ELECTRO-CHEMICAL MACHINING

PRESENTED BY

ASAN.SK

INTRODUCTION: Michael Faraday developed this technique. It is an Electrolytic process based on the phenomenon of Electrolysis.

Process Diagram:

WORKING PRINCIPLE:

Operation: 

Mainly consists of Workpiece (Anode) & Tool (Cathode).

A constant p.d 10V applied across them.

Electrolyte is pumped at a rate of 3 to

Contd… 

Cathodic gas & Electrical heat is produced during the process. Rate of metal removed from Anode is Inverse proportion to the Distance between electrodes.

Electrolysis of copper sulphate solution

Chemical Equations:

Cu  Cu+2 + 2eCu+2 + 2e-  Cu

Electrolytic Dissolution of Iron:

Chemical Reactions: Fe  Fe2 + 2eH2O + 2e-  H2 + 2OHFe + 2H2O  Fe(OH)2 + H2 4Fe(OH)2 + 2H2O + O2  4Fe(OH)3

Applications: •

Surface finishing.

Accuracy & Dimensional control

Metal-Shaping.

CONCLUSION Different jobs are done by ECM such as forming Complex Shapes, Drill holes, etc.
