Endothermic and Exothermic Reactions Materials:      

Thermometers Baking soda 8oz cups Vinegar Measuring cup Cardboard box

Purpose: In this experiment, by mixing the milk and baking soda, it will determine if the reaction is Endothermic or Exothermic. Thermal energy is energy that is transferred by convection, radiation, r conduction. Convection is done by warm particles moving, radiation is done by electromagnetic waves, and conduction is done by direct contact of atoms.

Hypothesis: The absorption and release of energy affects temperature by the temperature being absorbed causes the temperature to decrease, causing it to become cooler, and when then the release of energy occurs the temperature is increased, causing it to become warm.

Procedure Experiment: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Add 1 table spoon of baking soda to cup Take temperature of vinegar Add 2oz of vinegar to cup with baking soda Take the temperature of reaction

Safety Procedures: 1. Adult was watching 2. Put on safety googles 3. Cleaned up right after

Conclusion: Before the adding the vinegar, the temperature was 68.0◦F. After the experiment, the temperature of the baking soda and vinegar mixed was 58.1◦F. The experiment proved that mixing baking soda and vinegar was an Endothermic Reaction. The baking soda had caused the temperature of the vinegar to decrease.

Observation Before Nothing is currently happening

Observation During

Observation After

The vinegar made the baking soda rise and bubble

The bubbles are disappearing and just the vinegar is left
