How your support helps students at Elmhrst Community Prep. Elmhurst Community Prep Middle School (ECP) is a new small school in Oakland, currently in our second year. Serving primarily low-income minority students, ECP recently achieved the greatest improvement in math scores in the entire Oakland school district and made significant gains in reading. ECP’s innovative programs make these positive results possible. Chief among them is our music program, the most extensive in the district. In addition to dance, guitar, and percussion classes, we have a jazz band and a vocal program. 120 students participate in the music programs during and after school. Helena Jack, our music program director, has been featured on the PBS Masters at Work program. Fifteen of our students have received scholarships to attend the Stanford Jazz Camp. The city and the district both have recognized ECP’s program as a model for other schools in Oakland. It is programs like these that keep our students interested in coming to school, learning new things, and preparing them for high school and college. Though we do receive support from the community to maintain our music program (including pro bono time contributed by the musicians who teach in the program), we still need significant private funding each year to maintain the program. Though the jazz band is often invited to perform at events, for example, we don’t have the funds for transportation and accompanying musicians. We also need new instruments and other supplies not funded by the district.

ECP is a member of the Oakland Small Schools Foundation network.
