for the day) b. Notebook – you may select the type of notebook (you must supply your own paper); we will use Wikispaces when accounts are established but you MUST have your notebook for times when we will not have the computer cart in the classroom c. Homework – you will receive a 0 for incomplete or missing homework Pen – only blue or black ink (otherwise, you receive a 0 for the assignment) d. Pencil – pencils must be sharpened prior to the start of class e. ** FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THE ABOVE WILL RESULT IN A “0.” EACH “0” EQUALS TWO (2) POINTS OFF YOUR FINAL QUARTER AVERAGE. 2. 3. No lavatory or locker passes – emergency considerations recognized (Pass required; you will be interrupting your class for my signature, you will need to sign in/out recording times, so unless an absolute emergency, no lav passes; no locker passes) 4. No food; water in a clear plastic bottle may be brought to class but may not be on a desk when computers are in use. 5. Homework will be given on a regular schedule – Incomplete or missing homework will result in a “0.” Each “0” equals two (2) points off your final quarter average. What is the Absenteeism and Make-Up Policy?
EARLY DISMISSALS, SPORTS EVENTS, or AFTER-SCHOOL JOBS do NOT exempt you from submitting work on time o If you have an early dismissal (athletic, academic, or personal), your work is due on the day assigned o It is your responsibility to give me your assignment for the day o Early dismissal does not give the student an “extra day” to submit work Exception: an early dismissal because of UNEXPECTED illness MAKE-UP POLICY: o You have the same number of days to make up work as the number of days absent days plus 1 If you are absent 3 days, your work is due on the 4th day from your return to school o You may (and should) contact me or the school (or both) for your homework assignments (see page 1 top for contact information) o When you return to school, if information that is not available online is needed for you to complete your work, check the WELCOME BACK folder for your work Most importantly, contact me if you have extenuating circumstances
