Energy Power Resources Limited (EPRL), a company that builds power stations burning unusual fuels, is looking to use up to 65,000 tonne a year in a 17 megawatt tyre-burning power plant near Wolverhampton. About 70 per cent of Britain’s 4,40,000 tonne a year of discarded tyres is currently recycled, but the other 1,30,000 tonne, or around 18 million tyres, are disposed of in landfills -- a practice that is to be made illegal under European Union law by mid-2006 -and they need a new home.
